There is an extended downtime at the moment - it was predicted to be longer than normal, 6 hours, so nothing is unexpected or longer-than-planned (as yet, ahem)...
But as I sit here, thinking about the to-do list for my main, I wish I could log on to one of my alt accounts on a diff server.
I've done IT, I understand that sometimes taking care of everything at once is easier. And there are probably some "meta servers" that get used/upgraded during this time, so maybe there is a practical reason this is not doable. If so, fair enough.
But would it be possible and practical to stagger the Game-World Servers, so there is always an option to play? Breaking them in half - half now, half later - could achieve 2 things...
1) It would encourage more activity on "another" server, where maybe there are not as many players all the time.
2) And it could give some non-Americas players a bit more love, since the usual downtime often hits squarely in their evening gaming time.
(It might also allow "problems" to be solved while only half the servers are down, so the other half don't suffer the same unexpected delays. Maybe some other upsides.)
Dunno, maybe just wishful thinking, maybe simply not practical - but thought I'd toss it out.
