Default First life TWF EK/Feydark build - Advice needed

    Hi!
I'm looking to start DDO, and thought I should probably plan my build before jumping in.

I tried to adapt this build, to a TWF, Dex based alternative

Im not looking to get super-deep into Reaper, or do much of anything past limp to level 30 and have a good time, is this viable at all? What could I do better? I'm 1005 sure I have no idea how epic destinies work, so Im prepared to throw out that entire section!

    Welcome to the game!

I think the basic premise is good, but as a new player I think you might enjoy the same build as a warforged instead of wood elf because you can heal yourself with repair spells, and have several quality of life immunities.

For the highest two weapon fighting feats you only need a maximum of 17 dexterity (character creation points + tomes + any level up points are the only things that count for this), and for basic two weapon fighting you only need 15 dexterity.

Your stat distribution is a bit off, and you'd only have 28 or 32 points to spend as a new character.

Here is what I would recommend as a warforged 2wf sorcerer (28 pt build):

    Str: 08 (dump)
    Dex: 16 (+ 1st level up)
    Con: 10 (+2 from being warforged = 12)
Int: 08 (dump, take UMD as your skill choice)
    Wis: 06 (dump)
Cha: 16 (+ remaining level ups)

For feats, you don't need force of personality if you are warforged, and two weapon defense is not really worth a feat. Blinding speed isn't necessary because you can just cast haste on yourself.

I think extend, maximize, and quicken are good replacements but you'd want to take them earlier than epics. They also let you play being a spellcaster in between hacking and slashing.

There's slightly more complicated things that you can do to boost the toon as well:

1 level of barbarian makes you run faster and gives you access to all martial weapons so you don't need to spend a feat on scimitars etc, but you could take knights training to make some weapons better (https://ddowiki.com/page/Knight%27s_Training).

1 level of favoured soul gives you a stance to boost your melee based off your charisma score via the warsoul enhancement tree.

The downside of these two is that you'd loose the EK capstone, which is a considerable melee dps loss. There are tradeoff's for many build choices in this game.

    Anyway, have fun!

I suggest: You to choose if u want to play melee 2 wf: go ranger or rogue (vistani)

As first toon i suggest barbarian or paladin 2 handed fighting.
Or ranged (repeater artificier or inquisitor)

Sorc is very good as caster. But is very squishy. Far from optimal if u want to melee as first life.
Then first life caster is not easy for new player, considet go wizard or cleric. For self heal

Then if u really like caster melee play i strongly suggest this

Thanks - I'll take a look at warforged, I didnt realise they could Repair to self heal.
Is there much point in getting the Proficiency feat? It feels like -4 is a minor penalty for the cost of being locked into one weapon type - and are the Feydark Shortswords any good?

1 level of favoured soul gives you a stance to boost your melee based off your charisma score via the warsoul enhancement tree.

The downside of these two is that you'd loose the EK capstone, which is a considerable melee dps loss. There are tradeoff's for many build choices in this game.

    Anyway, have fun!
Im going to single class I think - multiclassing is something for future lives once Ive got the basics down

How does the Epic Destiny part look? I have no idea how that works at all.

Thanks, but I'd rather have a "less optimal" time with a character I actually engage with than playing one I don't engage with that's "easier". I want to enjoy the game, rather than have to drag myself through something I dont enjoy for the promise of getting to play something I enjoy at an indeterminate "later" time

Warforged are (recently) "free", but only after at least one character on your account (on that server) has gained 400 Total Favor. Until then, you'd have to buy the race (not recommended, considering).

Also, understand that WF do not automatically come w/ the Repair spell - that requires a caster w/ that spell in their list.

It also means that, for most parties, no one else will be able to heal you - most Healer Hires do not have Repair spells, and few builds (outside Artificers and socially-minded Wizards) carry Repair.

As a Sorcerer, which is already limited in the number of different spells they have, you will have some tough choices to make to fit in the largest(?) Repair you can carry.

The short answer is: You don't need it; EK Core 3 gives proficiency with both Martial Weapons and Light Armor. (Core 1 gives Simple Weapons, but Sorcies start w that as a class feature.)

    o https://ddowiki.com/page/Sorcerer_El...nts#Spellsword

The long answer is that DDO does not use a "d20" combat system (any more). A solid DDO combat build might not miss -4 (as they'd still only miss on a natural "1", which is always a miss, regardless), but this build might feel it - and doubling your miss chance (or worse) is not a good thing.

There's nothing very "non-basic" about multiclassing (and you're covering "non basic" with this build to start with ); you have your build planned, you follow it carefully, level by level, it all works out.

Sorcerers do get a serious boost in power for being pure when they hit Level 20 - but, if you're only going to TR (see next!), you'll only see 20 for a couple dozen quests, then you TR. Meanwhile, by multi-classing, getting to 20 is faster and easier, so it's an overall win.

(Just as Sorcerer gets a boost at Core 20 (aka "the capstone"), it also gets one at 18; 19 is nothing particularly special. If you do take a dip 1-level into 1 class (FvS?), you might as well take a second one. Wizard gives you 3 utility spells (maybe Shield, Protection from Evil and... +10 Swim speed? Or Sonic Blast, for box breaking? Or...???), a 1 AP Invisibility spell (aka the "Easy Button"), and a free additional metamagic Feat! Something to consider for what is already a "non-standard" Sorcie build.)

