    Default Ogl 1.1?

Is DDO gonna be affected by the changes to D&D OGL?

    My initial thought is "No"

DDO has its own license with WoTC and would not be under the OGL.

This is the at least the 4th time this has been brought up and the answer remains that it is irrelevant as DDO is licensed by WotC.

Even though a couple of "news" articles mistakenly include DDO and Neverwinter in their list of games that will be affected by the change, these games are Officially Licensed products and not covered by the OGL.

Well, for all those who wish DDO would stick more closely to "table top rules", which could be re-interpreted as having a video game that sticks to table top rules... well, one of (not the only, just one of) the motivating factors in the new OGL and all this drama is to make D&D virtual. Thus the official published rules will exist primarily in a virtual world with virtual gameplay. So while DDO will still exist the same way Baldur's Gate exists, the actual core game all of them are based on will become a video game for you to enjoy that way. So instead of trying to make DDO more like a specific edition of the base game, you'll be able to just play the base game as a video game. This is the vision of Chris Cao, the VP of DnD Digital at WotC.

HERE is a youtube video by DnD Shorts covering it and more (going over all the leaks he received from WotC employees who care more about the community and the game than they do Hasbro quarterly reports and margins).

I for one am against the move. Online supplements for table top is great, and lets my real life group play even when we can't all get together as we don't all live in the same city any more. but there is still merit to having video game and table top with friends and using your imagination to realize the action instead of being shown it on a screen, being separate things. Plus the whole methodology and attitude of the current higher ups at Wotc and hasbro is rubbing me the wrong way (the linked video shows some examples of that). Personally, my "table top" group will be shifting our games to another system, most likely Pathfinder 2e.

Not a quote from the linked video, but one I have heard from a few places (paraphrased): "give it a few months and they'll forget about this drama and we can move forward again". Yeah, that's gonna stick with me for a while now.

    Thank you.

(Gotta wonder what the over/under is on this. Maybe just 1 more?... maybe...)
