Default Can this bow build (Falconry) contribute in high epics?

I took a long break after the bow [s]nerfs[/s] "changes" reduced my DPS to less than 1/4 of what it was. I've decided that I might want to try playing this char again, while keeping much of my old gear. That means a WIS-based Ranger/Monk split, but unlike my last build which was a standard Furyshot (alternates between combining Manyshot or 10k Stars with Adrenaline Overload and Arrow of Slaying), I've decided to try for a more Falconry-heavy build than I did last time.

Is this build going to achieve my build goals? My main goals are, in no particular order: 1) reuse some hard-farmed gear like Wallwatch set and my Inferno Sniper, 2) Have some CC options, 3) be able to solo most high-epic and legendary quests on Hard, and low/mid epics on low-skull Reaper, and 4) Contribute meaningful DPS to Legendary raids on Elite or low skull Reaper, and 5) Trap skills, especially in heroic elite or low-skull reaper.

Bonus goals: I want to be able to solo some raids, in particular Fall of Truth, which before the bow and ED changes I had ~70-80% success chance on Normal and ~40-60% on Hard. Soloing Heroic Shroud would be nice too.

Would this build do this? Do I need to swap my Falconry T5s for the Deepwood Sniper and swap Monk for Fighter to get Weapon Specialization? Drop Artificer/swap it for Rogue? I'm trying to get the Ranger PL, but I also want to be able to play in the endgame raiding scene for a little while if I can.

Gearing for this character is half-remembered and incomplete. IIRC I even had a few lootgen items to make up some of the gaps, like CON or Vitality. I just remembered a few important pieces like the Legendary Wallwatch set and a Mythic +4 Legendary Inferno Sniper. Likewise, I'm not married to my feat choice or progression in Epics, though my Heroic feat order can't be played with much without bricking my build. Arty was picked over Rogue because the pet can let me solo some allegedly unsoloable quests. My Giant and Reptilian favored enemies are probably going to be swapped out in high heroics for Undead or Contstruct or something else that has crit immunity so I can shore up that weakness. I'm probably going to drop one or more of my active shots because my setup only allows for 6 attacks - keys 7-0 are for heals and short-term buffs like action boost or Hunt's End.

If you'd like to ask me any questions about my thought processes, please do so. I don't know a lot about the bow changes or the ED changes besides that both screwed my build over hard. All I know is that my old build was one of basically only two ways for bow users to contribute meaningful damage, and if you maxed out that build's potential then you were dealing the damage of an above-average (not amazing, just above average) melee player.

    Default Bump!

I would like to see some of the other regular bow players thoughts as well. I really, really think there's some other bow builds that can be deceptively powerful. Maybe some more people will post after Isle of Dread drops and they're not so busy.

Default My 2cp of random thoughts on the matter

I have had a longstanding desire to make a wis-based, falconry archer since enjoying my clonkcher when it was sort of viable, I forget how many years ago now...
To make a long story short, I don't think it is possible without all the bells and whistles (especially all the rap you can get).

However, based on your objectives, I don't think you should have any problems with the individual goals but rather the sum of the goals - a bit spread thin to have traps, cc, raid worthy, (some) dps even though the difficulty levels you are talking about should be fine.
I would also reconsider the class split since after all the changes there is no longer a considerable advantage to the monk/ranger split; manyshot is a very different beast now.

FYI - there is a highly optimised guide to archer dps on the forums (carpone's iirc) which uses rogue as base class and there is a lot of good info in the guide to pick from.

For the cc option falconry+paralyze would be the go to option but it involves large tradeoffs and a fully developed toon.
Traps don't really matter bar for soloing where one level should be enough; capstone is a big loss imo.

What you have is fine for epic hard and soloing/being a swiss army knife or working in a (static?) group, less so for your dps/raid objectives...whilst the bird attacks were fun and I had hardly any DC problems, they are still single targets - you need a group to be most effective as a select sniper and, since wis-based, at that point it makes more sense to have back-up healer stuff rather than traps or dps. I ran with a very good cc archer a few times but it was divine based and had healing auras - a very different take on the concept.

For what I am running now, much oohmpf still comes from DWS, especially T5 and capstone (even though top tier shiradi now covers much of that - still need to work that out). I had rebuilt as 20 ranger with DWS primary, and Horizon* secondary just before the ED revamp. I am still not sure if to keep the splash of Arcane Archer (for regen sp's even though I never run out!) or Falconry. I have the cores of Aasimar for healing hands. I've paired shiradi main with shadowdancer and EA secondary (wings mobility and sneak ftw!) and have some good single target dps (for my lowly standards at least!) and some ok back-up healing for reaper groups.

