Had an idea for an adventure pack that would spice up the travel screens we’ve all seen hundreds of times. The basic idea is that every time a player travels between two destinations with some reasonable distance between them (small distances with load screens like entering a shop in a House would be excluded) a low-percentage random roll would trigger. A successful roll would bring up a screen that would offer the player the choice of continuing on their original path or to take The Road Less Traveled which would bring up a quest entry screen. The player could then enter the quest.
I envision the quests in this pack being rather short and simple with the emphasis on fun and being changes of pace to whatever the player was doing when the opportunity came up. Each quest would occupy a four level range. A 1st Level through 4th Level player would be offered the same quest, but 5th Level player would have a quest belonging to the next level range and so on up the ladder of levels. A few quick sketches of sample quests I came up with just to illustrate the types of quests I mean:
- The Cavalier at the Crossroads - Help a callow knight (who may or may not be named Eric) recover an artifact from a dragon’s hoard.
- Prisoners of a Petty Pewter God - Rescue a group of villagers being held captive by a Wizard of Oz-esque false god.
- Bogl’s Boot - You awake to find yourself trapped in the bottom of the hermit Hill Giant, Bogl’s boot and must find a way to escape (may have multiple solutions like rocking the boot by jumping on the sides, or using the other items found in the boot to get high enough to jump out, etc.).
