I understand what the individually named crafted shards give, ie fire resistance, illusion resistance, spell resistance etc, but what protection does the shard merely called "Resistance" give?

Will: Resistance bonus to Will Saves
Reflex: Resistance bonus to Reflex Saves
Fortitude: Resistance bonus to Fortitude Saves
Resistance: Resistance bonus to Will, Reflex and Fortitude Saves
Because it's the same type and "group", Resistance won't stack with Will, Reflex or Fortitude saves. It just consolidates them.
However, the following save bonuses do stack with Resistance because they boost different "groups" of effects:
Enchantment Resistance
Illusion Resistance
Spell Saves
Based on the same logic from above (originally explained by a dev post I can't find at the moment), these also stack with each other because they boost different groups.
So if you equip all of the following at level 34...
Resistance +12
Parrying +7
Enchantment Resistance +12
Insightful Enchantment Resistance +5
Illusion Resistance +12
Insightful Illusion Resistance +5
Spell Saves +12
Insightful Spell Saves +5
...you'd have +36 to your saving throws against the Illusory Spikes in Partycrashers
...(+12 resistance +7 parrying +12 illusion +5 insightful illusion = +36)
...you'd have +53 to your saving throws against enchantment and illusion spells
...(+12 resistance +7 parrying +12 school +5 insightful school +12 spells +5 spells = +53)