If I may, I would also tweak your kit some. You have access to Sharn so get the bow to swap for inferno sniper; over that only raid bows (KT and Dryad). Also quiver of poison is quite weak. *Do you have Saltmarsh? Building around Walllwatch imo is better than silent avenger for slotting unless you go for the mists set bonus too. There are some interesting 2-piece raid / sss sets that might make them redundant but I still don't have those items yet. I've sprinkled in raid and Saltmarsh items for now. What is your artifact? I didn't see one (might be blind).

As a wis-based archer using falconry, it was a lot of fun for me but power-wise nowhere near where I wanted it to be without 1) racial ap's and/or 2) a (static) group. If i had those then I would want to go all-in and add AA paralyze (racial or otherwise), probably do some divine split with some healing and call it a day. If you wanted other info I could see if I have a planner build to post but there are much more experienced players out there for secifics!

ps : if you skip traps swap to druid for the pet!

I love the falconry tree and have no problem in epics. I'm basically an acid shooting ranger (one level of rogue). All level ups were in WIS so as to use the falcon's WIS to hit and damage. The real secret here is increased damage to helpless. Combined with Burst of Glacial Wrath to freeze 'em, and up to 60 per cent more damage, mobs go down fast. Assuming they survived the assassination. I use Coordinated Shot to get their attention and then mow them down as they come at me.

I tried DWS and Horizon Walker and just did not enjoy it. My damage was probably higher with DWS but there were just too many click attacks for me. And what matters DPS when the mob is already dead?

I'm not good at planning builds and this came over enough reincarnations to have a completionist but basically take most of the enhancements in Falconry. (My actual damage clicks from that tree are coordinated shot and death from above.) I'm human so I take enough in the racial tree to max healing, get DDoor and Greater Heroism. From Arcane Archer take the acid line to fourth tier (and morphic arrows and metalline mainly to get enough points to spend on acid imbues) and the two WIS bumps.

So yes, to answer your basic question, falconry will allow you to be "that guy" who kills the mob the melee are running toward.
What do you mean a -6 armor class is no good anymore?

Baldric, Mulray, Tirimon, Clant, Melkazar, Dorakeen, Blastium
If one of them falls off a cliff, it ain't their fault.

I'm not a big ranged player tbh. So I can't say whether your particular build would do well or not at cap. I will say that bow users are very capable at end-game right now. Their single target damage is really high. The most effective ones I see are 20 ranger dex builds with at least some points in Horizon Walker though.

    Hi Melk,
could you answer a few questions since maybe I could use some of your experience?
    1) are we talking the same difficulties as in the OP?
    2) what did you do armor/evasion wise? Quit evasion and up armor via feats?
    3) using BOGW means evocation DC's; along with your armor/evasion choice and wisdom based, how does your end kit look?
    thank you!

Had to re-read the post to see what difficulties he was doing...

    1. I solo usually and have no problem with Hard. Just going through Isle of Dread right now and only the temple battle finale gave me any real problem. I can do Elites solo up to around level 26-27 without too much problem. I avoid reaper unless I fall into a group.

    2. I have the evasion provided by the ranger tree so improved evasion. Current armor is Ravenloft. The one from the raid/runes, I think. The major drawback is light armor means more vulnerability. I think my current AC is around 103. Not much compared to some builds. I don't think I took any armor feats. My dodge is maxed around 20.

    3. Sorry, I am drawing a complete blank on what BOGW is so I may not answer this properly. I do have some points in improving conjuration because I became obsessed with mass frog when it was a feat. As mentioned, if the mob reaches you, it's brutal. So I have an augment for conjuration and I think I did take a feat along the way. I think the main difference might be since I am almost pure ranger most of my feats are auto granted. It allows a little more flexibility. So my WIS is around 77. Might be higher, since the loot change I don't recall. Using Void from Ravenloft with a maxed out set of Longshadow augments which make my falcon death from above right around 103. Normal mobs generally do not survive. Some orange names have also instantly died there. Adherent of the Mists set for armor, bracers, trinket, cloak, neck. Void, Morninglord, Syrania bows along with an ooze maker from Shroud. That one is fun. Fire off a few arrows, make some oozes for distraction and mow them down. The major advantage to the falcon is the instant kills and increased damage to helpless.

Epic Destinies: I have split my destinies between primal and shiradi. I use the shiradi mantle, but went to tier 5 in avatar for the mass frog. Avatar provide close up big damage for when the mobs do reach you. Shiradi provides Hunt's End and prisim.

I hope that helps. Sorry to be disjointed but I don't plan a lot, I play. My archer is Baldric on Cannith if you want to get together sometime so I can check things in real time.

