    Default Crucible Problem

Just wondering if any folks can settle my mind on something thats been bugging me for a week or so.

My group and I running Crucible encounter the "Test of Intuition" I think it was called where you get 3 clues to where the horn is hidden and 6 doors to pick.

The clues talk about death being behind certain doors and I dutifully cross out those mentioned leaving 1 door, I go to said door and open it to be hit by traps. (Fortunately Im a rogue so survive) Figure Ive made a mistake so we all do it settle on the same number open that door and traps again.

Finally I get fed up and open 1 door until the horn is behind it but are the clues borked?

There is a trick to this part. Spoiler below.

Spoiler: Have someone with a very low wisdom read the book. Look for white text that says "You sense death lies behind door #Foo". Then go open door #Foo.
You may know me as: Gannot, Gonnet, Gunnet, Ginnet, Gaxxat, Gennot, Gannut, Gxnnxt, Horseface, Izzayhay, Pailmaster, Artifactual, Gynnet and/or Barred. What? I like alts.

Horn changes locations each time. The clues depend on your wisdom: High wisdom and it tells you the truth, low wisdom and it lies. Best way is to get someone with 8 wis and do the opposite of what it says, e.g. "Death hides behind door XXXX" means that's where the horn is.

no, that just means you have poor Intuition....

    Intuition is Wisdom based.

If you have a Poor Wisdom and a Poor Intuition, maybe the Very first warning you sense is incorrect?

There are a number of ways to handle that situation...

    1) Pick a door and keep opening it until you get the horn (usually with an evasion character like your rogue)

    2) Take the least WIS character in the group and have them read the book and do the opposite of what it suggests....often works well.

    3) Have someone clever read the book/hints and puzzle out the clues, based on the info on each door.

Most groups end up doing option 1 above, since it involves no thought and perhaps just a bit of healing to accomplish, while options 2 and 3 involve some actual thinking and trying to deduce the solution.

    To be even more clear:

    - a High Wisdom means you have a good CHANCE (repeat: chance) to be told the truth for each of the 3 clues. You might be told all 3 truthfully, or 1 might be a lie, or 2 might be a lie.
    - a Low Wisdom means you have a good CHANCE (repeat: chance) to be told a lie for each of the 3 clues. You might be told a lie all 3 times, or 1 might be true, or even 2 might be true.

Max Wis route: get all 3 clues, figure out the puzzle, open the door indicated.
Low Wis route: get 1 and ONLY 1 clue (first clue), then STOP reading the book, and go to THAT door, the door they said in clue #1.
Medium Wis route: you are hosed, just pick a door at random with an evasion character till the horn is there.

If you time it right .. you can jump out of the way and avoid most if not all of the traps (although to be honest I can't remember exactly if I managed to avoid them all or got snagged by 1).

Default heres what is the usual

LOW WISDOM AND DON'T GO BY WHAT THE BOOK ITSELF SAYS!!!

you take lowest wisdom person to go read the book while everyone else stands back by the stairs. you ignore what the book says. a white dialog will flash on the screen. it usually says something like death hides behind the 1st-6th door or something similar to that. if your wisdom is low enough it is trying trick you into not opening that door. that is the one you want to open. a wisdom of 8 will work this way and maybe a 10.
for those that dont know what door is what, if you look on the ground below the door there is a roman numeral I through VI for the number of the door

I ran this quest twice over the weekend.

The first time, I read the book because I had the lowest wisdom on my sorc.

Book said I sense that death lies behind door X...

The ranger went to that door, opened it and got the horn no problem.

The next night, virtually the same group.....

I read the book, he opened the door, trap sprunge. We reset it, I read it again, different door, he opened it, got the horn.

I really think it depends on the book's mood.

Try drinking a Silver Flame pot and then reading the book.

The above is easily explained. With a 6 wisdom, there seems to be 100% chance that the first clue is the door with the horn (I have never seen a 6 wis character pick the wrong door when they know what they are doing). With 8 wis, it seems to be a 5% chance that the first clue is wrong, and seems to go up 5% per 2 wisdom points. This is all just from experience and over 200 crucible runs, rather than hard data

In the first week Cruicible was released my group must have spent 20 minutes at that door trying to figure it out. Finally I went back and read the clue at the start of the hallway again and it all clicked. Brilliant design really. My max wis cleric got it on the first try once we had everyone else stand back and let her do her thing. On the next run we tried a 8 WIS char and they got it first try as well.

Cruicible still wins for the longest first time quest I've ever done. It was easily 3 hours (naw, probably much more lol) but a blast to figure out.

    Many useful comments Worth knowing!
Any idea how high the wisdom needs to be? Seems most folks go with the the low Wis route! Bizarre system and what a devilish book!

Yeah, it's still in my top 5 (I like PoP a lot as well) of best designed quests in the game. Lot's of fun.
