wow vs. DDO advertising

Anyways, I haven't loved the DDO adds that I have seen on youtube. The best one is Friends don't let friends play solo, but even that wasn't anything spectacular.

I would love if they expended the so-called intro video, or made commercials more in that style. Maybe showcase some of the more unique features (favored soul, warforged again, artificer + doggy, multiclassing...)

I also saw the add with Chuck Norris. Frankly, I was amused by Chuck himself in the commercial. I am sure he has access to the Internet and knows about the rumors about him...

I would make a hipster add about DDO. Have a celebrity show a picture of a dungeon, then change to a picture of a Dragon, then change to a picture of Treasure, then change to a picture of the Internet.

Dungeons and Dragons. Online. With loot !

What is with all this hostility to WOW?

Apparently there are a lot of people who feel defensive that WoW is doing so much better than every other MMO out there that they have to put it down at every available (or completely random) opportunity.

I personally play both and enjoy them both in different ways. Both games have good points and bad points.

Oh you'll find plenty of that here. Specially about stereotyping the kind of players WoW have and DDO players don't want.

But anyways, that game is always used for MMO comparisons from being widespread, also parodied as cliche.
It's for sure the reason TERA is catering to those players who have never heard of real time combat in a MMO, and obviously never seen a DDO ad.

And that is further trimmed to the players that actually want to get away from the, um, non-realtime action.
There's the complain here in DDO that too many WoW players go on requesting changes that make this game more WoW-like.

Not sure if more ads could help keep DDO in the landmarks of the MMO map since players are exposed to all kinds of games and ads.
Turbine has made large changes to draw in and accomodate the casual players in the market, more shouldn't harm if we could still keep having the things DDO/D&D did best.
(quests, customizing, challenge, detail, etc. i'm sure others can be better at telling what the good stuff is)

I honesty have no idea what you mean by non-realtime action. As far as I have always known MMO's, and that Dates back to day One EQ. The combat has been in real time.

But I guess as HAL said. WoW is the name everyone knows, and popularity seems to invite criticism. Noted.

Honestly, Chuck being in WoW is an old Joke, and I for one was kinda amused by the ad in general.

I usually try to avoid overtly bashing any particular game. When I do criticize WoW, it isn't because it's popular but because I played it for a while at the behest of a friend and it genuinely sucked. It wasn't worth paying the monthly fee to play so I quit playing.

Here are some of my peeves:

• As an old D&D player, I like having the ability to multiclass as I level up. Wow's leveling scheme? I didn't like it. It sucked.
  
• I didn't care for the ridiculously mind numbing quests. Most of them sucked.
  
• Ditto for the emphasis on gear-twinking munchkinry.
  
• These issues combined in a way that created what I considered to be an extremely negative attitude in its gaming community.
  
• I usually like to pay for a game once and have done with it. I see no reason to pay every month for the same video game over and over again. I've never met a game that is that good. DDO is probably the closest to it, though.

I didn't like a lot of things about the game, but its popularity isn't and never was the issue in my view. It just sucks. The only time it didn't totally suck was when I could group up with friends online, and during those times it was fun but still kinda sucked as a RPG.

So what's with all the hostility toward WoW? I like to think it's good taste finally winning out in a public forum. But then, I'm biased.




And for the record, I too was a bit disappointed with Chuck for appearing in that ad. I'm sure he's already gotten over it, though.