Thanks for taking the time to answer!
So your dex is sufficent to make evasion work even though you are Wis based?
If I'm not mistaken Mass Frog is transmutation and Burst of Glacial Wrath (BOGW!) is evocation; I have them both on my caster druid and they are not quite no-fail on LE+. Would love to have them on an archer for when mobs close in but can't fathom how to reach those dc's
Would love to hook up and compare some stuff but I'm on Argo - thanks anyway!
Unless the op asks for more info or I find some good tweaks to my build am gonna bow out.

The last time I did an AA build for my archer I had two Epic Strikes. The t3 enhancement, Thorn for Shard Storm was my second one, a fire-and-forget anti-personnel system for when mobs are in melee range. Unless you're running in a full group all the time, for me it was must-have for reaper. I didn't feel like I needed anything else.

So, unfortunately your advice came a little late. I had gotten no replies on my thread before you posted and views had nearly stopped, so I assumed I'd have to figure it out myself and I TR'ed. By the time you had posted this, I had already gotten to level 3, so 1 Arty/2 Monk. I wish I had noticed/remembered how much Manyshot had been changed, because otherwise I might have ditched bows and labbed daggers or stars, because there's zero chance I can solo FoT with only 3 or so charges of Manyshot for the entire raid, especially after the ED changes took away my Energy Sheath twist. I'm pretty sure that at this point I'm locked in to my class choice, unless I want to ditch my other 4 levels of monk - But that would still require a bit of reworking my feat choice. I still used Monk after the 10K Stars nerf primarily due to Ocean Stance giving up to +4 WIS and a huge dodge+max dodge boost as a constant effect. Also, I still had a Wallwatch robe and didn't want to farm a new Light Armor version.

I don't have Saltmarsh, but Wallwatch is Sharn, which and I plan to use Legendary Wallwatch gear. When I get back to high epics, I'll lab some of the bows you mentioned, though I don't have the Feywild pack so the Dryad and the Demigod bow is currently off-limits.

I had a closer look at Deepwood Sniper, and while I still think it's an underpowered and confused tree it's probably better than AA post-bow nerfs - Unless the AA wants to go really hard on the Spellpower for elemental arrows. I'll look in to a DWS build for my next Ranger life. As many festival bows and other archer gear as I've farmed, I've declared Janonna as my permanent archer, and if archers just can't contribute I'm just going to not play her until archers become viable again.

Why did you suggest going Druid over Artificer? I only have two levels in arty (i.e. I can put DD at max, UMD rez/heal scrolls, and have a pet for otherwise-soloable lever-pull quests) and I don't see anything that two druid levels would get me besides a pet that I can't revive as easily as the arty pet, so is useful for fewer levels. I guess Lesser Vigor and SNA1 is nice for low levels? I have lots of Cove gems and a few Snow Ele gems.

Thanks again for your thoughts on my Ranger build.

DEX is 39. Full disclosure, have have a supreme tome running.

BoGW- to quote Casper Boy, now I feel like an idiot. It does not list the DC but it works. Frequently. Even undead and things immune to the cold damage will usually freeze solid. And once frozen, the increased damage does the trick.

You are of course right, transmutation for Frog. It is also useful for Spike Growth which is basically a ranger wall of fire and does do some significant damage when you can keep them in it. I checked my character and the Mass Frog DC lists as 60. Looks like I did not take any spell feats this life but do have an augment at +2.
What do you mean a -6 armor class is no good anymore?

Baldric, Mulray, Tirimon, Clant, Melkazar, Dorakeen, Blastium
If one of them falls off a cliff, it ain't their fault.

    A few things I'd change:
Follow through on your idea of the favored enemies to undead/construct. Much more use out of those 2 then reptilian/giant.
Power Critical -> Weapon Focus throwing or Spell Focus Enchant. The +2 ranged power from throwing is more damage then the +2 seeker, or you can pick up +1 DC to your paralyzing arrows.
Holy Strike -> Typically I wouldn't choose this one but with Shiradi core 2 it has it's merits, personally I'd go with a pierce "DR" (silver to be precise). Without marked target you might find more use out of holy strike then I do. Aim for about 60-70% fort bypass. Letting destruction and track reduce it the mobs fort the rest of the way.
Crush weakness -> Embodiment of Law/Harbinger of Chaos. As you don't really have a way to make mobs helpless these just add straight damage to each attack, although small it adds up.
Blinding Speed -> Epic Reflexes + speed augment/epic quiver of alacrity. Reflexes are your most important defense against spells as you have low MRR, so picking up this is just for defense. The quiver/aug will replace blinding speeds effects and save you a feat slot.

Shiradi Mass Chaos -> Inexorable Advance. This is your boss killer, much more useful then the mass confusion

If you do get into endgame raiding try to get a Chaosbow. It's by far the best end game bow, if you run with others who do vulnerability often you can also try to get Aerania

Perfected Dragons Eye, not sure why you chose this one. But they can only have 4 filigree slots max. (Bloodstone has all dps stats)
Not going to go to much further into gear/build it self as everyone's playstyle/goals are different. Just find a set that works for you and go for it. Isle of Dread gear adds a lot of customizability albeit lacks ranged effects.

