As others have stated too, timezones are quite irregular in their use and longevity, so UTC is not a bad way to go

UTC (GMT basically) is much easier to learn than timezones in an international context. In a national context for countries with multiple different ones, timezones are simpler. So for the OP it depends on who the players are likely playing with. As Smrti said, he plays a lot with us in the east asian/oceania timezones, so we use UTC to put up times for stuff, as it is easier. Players who mostly play with fellow North Americans are likely to just use timezones, as they are all that is needed. I don't use UTC when I think about the other timezones in Australia, but I can easily work out other countries times using it.
You guys do still like to put raid days up and forget that I'm a full day behind you more or less.... Sunday night can be late Saturday/early morning Sunday.... :/

Yea, "Abbot with LD on Sunday" is of no help to me either lol.

Most raids I see posted here list the timezone too (I know Shade does). I still have headaches working it out though.

Well, Turbine is in EST (EDT) and so are their servers, so you can forgive people just using that as a standard.

In the military, it was always Zulu time which I got used to - aka GMT, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

    Let me get this straight:
Right now, they just post their time (and zone) then you just convert to yours.

Now, you want them to convert to another zone (GMT) and then you have to convert back to yours?

I think it is easier to just ask everyone to post their offset with the time (which they should know) and whomever is interested should just do the math... Or is this from the same crowd who can't figure out what a D6 meant and have to know it is 1-6.
Oh, that's easy. I didn't farm them. I just cheated. -Meghan

I think I made the assumption that most people know their local time zone in UTC (GMT) - apparently not the case.

My local time zone is AWST, however if anyone asked me from DDO I would give the UTC zone as its designed to be universal - UTC +8.

That puts you at ~13 hours ahead of Turbine's HQ.

Well asking all Americans to use GMT is like asking them all to use the metric system. In other words, ain't happening! I can't even get my non-military friends to figure out how to convert to military time.

Having played with many Aussies in other games I have nothing against ya'll. Just pointing out our typical hard-headness.

Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
    Seeking the bubble reputation,
    Even in the dragon's mouth.

I do like the metric system .. 'debate'. Two of my favourite links:

ON TOPIC: I guess it's unreasonable to request UTC (GMT) times for the masses. I shall keep that in mind..

Considering my guildies and more than a couple Canadian friendships, I had to learn metrics a bit better than before.

Although, telling someone its 100F sounds better than 38C....>.>

    *peeks in*

*realizes that he is too much of an idiot to tell time despite having lived in several different countries around the globe*

*is thankful that his computer is set properly to his own local time and that he has internet access to do quick, painless time conversions if necessary*

*goes back to drinking his morning coffee whilst ruminating on the destruction he is going to cause Khyber later tonight*

*chokes a bit on coffee when he realizes he'll likely cause no destruction and that his soulstone will be carted to and fro by giggling guildies*

Hawaii and Alaska are 'special' places outside the general gist of things Stateside though.

therefore, they'd better know their Timezone inherently.

Exactly. Because asking him to learn EST/PST is the same as him asking us to learn AWST/AEST.

Instead, he's asking us all to use the same universally recognized notation for time zones in order to make things easier on everyone. Which doesn't strike me as unreasonable in the least.

I would also like to point out that Greenwich, England is currently on GMT +1. :P

The failboat a lot of people sail in is equating GMT with the time in Britain, which is only true about half the year.

I don't articulate myself as well as I should, but at least some people are getting my point. End of the day it's doubtful much is going to change, but I don't feel so bad for my mini rant now :P

    Edit: Grammar.
