I stop using it for zero fort targets at level 12 when I can pull out GS, if I had a SoS i'd swap it out at level 10 for that.

Being that this is in the Spell Casters thread, I'm assuming he's meaning, "When do you stop using Master's Touch and start flinging spells around"

I find level 6-8 to be about where you start getting better DPS from spells, though I guess it depends on the caster.

Personally though, I've never bothered with Master's Touch on casters. I guess I'm just old school. If I roll a caster, I play a caster.

    For melee:

Antique Greataxe => for undead (at level 4)
    When I have SoS => level 10
When I don't => have to agree with other poster... around the time GS becomes available...

Will have to run some numbers and decide if I can craft a general purpose higher dps with decent min level... to replace it around 7

But carnifex when crits are possible is hard to beat at low level

    For wizards: level 5-6 +/-

    For sorcs: Level 4 (scorch!!)

I usually put mine in the bank when I get Improved Critical.

Holy for undead, and use whatever DR breakers you need for low levels (usually blunt adamantine for the earth elementals).

Greensteel, banishers, smiters, disruptors, and paralyzers make regular weapons obselete in the 10-14 range anyway (with exceptions of course).

I do remember dual wielding the delera clubs back in the day. Probably on a permadeath character. Those skeletons used to require a good dr breaker.

I stop using it at about lvl 6-8, and instead usually go with fireball and wall of fire. However, I still have it ready if I get low on SP until lvl 10-12 when other weapons are better to have as backup; GS, smiters etc.

For sorcs I put it away around level 6.

For my wizard, I kept it around much longer - I had trouble learning sp conservation after playing 4 sorcs up. Oh, well.

I tend to stop using my Carni once I get Firewall. I'll still keep it handy though "just in case"

I never start using it on arcanes. Scorch and burning hands and acid spray are by far more dps than carnifex against multiple mobs and cost next to nothing unmetaed.

Once you have fireball or acid blast swinging a weapon is pretty pointless in most cases. Once you get acid rain/firewall even moreso.

Divines-maybe a fair amount, but proficiency is an issue there and with low/moderate strength a holy of bleeding 2hander is more damage/swing by a LARGE amount.

Melees-depending on build, probably till greensteel or SOS. The higher damage mod leverages the good crit range more, making it better than crafted potentially.

Oh so it is, my bad. In that case I'd say when I get fireball for arcanes and blade barrier for divines(I usually take a melee level or more on divine TRs).

the original question was intentionally broad, to invite conversation much like it has.
seems the general consensus is put it away once you get a decent AoE

i am currently swinging it on a barb splashed FvS, looks like it's going back in the bank once i get the GS out.
in the meantime ill give the holy/bleed and holy/PG a go.
not like it's gonna break anything to try.

Once you get holy smite (lvl 8/9) that will be enough to not bother swinging if you are a seasoned zerger and group mobs up well, have high sp due to gear/PLs/ioun stone etc.

If more of a flower sniffer the AOE becomes less powerful and melee is more necessary.

I never used it on my casters. Acid spray and burning hands spam at low level works well.
Then after acid blast, there is no reason to look back. Non metaed acid blast+fireball spam ftw!

On my melees also never used it. Since mobs often die from 1-2 hit, there isnt much reason to crit.
Today, we can have lvl2 slicing bleed weapons. They are far better then Carnifex.
A lvl6, holy slicing bleed weapon have almost as good dps as a SOS! Just 4 level sooner, and may can have icy burst aplied to it.

    I use it never

Namely because, well, I don't have the quest pack it drops from (I'm frugal, so sue me)

For another, I want my arcane spell casters to cast spells, not swing bloody greataxes around.

If I'm swinging a weapon around as either, it's going to be either a quarterstaff or a heavy mace (if I'm a sorc and don't have a Thaumaturgy staff yet, which I usually end up getting pretty quickly)

I tend to use it a lot on my Arcane until level 7 (when I get firewall/Icestorm) and still keep in my bags until 11 (GS con op, Torc) just in case I run out of SP for some reason.

Carnifex is hard to beat up until Greensteel when crits are possible. Until you get Greensteel, only Sword of Shadows surpasses Carnifex (Roughly lvl 16 unless you are a TR).

My last couple of wizard lives I just used spells the whole way through and it surprisingly worked just fine.

I did run most things invis to end boss kill recall though.

    On a melee THF Fvs:

I've used Maelstrom for most things until level 8. Or, an acid/pg/icy burst falchion. Maul of Vengence for that golem in Tear.

At level 8 I have a few things for different mobs. Xuum for most (nice base damage), Crafted Holy of Undead bane Maul and Falchion. Phase Hammer for ghosties. Garzuul's Bane for appropriate mobs.

Level 12 pretty much a Lit2 Falchion, or Skiver and a Shield.
