It annoy me more to hear geeky people sounding like muppets on the voice and hi pitched children yelling at the mic. 90% of voice users are like that specially those who require voice to enter. So I agree on you about not joining them.

My last run with voice only chat, the leader wants a full voice chat party and can't hear us.. though I turn off my mic my speakers are on.. the leader was listening to music, to whats the fuss requiring everyone to have voice chat when the leader have his ddo sounds muted.

Most of the time, the geeky ones tells you what to do with your char, tells you how to build it and then die a lot in the quest saying he died because he was focused teaching you.

    ****************

I do join groups that says... "Voice chat is a plus"..
and the funny side on having voice on.. someone screaming on the mic, "resist please" and 3 or more people are speaking.. who the hell needs resist..

Voice is certainly a usefull game mechanic and i'm all for voice in certain crucial situations. I drove over 100 miles the day Microsoft game voice was released, and have wore out 2 playing FPS. However as a long time PNP gamer i play RPG's for the RP aspect and enjoy immersing myself in the escapism. Even at the best of times voice is detrimental to that, being forced to listen to the inane chatter of pre-pubescent children, some poor guys wife screamin' at him, drunken fools drooling on themselves, and of course my absolute favourite.... 99 cent mics being used underwater. Some of the mic noise coming from ppl threatens to blow my speakers and is extremely jarring. These things drive me absolutely insane!!! Quite often i simply disable voice chat entirely, once in awhile when pug'n with responsible, mature adults, i will use my mic when required, but most of the time i listen if i can, and rarely if ever speak, i'd say about 20% of the time i am forced to turn off completely. IMO voice decreases my enjoyment of the game and anyone fool that DEMANDS me using it can KMA

When i play my wife is usually asleep. So while i keep headphones on and can listen to whats happening, i dont turn my mic on. You really do not want to wake up that girl...

Either way, if i need to say something, i do it on party chat.

I always find it much easier to type what buffs are neede on pt chat. Its much easier to see XXX - FoM and Fire than to hear Random Guy #43 saying "FoM and Fire please" Over the mic. At least on chat you know what character still needs it.

Even when the Mic is on, i still type for the buffs i need. Its just easier to associate.

I take this as a sign that people want me to know exactly where the trap starts.

The only reason you would need a mic is if you are giving out verbose instructions to other players. Past that, no one needs a mic.

I will take people without mics in my pugs.. i really don't mind reading their text either. I get really irritated when people give me "no mic and no sound." These people usually get a swift boot from me as I really have little tolerance for people who force their issues onto other people. I use a mic.. when I lead pugs I speak instructions. I will not stop to type instructions because you can't be bothered to have sound.

Aussie is a person that has no need for voice. She seems to be able to type and play as fast as I can talk and play. I'm always amazed at how fast she can type a response from a voice question and continue to heal/fight or whatever her roll is.

I know I'm too ******** to not be able to use voice. But there are people like Aussie on here that do just fine w/o it.

All to often lately I join/create a group only to have the players ignore chat, even if it's turned on. Later, when I figure out they're ignoring, I ask via type if they can hear chat and they respond that they're listening to music instead.
This annoys me to no end.

God forbid someone listens to music (something alot of people enjoy) while playing a video game...

Oh don't get me wrong. I listen to music while I play too but there is a time to listen to music and time to listen to the game. I would never allow my desire to listen to music become someone elses burden by not hearing them when trying to lead.

If you want to listen to music, you'd better know your role, or go solo, lol. I ran GOP today with a group, other caster in the group had no sound and I don't feel I should be forced to type while killing everything. Cluster**** ensues, entire party dies except me, I have to solo kill both brothers, then raise everyone on my caster because the cleric had no mana or res scrolls, lol. Was a good time, but could have been much easier.

    Yeah.

Also, god forbid people use methods other than keyboards or mics to communicate with others when playing the game. They should be able to use their mouse/keyboard to click every letter. Screw being a team.

If the leader is giving instructions that you can't hear, then you don't know what he wants you to do.
See Boldrin's post above for what happens when you can't hear instructions.

Bottom line, if you don't have a darn good reason for having sound off you are probably a detriment to the party.

A group full of people on mic means lots of echo..echo...echo... and gossiping chatter that is annoying. Also, there is all those people who don't use push-to-talk and they cough, snort, sneeze, burp and yell at their spouse / children all the time.

I quit using my mic a couple of years ago except for Vent.

When you type out instructions, it is there to scroll back. Plus, you know who asked for what buff if you are buffing a whole party.

Aussie sounds like she is using a tin can and string with her mic!

One thing I am sure people don't consider is that you may be playing with someone who is hearing impaired. I have been playing games for a long time and I can say it was truly wonderful when I was able to play with other people and I only had to type to communicate. I do have a headset, but that doesn't mean I understand what everyone says. It is embarrassing in real life as it is when people get angry and frustrated because I cannot understand them right away. It's 10 times worse in a game. I can't see people's faces or body expressions to get an idea of what was said. I have a block of tone I don't hear no matter what, those nerves are dead so I have to discern what the words are from the way they sound to me. Not that different from normal hearing folks, really, just means I have to do it slower and often in-game the reaction of the leader (and times other members) can be disheartening. Just hoping to give people another perspective on why someone may not be so hip to voice.

I always have VC on just for listening though.
I often play after wife and kids go to bed so no sound at all. When I do play earlier and have the sound on I find most people hard to understand anyway. It alot easier to read a typed message. It clear and whether sound on or off I won't make an error. I have had many times with sound on where I did something different then what they said as could only make out part of the command. I think it is a fundamental difference between the way some groups play. Mic is more helpful to groups that do really fast runs as they don't have to take a sec to type anything. I actually find I am hating these groups. In such a rush to finish a quest hald the group is way behind and don;t get to do much. Almost no strategy in these groups just a few uber characters runnig ahead and killing everything while others try to actually implement a plan. If we had n omics would be more planning as people have to take a sec to type what they want, allowing time to plan somehting.

Quite the opposite. Most groups will go out of their way for someone running silent with legitimate reasons - as has been mentioend
several times thru the thread. Sleeping family and/or medical reasons are absolutely legit. (Gotta communicate that to the leader tho.)
