Default Why does my weapon swing miss? Swing animation, no die roll...

    Hey guys,

I have a WF 9Barb/1Ftr. He's built to be a Two Handed Weapon specialist. Noticed a curious phenomenon. It's very difficult to engage enemies on the move. I have noticed on many occassions I will attack, see the swing animation, but get no die roll. Not even a message that says "Miss". Since I usually use a Great Sword, Great Axe, or Maul I would expect my weapon reach to be fairly large. I've actually watched baddies run right through a weapon swing and nothing happens. This happens the most when 1) I'm moving while attacking or 2) I'm stationary and the bad guy runs past to the side of me, trying to reach the magic-user or ranged weapon user behind me. I also have a level 10 dual-wielding Fighter with Spring Attack and I never have this issue. I don't think lagginess is a cause- I have a DSL connection so shouldn't be too many network latency problems and a pretty powerful machine (3.7Ghz, 2GB, 8800GTS). Any thoughts on the cause?

I get this problem alot, especially in PvP when I am chasing someone, it shows that obviously my sword is going right through them but its not registering. I don't know whats wrong with this but I can tell ya its not an individual problem.

    Couple possible answers.

One server to client lag. Sometime what you see one the screen is slightly lag. This is more of a internet connection issue then a computer issue. Just because you have a DSL connection dont mean this not the problem.

Two the enemy have to be there at start of swing. If the enemy run past you in mid swing it usually dont hit.

    Meh, it happens.

Your client program is often "guessing" where a monster is on the server side. But attacks are resloved on the server. So even though you see the mosnters at position X, the server has it at postion Y.

Recent AI changs seem to have exacerbated this problem somewhat (likely the client is having issues guessing the location of the mosnters due to the mosnters having somewhat different behaviors now).

I play side by side with my wife so I can see furst hand how a monster or another player is in a very different position on her screen than it is on mine due to this gussing system they have to deal with network letncy.

The fact that the game seems to flow smoothly is partly just an illusion.

This seems like its gotten worse since the "lag" fix was implemented, but it mostly its the new AI. Now when the creatures run you just can't hit them, regardless if they are a tiny wolf or huge giant and regardless if your swing a shortsword or a greataxe. =(