Thanks for your thoughts! I'm not sure why Dragon's Eye is on the list either. I don't have one, and I don't remember putting it in my build, so maybe it was a mistake? It has +3 Quality bonus to WIS, maybe that was why I put it on.

I actually do have ways to inflict helplessness: The Falconry trip and single-target blind abilities specify that the effects cause "helplessness" even though in a normal D&D sense being tripped or blind isn't considered "helpless". As long as Crush Weakness acknowledges that Falconry considers this helpless, I think it would be a good way to increase my DPS.

Taking Weapon Focus: Throwing as an archer to get more ranged power for my bow is pure shenanigans and I love it. Still, is it going to be more damage than 2 points of stacking seeker, when I have Hunt's End to grant me an extra 16 points of critical threat every 8 seconds? I'm not sure exactly how the math will work out. Maybe I could ditch one of my Monk stance progression feats for it? I'm only using those for Dodge/Dodge cap and WIS, but the WIS bonus is pretty weak. The Dodge is exceedingly helpful IME, so IDK if it's worth it.

I have AA secondary (compatible with Paralyzing) imbues for handling metallic and alignment damage, so I'm probably fine there. I can't do both at once, but I'm getting the Law and Good damage flags from somewhere, so I'm probably okay, though I might want to keep a Metalline+Aligned weapon somewhere just in case I need to bypass, say, a Fiendish Werewolf Skeleton's DR (bludgeoning (handled by AA imbue)+silver+good).

In the past, I've had great success kiting bosses to death, not so much with tanking a bunch of enemies. Still, you're probably right, with all of my Falconry CC and Paralyze arrows Inexorable Advance's DPS is likely way more useful to me than Mass Chaos.

Where do I get Speed augments? I can think of several nice things to do with that extra feat slot (final Monk style, for one), but I've never seen one drop before and the wiki isn't helpful - It just says that they fill a Yellow slot and the best is ML20, but I've never heard of these augments existing anywhere in-game. I've looked at the purchasable augment page, but I'm not seeing it, nor do I see it in the wiki's rare augment section.

Thanks for the bows, I'll try to snag a Chaosbow or similar when I get to that level.

Thanks for the tip! I am trying the tree on my druid but so far have only done the heart version; will try the electricity one asap!
I'm intrigued to see if the new 4th core of shiradi that upgrades pin will have a similar effect too...

Thanks again for your thoughts on my Ranger build.
    Shucks, shame about the timing.
Manyshot is only 3 charges (potential max. is 6 I think - 1 from fillie set and 2 from HW capstone) but recharges quite fast (12 sec?). I actually use it very little but I'm propped up from all the active DWS attacks. Regarding throwers I know nothing; I have this one toon that is a longbow user regardless of where it may be on the meta (back in the day some lives were paiiiiiinful! ) and bar her have only casters so can't help.

I think I'll try and solo FOT and maybe give feedback to get an idea of where my ranger build is...might help as a yardstick? Not as good as the sheath but ring of flickering steel helps for environmental effects.

Pretty much everythiing Yamani wrote I agree with too; whilst waiting for your Caosbow (I almost have the runes to buy it but have never seen it drop yet ) I suggest this bow. Undead and Constructs are my first and second FE choices; all the others come way behind. Inexorable is the epic moment. With the Shiradi core I'm reasonably happy with my Holy Strike. Iiirc the speed augment comes from the snowpeaks event. Apart from his/her error on the helpless/falconry bit, I can't add anything else.

Again, DWS is a solid tree overall but imo as an all or nothing investment; my leveling buddy dips for the defenses in the lower part of the tree but on a multiclass I would probably avoid it.

As for druid, as you will be wearing robes, I see it as a flavour choice to get a pet with just one level of investment (it was conditional to losing your trapping). Otherwise yes, for some low level utility but not much else.
I'll see if I have any of the past wis-archer build attempts on my other computer - if there's anything worth mentioning I'll post again. tc!

I can give you my $.02 on the matter. If you want to build a dps archer, you will be more rogue than ranger. If you want to go with a Falconry build, you can go more ranger with wisdom. Keep in mind that if you choose to go T5 in Falconry, you do get the insta-kill bird that works well until you start realizing in Epic and Legendary, that just about every champ and a lot of other mobs have deathward of some sort. So, be prepared for that. The 25% HP boost may be worth it, but you will sacrifice T5 DWS with 25% doubleshot and heavy draw.... so dps goes down, but survivability goes up. If you want some build advice around Falconry, DM me and I can maybe help.... I no longer post builds here as the devs like to read and nerf good bow builds.....
