Default While we're on the subject of hats...

    ...let's talk about helms.

Frankly, a majority of the lootgen helms look, well, stupid. That helm with the bat wings on it? It makes my toon look like a complete dork.

Seriously, bat wings? Sticking way out? My character looks like some demented reject from a New York fashion show. All I need is a plastic garbage bag for a dress, and really funky-looking makeup and that toon would be able to glide down the runway in a Jacobim Mugatu showing.

Even Derek Zoolander would be embarassed.

Please, give us non-dorky looking helms. Please?

I'd like to use this to restate my idea for a cosmetic paperbag helm for my helves. If not a cosmetic mask then at least give it to us in grenade form like the pumpkin heads.

We used to have guild runs where everyone had to wear that straw lampshade (aka like the Big Trouble in Little China bad guys)!. Some in the guild were always searching for useful versions of those chapeaus. Made for some interesting screen shots and visuals in quests like Tempest Spine.

I still find it funny, in a not really funny at all kind of way, that what our characters wear is still the most odious factor in this game in terms of appealing graphics. Loot Gen armor is bad. Armor kits are slightly better, but in some cases notably worse. Named armor is 95% recycled loot gen - and the unique looks are hit or miss. Most helmets are hideous.

I've been saying since I joined the beta that I wished gear graphics were better... but after playing the game since 05, I've frankly given up hope of seeing it improve.

They do seem dead set on sticking with ugly, impractically designed armor. And it only gets uglier and more poorly designed with each new release of named gear. I think it's to drive sells of the slightly less ugly armor kits, so no, it isnt' going to change.

I like the look of most weapons though - there is a fair bit of variety and the various effects look pretty cool....I still remember seeing my first Holy weapon in the game and thinking it was 'sweet'.

Armor on the other hand ranges from meh to just ok. I do like some of the flashier silver or gold ones but alot of them are just pewter meh.....I think they should look at how the weapon effects were added and 'flair up' the armors in a similar fashion - or even just toned down fire shield type graphics with different flavors depending upon the guard type or other special proc or flavor of the armor.

Of course now I have to say - 'I mean how long could it take - maybe an hour or two - just tweak some pixels and your done......right'.

Helms and goggles - I pretty much turn off anyway as I take time designing my face in the CharGen screens and I want them to be my face to the world not another Minos instead.

Generally speaking I give the Art Department at DDO an easy A for much of the game but you are right Armor needs a shot in the arm.....

I think there are enough 'sparklys' going on without tarting the armor too. Stormreach is supposed to be a real city, not a Mummers' parade.

All I really want is to buy or find armor, and be able to open a book about world armors throughout history, and see the armor I got in the book. I don't care if the armor is colorful, I pretty much just want it to look like actual armor. Not some bondage suit, not some suit that screams "HERE! STAB ME HERE IN MY UNPROTECTED VITALS!!!!", not something I'd wear to a fetish ball, but honest to goodness armor. That should not be too much to ask, but it seems to be so.

Close. I'd aim more for the head*, and start over from scratch.

    *(The armors, not the designers.)

Maybe once that's done, then they can work on a form of Transitions™ armor. Looks like armor in quests, transitions to cosmetic appearance in public...

A: As if we are not always on the topic of hats, really.

B: More shield/helm/etc graphics would be beneficial, as would the long-desired addition of cloak graphics, and finally, cosmetic kits for all [along with the promised soon to be reworked cosmetics system].

Yeah, the armor is pretty ugly. That exaggerating shoulder piece (forget what it is called at the moment) is just...well...dumb. I had a suit of crafted Battle plate on my pally, and it looked WAY beyond cartoonish.

I mean, I kinda long for the uninspired look of just plain old platemail that you see in the museum. Or chainmail tunics of old.

And the thing I find a little odd is that full helms like the crusader helms and sugarloat styles are almost non-existant. Likewise the gaulic, celtic, and even viking styles (contrary to popular belief, most viking helms did NOT have horns on them).

Instead we get these bat-winged monstrosities...

    Default Hats

Yeah, I agree most hats and armors are just plain ugly. But, I'm still waiting for that pointy wizard hat!!! I would love to have one of those!
