Because it's broken?
What if Marut broke in VoN3 and never spawned. You'd want it taken down until it was fixed right? You wouldn't leave it up because 90% of the content is still ok, and you can get SOME exp from optionals...
The system is broken. People have accidentally erased slots on epic items through no fault of their own. It WILL happen again, although the notice on the launcher is helpful. It is not fair, it is not helpful, it is not professional, and it is not in our best interest to leave it as is.
the point is, people will get burned if you don't prevent it. It's turbines job to prevent it.

The Reality- Those kobolds in Water Works won’t have a chance but nothing else cares-Learn to play your build and all its abilities in actual difficult content, get gear and reaper points in level 30+ content and raids.
I'd rather Turbine take the whole thing down and say, "we're sorry for the inconvenience but the epic alter in its current state is broken. For your sake, we've taken it down momentarily. Rest assured we are working on a fix and anticipate Update 17 to carry that fix to the live servers."
Sure sounds better than, "we know the alter is broken and people have accidentally lost a lot of epic tokens worth of augment slots. We thought it would be ok to leave it as is so you can discover this issue for yourself."
I want a company to have my back. Take it down so no one else gets this frustration.
I'd assume when Update 17 comes out epic tokens will be removed from the game anyway and the update will introduce augmentations that can only be bought using astral shards.
So instead of whining we should instead be happy that the altar still works for some items and we can use the epic tokens at least for some of them.

Seriously, this is a big fat downer of a bug, made worse by the low priority of having to wait until U17.
I'm in the process of farming up gear on two alts that once I finally pull, I need to change my gear around, including augments on the bugged gear.
So now, let's say after another month of farming I finally get those items. I should just chill out for another month, hoping that U17 makes it all better? Not cool. Kind of takes the wind out of my sails, hurting my motivation to try and keep farming my gear upgrades in the first place.
I'm not going to stop playing, of course. But this definitely falls into the "makes me want to play less" category of bugs.
I don't want to play less. I need to find a different way of doing what I want with my gearout, till the augment system returns... and that's fine.
And I'm not on the bandwagon of ragging on turbine. Folks, maybe they USED to not care and totally ignore these types of problems, I don't really know, but that was then and this is now. Nowadays people like Tolero and Cord go out of their way to get us satisfaction. They fixed our missing motu items, they fixed our cakes, they fixed our pets. We now get 'lost and found' bank-eaten ing bags mailed to us. The list goes on. Yeah, ingame GMs have a LONG way to go, but I'm betting that Turbine will help us out and find a way to refund us for our wasted crystals. May take a bit to sort out, but I'm confident that they're going to do the right thing.

If it wasn't Turbine, I would say this is unbelievable. Every long time player basically just got shafted. Anyone who was wearing any old system epic loot just got told 'sorry, we don't really care about those items anymore, buy MotU if you want to continue enjoying DDO'.
You wait and see, future updates will bring fresh bugs to light as each update does now, but Turbine will start to withdraw any support due to the fact that old items have little relevance to the current cycle income stream. Sad thing is most players who cared have left the game and their won't even be anyone around to catalogue these bugs as they mount up.
Well, since epic items still work as advertised, except for those from two packs (one of which is free) and a free festival... no, "long time players" didn't get shafted. Every item still works exactly as it did before the hotfix... the only difference being you can't update items from three specific areas. And you can still craft the epic items from at least two, and i suspect all three, you simply can't add slots.
I, specifically, didn't get shafted. I'm wearing Bucc rings on most of my characters. I'm wearing Brawling gloves on even more. I'm wearing both on one. Why didn't I get shafted? Because, even as a casual player, any gear layouts I had that required those slots were already done (although to be fair... my current gear layouts don't require slots). Because any plans for the future that may require slots (my mechanicarty's Master Artificer ring, for instance) I can live without for the time being. Hey, I got by without it for this long, I can wait. We were not told "we don't care". We were told "Well, the fix to *this* broke *that*, but *that* will get fixed as well in the very near future, at a specific date which we're at least internally aiming for even if we don't want to tell you guys the target so we can maybe let it slip a week if something crops up..."
Out of all the people I know... only one can't update his gear layout (I don't count my mechanicarty since I'd need to do a lot of work I'm not sure I really want to do anyway). But he didn't get shafted, because his current gear works just fine; he simply can't make it a smidge better.
What, exactly, have they "withdrawn support" for? If they were "withdrawing support" for this stuff... they wouldn't have bothered fixing the "slotting a +7 augment and then clearing it breaks the weapon" bug. They wouldn't have added L24 Mabar items. I guarantee there's L24 Cove items. They're releasing epic GH. They're revamping the epic augment system entirely. This is hardly "withdrawing support." This is hardly "We don't care about these items anymore." This is hardly "buy MotU if you want to continue enjoying DDO."You wait and see, future updates will bring fresh bugs to light as each update does now, but Turbine will start to withdraw any support due to the fact that old items have little relevance to the current cycle income stream. Alright, I just got bit by this bug. Was trying to add exceptional +1 CON to a Cloak of Flames and it erased my blue slot (Greater Arcane Dexterity). So with mithril plating, I'm supposed to live with 15% ASF until February when u17 is projected to go live?
And how about the 30 dungeon tokens that bonehead move of mine just cost me?
Filed a ticket but nothing so far and don't expect anything either. Filed regardless.
Well, I was the one who found this bug. My Epic Cavalier Plate is now 6 AC lower than it used to be. I can get the 6 AC back but it would cost me the +6 Charisma that I placed on it...and I need more epic tokens to add it again. It is going to cost me 40 epic tokens to get his fixed. That is a decent amount of running epics in Ebberon...when I spend most of my time right now in Evening Star.
