Help design the new DDO Wiki logo!

My two cents, take it for what it's worth (aka - not much)...

I received those two awesome submissions a few days ago and totally forgot to post them here.

So, here they are:


Both are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works license and attribution goes to Ricardo Ortiz Morales.

Simple and elegant. If you use it, I would increase the size of the lettering and make it darker so it's easier to read.

Here is one that is the same sizeas wiki-globe.

The polish on this one is great. It may suffer a bit from the same problem I have with my DDOcast logo: especially on smaller screens it's hard to read. Minor, I might be sending you a PM someday in the future to help me re-design the DDOcast logo, although I'm gonna try to do it myself first.

Sorry, but it's too hard to read and I'm not a big fan of the warping. Still, nice effort!

The wife is gonna kill me when she finds out someone hacked my family photos folder and stole a picture of her mother....

It's awesome but there is one or two problems with it. That's a shame because I really like it.

The problems I see with it are:

• Use of the Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach logo, which is a property of Turbine. I have checked with Tolero (I tried something similar and I have been confirmed I can't use it) and that's a big no. Maybe if we alter it a little, it would be alright but as it stands that is too close of the original logo and thus incorrectly suggest that the DDOwiki is endorsed by Turbine.
• Use of the Wikipedia logo, which may or may not be under Creative Common-No Derivative Works. I will have to check with Wikipedia on that detail. If that is legal within the constraints of the license, that logo would be awesome. Though, the Uncyclopedia logo suggest that Wikipedia won't mind that one. I'll com back to you on that one.

A more minor point is that we are DDOwiki and not DDO Wikipedia.

Other than that, I really like your logo.

The wiki is a non-profit public website and the logo is not used for profit. Seems strange you can't use it. In any case I like the beholder idea. I'd suggest putting 1d20 numbers on the different puzzle peices.

As far as the wiki logo is concerned he has changed it enough that it shouldn't be an issue. They haven't copyrighted or licensed round puzzles.....

Don't get too worried over copyright material. Under U.S. Law there is "Fair Use" of even restricted and copywritten material. Review the 4 "Balancing" checks for determining fair use under current U.S. copyright law and you'd find that using either logo in the context of a wiki is probably fine. If you ask a company about using their logo it is easier for them to say "you can't use it" than it is to actually research and determine if it's okay in the context being used.

Also note, "DDO" and "Dungeons and Dragons Online" are both copywritten and under the same thinking can't be used in any wiki logo we come up with. We know this to be false of course and the same applies to the graphic logos.

Yeah. I think it qualifies as fair use. It's not like we're pretending to be Wikipedia (which another reason the Wikipedia tag on Mistinarperadnacles' logo would have to be replaced for "wiki") or painting Wikipedia in a poor light.

Oh, while I got you attention Marketroid had a pretty cool idea. Tolero PM'd me this an hour or two ago:

Marketroid even said that one idea that could be a cool logo is to take that symbol and make it be made of the wiki puzzle pieces, instead of a 'globe' of puzzle pieces. That sounded pretty cool/neat to me and players would easily recognize the symbol as DDO but without having to get all funky about "logo" usage.

I think it could be a totally awesome logo, depending on how it's done. By the way, when she says "that symbol", she refers to the round DDO symbol which I can be found at a few places like the forums' favicon and the splash screen (I think).

Tolero told me we could use that one.

Oh, by the way, if anyone has cool concepts but no skill to realize them you might post them. Could give an idea to someone who has the skills to!

I took the input given in this thread and made many versions of my previous logo. The dice now has glossy borders and font is bigger and more readable. I also took some text from the site and put it transparently in the background.

About putting the numbers in the dice, well, I just put a 20 in one of the versions and it points out that it would make a mess if i put numbers in every side. I personally like it simple. I also prefer the versions with black background.

I'm playing with the idea of adding puzzle shapes to the dice sides as if the dice was made by triangular puzzle pieces. May post that soon if i like it.
