Basically, he interprets it as having come from the Elvish for the creatures, and is pronounced (roughly) "S'wha-(g)heehn" (very breathy "g" sound, almost an "h"). Makes what (for me) has always been a very odd fantasy word into a colorful extension of the larger world.
