    Default Game freezes on quit

My guildmates and I are noticing a problem that's occurring for all four of us. When quitting the game the screen goes black and the cursor remains but the game never shuts down. It freezes up the computer and the DDO app can't be closed because when you go to CTRL+ALT+DEL the task manager says that DDO is not responding. Then THAT screen is frozen. You can't do anything but reopen task manager and force quit by signing out or restarting. While in this frozen state, you cannot access anything on the computer. DDO just fails to quit, hangs, and locks up everything. It happens at all times of the day or night, but doesn't happen 100% of the time, which makes it more annoying.

We're a very small guild on Khyber server.

Happens to me on win7 EVERY time I log off if I have switched two or three characters. The answer is to kill the ddo client from the processes, not applications.
Bought my first dungeon master's guide in 1992. My favourite part of ddo is coffee and slayers

I regularly switch characters in a game session. I use alts to farm and use four characters regularly, switching back and forth to avoid ransacking chests.

Maybe it's a bug that only occurs if you log into multiple characters in a single session?

I'm on Sarlona and the same thing happens to me once in a while, but certainly not all the time. It basically locks up my machine so I have to do a reboot via the comp. power button. What happens more often to me, is the game stops responding when logging out. I wait for around 3 min or so to see if will finally log out, but it doesnt, so I ctrl alt delete and use task manager to exit the game. We shouldnt have our comps totally freeze up and reboot it via the power button, it cant be good for the machine.

I am not getting this. And I haven't gotten this in quite awhile. What storage devise are you playing the game out of? HDD,SSD or M.2SSD?

I use an internal SSD for DDO, as do two others in my guild. Not sure but I think the one guy is on a gaming laptop, but the two of us who have this problem most have many characters, and sometimes we switch a couple of times in a session, and we both have internal SSDs.

If you switch characters a lot it may take several minutes to quit the game. Just be patient.

This is normal after swapping between established (has raid/end game style loot on them) toons. This is especially problematic if you're still using the 32bit client version instead of the 64bit client, which usually closes "sooner" than the 32bit one. The only reason why anyone should want to use the 32bit client version now, is if they are experiencing issues running DDO with the 64bit version, or if you are trying out the cosmetics in the store (as the 64bit clients store is broken).

I can tell you that even with a Ramdrive that goes 20GB a second, 32 thread CPU, one of the latest GPUs with 24GB VRAM on it, if I swap through all of my main accounts 16 characters and then try and exit the game, the 64bit client I use can hang there for many minutes after exiting. I have even seen the memory usage go up during this exit phase sometimes, so having lots of memory is essential if you have lots of characters and swap a lot. One time, I caught a 32bit client eating up 15MB of memory a second after exiting the client, this rapidly went above 10GB of memory used, and I no longer remember what stage it got up to, but thankfully I could Task Manager and kill the client before it went further, as it didn't look like it was going to stop any time soon.

The key workarouds for this have already been listed:

Kill the client via Tast Manager, don't exit it.
Don't swap more than 3-4 characters before restarting your client whilst it can still shut down easily.
Use 64bit client if you can.
Make sure you have enough RAM that'll allow the DDO client to chew through as it shuts down (the DDO client typically uses 1.5GB to around 3.5GB of memory - sometimes even more, so you ideally want to have 8GB free AFTER calculating OS and other software requirements so that DDO can use it safely, so at least 12GB of RAM if not more for a more reliable shut down)

the issue is you cant switch to the task manager to end the process you can only hit the sign off windows screen of ctrl alt delete when you select the manager it wont gain focus so you have to log off windows to close all user process's and then relog onto windows.

After you do this, does Alt-Tab work?

This has been an issue for many years (worse at some tomes than others) but usually gets qualified as a memory leak issue that has never been fixed (ie. RAM is being used but not released when it is no longer needed).
