I'm sure all the new players will thank you for the "ammo 101" lesson. After only 12 years in the game, I, myself, know this.

I like to keep a full stack of regular, masterwork and +1 bolts in my quiver (in that order), as a back up in case my main stack runs out and I don't notice. Not used often, but it's a nice safety net.

So I'd have to burn thru those before I tap into anything conjured in the main Inventory area. No thank you.

Some people see solutions only from their own experience. Not everyone shares the same perspective.

I do that as well. And since those bolts are intended as back up, then it is doing what it is supposed to when it pulls out the top of the quiver. As soon as that fight is done I conjure some new ones and do the inventory management in a moment of calm. I have also sometimes put the conjured bolts in the hotbar so when they ran out and I conjured more I could use the hot bar to re-equip without opening the inventory (IOW, you don't need to burn through the ammo in the quiver). Any bolts that were auto-equipped have to be regathered into the quiver at some point, but outside of that it is possible to not open the inventory. Bolts I do not want to auto-load I keep in an unequipped quiver (I hardly ever use those anymore because that is tedious).

It would be nice if bolts were like conjured arrows but they are easily manageable. So yes, ammo management is tedious but conjured bolts are the least of the issue IMHO. (hot baring out of quivers would be a better QoL improvement).

Guys... I think crossbows might suck.
As a wise man once said, perhaps the problem isn't the arrow, but the archer...

Couple of things, in no particular order

'R' is bound to autorun by default.

If you summon bolts (Either conjure bolts or flamearrow wand), you can drag the stack from your inventory to your hotbar and equip them from there. Forever more when you summon new stacks they will show up on your hotbar.

Drag the flame arrow wand to your hotbar, then equip it and cast, then instead of doubleclicking in the ammo selection, drag the bolts icon to your hotbar. When the wand runs out of charges you will have to repeat that step, but a replacement wand will pop onto your hotbar automatically assuming you have another wand in your inventory.

When playing a character with rogue levels & 80% returning 1500 bolts will last thru an hour or more of questing, even if using a repeater. Artificers don't get the returning, but guess what, 3000 bolts lasts thru an hour or more of questing as well. Unless you just hold the left mouse button down all the time.

Yes, crossbow users are the red headed step-children of ammo users, but it's not THAT hard to make sure you have enough ammo.

    Not exactly true.

If you have a partial stack, and swap that for a full stack, your hotbar "ammo count" icon will be stuck on the partial stack. And once you start combining partial stacks, or swapping between conjured bolts and flame bolts, etc, more weirdness can appear.

So... again, not that cut and dried, unfortunately.

Agreed, it's not "that" hard. But that wasn't the point (until ~some~ people derailed the original point ).

The point (for those who lost track of such things) was that it's a far cry from "unlimited".

And even with the most generous interpretations, that holds true.

(Edit: actually, the original point was that crossbows do NOT suck. But since that's universally agreed by any with experience in such, we moved on.)
