If a season of the HCL ever dictates how I can build my character, that's a season I'm skipping and not even feeling bad about it.

never forget, HCL is one thing to players, something else to SSG

HCL is a cash cow for SSG - plain and simple.
HCL to (some) players is a refreshing challenge.
HCL to other players is a threat to their daily raid schedule.

For others its a speed bump to cosmetics.
For others its a series of frustration that lead to rage quitting.
For some its a great way to recollect your server firsts including gold rolls
For others its something you just see on the forums.
For some its a way to waste time before coming back to the forums to complain that their alts are too far behind.

It is indeed many things to many people.

I am now waiting for my 156 reaper footprint unlock.
