    Default (Another) evasion paladin

    Hello all,

Instead of hijacking the other thread I've decided to make this one and post my premature concept of an evasion paladin build. I plan on making this the 2nd life of my current barbarian. It's not something I will be doing very soon, as I've just started a TR life on another toon.

Some background information: I have only leveled two melees to cap, the barbarian and a rogue. All I know about paladins comes from the several forum threads that I've read and although I feel I have a good understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, the finer details of making this build have me a bit puzzled.

My idea behind this build is to have a highly survivable, self-healing melee character, while also taking advantage of some nice leveling gear that I've acquired. Since I have a torc on this character I figured a paladin would be a nice choice, since they actually use their spell points for dps (as opposed to say, a ranger). I want it to be a THF user, since I already have a good stock of two-handers for leveling and at cap and it's also my preferred game-play style.

So here is the updated the build (from post #11):

The feat order is a little bit all over the place due to having to time the monk martial feats. I would probably take PL: barbarian at 3, then swap it out for shield mastery just before taking level 14, so I could take toughness as the 2nd martial feat.

My main questions are around the prestiges and, by extension, the feat choices. I took shield mastery so I could qualify for DoS, which I believe to be the more well rounded prestige. The other option would be KotC, which would free up a feat. However, the fact that it only applies to evil outsiders makes me not like it as much as DoS.

If I go the DoS route, I could take improved shield mastery and either GTHF or bastard sword proficiency.

If you've managed to read this far, I would like to thank you first. Second, I would appreciate any comments and insights you may have.

Don't dismiss HotD completely. The stacking 10% healing amp per tier is quite the boost to pally self-healing. (33.1% for tier 3.) It also doesn't stink to be immune to level drain.

I consider KotC to be almost completely dead, which is sad since I actually named my paladin after it (Ellischalice) with the full intention of staying in that prestige. I simply can't justify any prestige that literally does nothing in entire adventure packs. At least DoS and HotD give you significant bonuses 100% of the time.

With U17, endgame will firmly be established as being eGianthold. KotC would be useful against how many mobs? A couple PoP prisoners, a few jariliths here and there, and those lion-headed dudes? Meh.

Yeah, that's my view too on KotC. Good point regarding HotD.

One thing that I feel is a weak point is that this build has no CC option available to it. No improved sunder, stunning blow or improved trip stinks .

Assuming I would be in Fury, adrenaline knockdown would be the only way to CC.

Decided to play around with the build a bit more. Thought about doing 18/2 Pally/fighter, but decided to stick with monk for evasion. Fighter would only give me Tower shield proficiency and I think I'll only use two-handers. I can always put on heavy armor for more PRR if the situation calls for it.

Level 3 feat is awkward, since the obvious choice would be THF, but that has to be saved for 2nd monk level. I could take Improved Sunder or Maximize, but +5/6 to will saves is pretty nice. Either way, I seem to have all of the essential feats down by lvl 24, so I would end up with an optional feat anyway.

Someone in another thread mentioned a 15/3/2 pally/monk/fighter split. The more I think about this split, the more I like it. Consider the difference between 18/2 pally monk and 15/3/2 pally/monk/fighter for a hunter of the dead -- the preferred prestige for the current endgame raid boss (draco-lich):

    Lose...
...one Level 1 spell; drop from 4 to 3 (Divine Favor, Bless, uh...Lionheart?, no 4th spell worth taking anyway)
...one level 2 spell; drop from 3 to 2 (Resist Energy, uh...Angelskin?, lose I guess Remove Paralysis?)
...the greater restoration sla becomes regular restoration; since immune to level drain, restoration just as good
...three restoration slas per rest; drop from 11 to 8
...the disruption on vorpal effect (using a +++ anyway, though, right?)
...exalted smite IV (this is the only non-prestige enhancement with a level requirement in the 16-18 range)
    ...45 spell points
...18 seconds on divine favor and zeal (36 if extended): from 2:12 to 1:54, or from 4:24 to 3:48 with extend

    No change...
...same healing amp (lose HotD3, but gain monk improved recovery I)
...available paladin enhancements (other than exalted smite IV)

    Gain...
    ...2 feats
    ...Fighter haste boost
    ...Fighter Strength I
...native tower shield proficiency (for swapping to DoS if desired)
...12 ap thanks to not needing hotd3 prereqs (extra turn 3, improved turn 3, unyielding sovereignty)

Ignoring the extra feat we get when the level cap raises to 28, this puts us at 14 total feats:
    7 standard feats (1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18)
    2 epic feats (21, 24)
    1 human feat
    2 monk feats
    2 fighter feats

My initial thoughts regarding those 14 feats, in no particular order:
    1 Toughness (monk)
    2 Power Attack (monk)
    3 Cleave
    4 Great Cleave
    5 Overwhelming Critical
    6 Improved Critical: Slashing
    7 Two Handed Fighting (fighter)
8 Improved Two Handed Fighting (fighter)
    9 Greater Two Handed Fighting
    10 Empower Healing Spell
    11 Extend
    12 Quicken
    13 Force of Personality
14 Magical Training (echoes of power!)

