@op I just ordered my Alienware Aurora just because my harddisk is on its way out and my monitor blew up, I hear you time to upgrade! Don't tell my girlfriend it was £2500 though.

You followed very closely to my same thought path. I looked into the 1155 chipset and the I5-2500k. The nerd side of me said hell yes, what's another 100$? (Pricier mobo and proc)

The practical side said save yourself the extra 100 bones, the I5-760 will do everything you need and more for quite some time. The I5-760 can also clock just over 4ghz stable on air (though I will probably only take it up to 3.6)

Unfortunately the practical side won. I just couldn't justify it.

For the others - not going with anything too crazy. I'm upgrading from a Core 2 duo, so I have to replace mobo/proc/memory.

I5-760 (Amazing OC chip - Lynnfield quad core)
    8GB Gskill DDR3
    Asus P7P55D-E
New power supply (Antec 650W) and cooling for the proc.

This game is really the only one I ever run, so I can get away with saving a few bucks
Well, don't get too excited. This game has issues (running all on one thread in one core). What OS are you using?
Oh, that's easy. I didn't farm them. I just cheated. -Meghan

I'd look into it, but unfortunately, looks like it's infected with the Securom virus. I'm boycotting every publisher and developer that installs viruses on people's computers like that. This is what makes it hard to find games at times, though good can be debatable (after reading reviews, 99% of the ones I won't buy weren't worth buying in the first place).
Grab the steam version then, or the DVD and get a no-DVD crack.

Or just give up, and install Deus Ex for the millionth play-through.

But then I wouldn't have time to play Baldur's Gate for the millionth play-through. :P

Default SSD = DDO without lag.

I couldn't agree with you more!! Ive spent the last year building 3 different high end PCs trying to get better performance in DDO. Quad core AMD, Hex core AMD and now an I7. Was using a SATA3 Raid0 in all of them and had the same lag no matter what. Finally got smart and bought a Patriot Inferno SSD to use. Made a bigger performance difference in game than even crossfiring a couple of 5870s. Would have bought the SATA3 Crucial SSD, but in Raid0 TRIM doesnt work

That is totally incorrect. If DDO is only running on one core of your CPU(assuming you have more than 2 cores) your computer is the problem. DDO is written to support multiple cores, and even written to support multiple cores with Hyper Threading. If you only have a dual core CPU then yes, windows and services are allocated for one thread and DDO would run off the other. DDO is not a CPU intensive game.

To DarkHelmet: Go get yourself an I7 and see. Quad core CPU with H/T has 8 threads. Keep a performance monitor running and go run a few laps in the market. You'll see how many cores/threads are being used. DDO is a beautiful game when you run it wide open. And by wide open I mean 8x AA and Ultra everything.

To MTS: dump the 10 year old technology SATA HD and get a SSD for Windows and games only. Use your 1TB SATA as a slave drive, and install everything except Win7 and games to it. With an ancient HD like that your CPU and Memory can't R/W off the HD pagefile fast enough to keep up with the speed and quality you're trying to get on your display.

I also agree 100% on both counts. SSD is next on my list of upgrades.
