Can someone tell me what the littls suitcase symbol is next to all of the items in the shortcut bars in these screenshots? I bought and converted a portable hole and have 5 spots in my backpack, but is there some other way of carrying loot around?

Those are locks... the items are locked to prevent accidental deletion or trade. In your inventory window look at the bottom left corner of the slot section, you should see a lock. Select an item and hit that lock. Item locked!

Oh cool, thanks. Learn something everyday. I don't think I've accidentally sold anything I meant to keep, but I've always worried about it (especially the +1 trinkets that look like vendor gems). Nice to find a feature that will prevent any future worries.