Essentially the two fighter levels gets you extend and echoes of power, haste boost, +1 strength, tower shield, and an extra "free" 7 AP to play with at a cost of essentially nothing.

DoS loses you more dropping down from 18 to 15; HotD just happens to not give much at tier 3 you don't already get from gear anyway. Greater restoration would be nice if tier 2 didn't already make you immune to level drain.

Ignoring all that, I'm curious as to your level timing. My initial thought would be to take the two monk levels first, right off the bat, with the monk bonus feats going toward power attack (@1) and toughness (@2.) Why wait until level 8 to take the second monk level?

I'm a big fan of taking force of personality at level 3 if you're going to take it at all. That's perfect timing to help against hold-happy kobolds and hobgoblins.

Basically so I can get to HotD asap.

Someone in another thread mentioned a 15/3/2 pally/monk/fighter split. The more I think about this split, the more I like it. Consider the difference between 18/2 pally monk and 15/3/2 pally/monk/fighter for a hunter of the dead
Funny you should mention that as I've definitely considered that build too. The loss of HotD 3 in particular is not really a big deal as I'm not even sure it's worth pursuing on an 18/2 split. It's just really expensive.

My main thing with that divine phoenix build is that it plays like a monk. Now, I haven't played either a monk or a paladin to cap, so I don't think it's a good idea to try both at the same time

Plus, the character that I'm TRing has a lot of gear suitable for a THF spec (SoS, Cloudburst, marilith chain, cleaver, cormyrian red plate, etc) and I'm looking to play him in that way.

You did raise an interesting point, that if I'm not set on HotD 3, then I can splash further classes. Could do something like 16/2/2 or 17/2/1 Pally/monk/fighter. I wouldn't want to splash any further than 5 levels, since I would start losing core paladin abilities and spells. Nice reminder with the magical training feat, I had forgotten about that one.

    The possibilities are endless!

Yep, right now the core pally needs 15 levels. Any less and you lose a level 4 spell, which hurts too much.

It occurs to me that we (players in general) should be careful about creating <18 level builds right now in particular due to the enhancement pass. It should hit lama in a month or two, and it could turn out that the level 18 prestige is all of a sudden awesome.

Not specifically about paladins, but in general. (The juggernaut build could conceivably take a hit missing out on the 18 prestige, for example.) Then again, maybe prestiges will work differently and tier 3 won't require 18 levels. So much we don't know.

Just play as a monk until you have great cleave.

Another update with my current plan. I'm having much fun going back and forth on this build . Hopefully I will have made up my mind by the time I cap my sorc.

I'm really happy with this breakdown though. Feat selection is restricted by monk feats. Feats at levels 6, 12 and 15 are interchangeable. Last feat is a placeholder. The others are pretty set in stone.

Any advice from experienced paladiners on which would benefit me most at lvl 6? I'm leaning towards extend, but Great Cleave may be too good to wait until 15? It's been such a long time since I leveled a melee.

Great Cleave @ 6, no question.

From a mana perspective, extend adds nothing to divine favor since the base spell cost is 10. It's huge for zeal, and greatly enhances quality of life, so pushing it back even to 18 is fine. I wouldn't normally take extend before 15 on a pally.

I really, really like Magical Training early on a pally, but it's not super useful at 3. You don't get spells until pally 4, and you don't get divine sacrifice (unlimited with echoes!) until pally 5, so Magical Training can wait until 6. You don't qualify for Great Cleave @ 3, though, so here's what I'd do:

    3: Force of Personality
6: Pay Fred (don't use the free one here!) to change FoP to Magical Training
    6: Great Cleave

A note on free feat exchanges: Once you do the Hall of the Mark, your next feat exchange is the free one whether you want to pay or not. So never do the hall until you're actually on your way to Fred to use the freebie.

This is also nice because the level 3-5 range is where hold can be most annoying.

EDIT: Maximize isn't needed. I'm thinking you're wanting that for a separate "Oh s%$#&^!" button version of cure serious? That's covered by LoH. As crazy as it sounds, Sap may be worth considering at 24. No-save crowd control is awesome for epic elite. Alternately, if your will saves are low you could bring back FoP.

Cool, thanks a lot Ellis. That's what I figured.

And yeah, Feat changes are really cheap before 17, so I always pay for those.

Knowing myself, I will probably be ready to TR just as the enhancement changes are about to hit :P
