This isn't an assault charge or a night with a hooker. This wasn't drugs, or a DUI, or getting caught rubbing one out in a public washroom. Being accused of child molestation is something that sticks with you for the rest of your life, lets not pretend that this didn't have a huge effect on ruining his career.
You fight those charges, because it's about more than money. He wasn't paying hush money to aviod bad press, he already had a ton of it. He wasn't paying hush money to aviod embarassing information being leaked out by the media, there was a ton of it out there. He wasn't paying off to aviod this becoming public and damaging his reputation cause it was already public.
Let's not pretend this is something that it's not. He wasn't being charged with some minor indescretion or something that was simply potentially just embarassing. When accused of something as horrible as molesting children if you are innocent you defend yourself, you don't pay 22 million to make the problem go away. You don't give money to someone who accuses you of being a monster, you want to prove your innocence.
Personally I think that all the adults involved are mental. The parents, the staff that knew something was wrong but never said anything, friends of MJ who quite frankly should have had an intervention, and of course MJ himself.
If people want to believe he is innocent for the simple reason he was a great artist, fine. I think he's guilty because a grown man does not feed children "Jesus juice" and have pants off time in their bed without being a child molester.