I would strongly advise not planning to go to 30 on your first life. Reincarnating at 20 gives you several strong advantages...

    • 34 point build for your next life.
    • Sorcerer Past Life (+1 DC to blasting spells, +20 spell points)
    • Understanding the game better, and (probably) making a better build!
    • Knowing the quests better, so Epic is not a complete new experience (which is always slower)
    • A chance to farm gear for your 2nd life, to make that go easier
    • At 1750 Total Favor (usually ~around~ L14 or so), you get a free +2 Stat Tome of your choice - this would give you TWO +2 Tomes by the time you run to 30.
(And if you choose Int as your first tome, that's +1 more Skill Point/level on your 2nd life. Your choice for the Tome on your 2nd life can be combat-oriented (Str, Cha, Dex, Con), and that applies immediately. Skill points are not "retro-active" for levels before a +Int boost, so you want that preexisting for Level 1.)
    • You can plan a strong purely HEROIC build (to 18 or 20) without worrying about Epic power considerations.
    • You know what mistakes to avoid, a knowledge that is doubly important in Epics.
    • Almost certainly other stuff that I'm forgetting

On a separate issue... you're a new player, and since it's critical to the build (allowing Charisma to apply To Hit and Damage, plus more), I wanted make sure you understood this...

It either costs 495 DDO Points (which are not hard to earn, but this is a moderate expenditure), or can be earned easily for free if you have access to Fables of the Feywild adventure pack (which costs 2,495 DP, an amount that's harder to earn, but can always be bought for cash).

OP, to help make things easier for yourself, would you consider a two handed fighting sorcerer?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvXcybkcCeM

Bear in mind this is on Strimtom's pretty tapped out character with all the gear. A first life version would still be super fun.

If you have the feywild expansion (as a new player, probably not, and I would not recommend splurging on any expansions until you spend time to see if you enjoy the game or not), I'd say just swap DEX with STR in my stat layout earlier on.

Otherwise, swap DEX with STR and put all stat levelups into STR, take 2HF feats instead of 2WF feats. Ezpz

There are some spells that you really want to take, moreso as a melee EK

lv 1 - repair light, shield, jump, maybe expeditious retreat but you can easily farm clickes from the korthos beginner area
lv 2 - resist energy, blur (can swap out when you get displacement), gust of wind, maybe invisibility but this can just be scrolled
lv 3 - haste, displacement, rage
lv 4 - dimension door, maybe ice storm but this can be scrolled (it's for the slow effect on mobs), maybe fire shield but this can be scrolled
lv 5 - repair critical, maybe protection from elements but this can be scrolled
    lv 6 - reconstruct
lv 7 - maybe protection mass but this can also just be scrolled
lv 8 - arcane tempest, otto's irresistible dance
    lv 9 -

As a melee 1st life with no stat tomes, you most likely will not be landing any spells that require a difficulty check (DC), so I'd recommend staying away from them for now - if you wanted a spell blasting sorcerer we'd build you something different.

Sorcerers can swap a spell from their spell book every 3 days via the class trainer, just in can you need to swap things around.

I'd probably take repair light at level 1 + shield (jump helps later and is less necessary with high strength), probably repair moderate or serious as your next repair spell. These will probably last you until repair critical (class level 10) if you have the maximize metamagic. Once you have repair critical and reconstruct, you don't really need anything else. You want quicken at or before you take class level 12 for your repair spells.

I knew there was something I forgot when I was playing around with the builder! Yep, thjat

"non-basic" was a poor choice of words - I meant it in the sense of multiclassing exponentially increasing options for advancement trees and the like FvS has been suggested as a decent dip twice now - im definitely considering it, I like the look of the class as a whole.

I agree with what you were saying, it was just a box of worms I was trying to avoid, and maybe I shouldn't have been!

Yep - Im aware! I'm always happy to chuck a fiver on a free to play game like this, to support the devs, even if I dont stick about. Diversity in the industry is good!

I think Im going to take your advice and just play to 20 and reincarnate - it sounds like a solid suggestion!

That's actually the build I tried to adapt into TWF (personal preference for aesthetics!)

That's good to know! Im definitely not looking to be blasting - its the "spellblade" feel I was going for.

Ravenloft days? I actually don't know if it's three 16 hour "days" or full 24 hour days. Most days in ddo are really 16 hours long, such as free dice rolls.

Well no one has said this yet so here goes:

(A real spellblade would be 8 fighter/12 wiz)

    20 sorcerer
    Drow
    Dex 17
    Con 12
    Char 17 + level ups

    1) maximize
    3) Twf
    6) precision
    9) itwf
    12) extend
    15) ic puncturing
    18) gtwf

    Max skill spellcraft.

Dual shadow blades and Feydark, vistani.

Refer to various Dark Mary Builds (ranger, monk forums)

400 favor is pretty fast, you can easily have it by Level 5-6 if you do most of the free content, no big obstacle there.

Throw together a FIre/Electric Sorc with Sonic Blast and 2x SLA's and crush content at that level, done. AND it will give you a taste of what a "vanilla" sorcie feels like, and then you'll have a mule to dump gear on later.

OP, you can also do this build on a wizard on any race and self heal via death aura & negative energy burst by using the undead form from the palemaster enhancement tree.

The wizard version is a lot more forgiving IMO, as you get lots more feats, more spell slots and earlier, the undead immunities are even better than warforged, and you can leverage the harper tree (premium feature but unlockable later in the game) to get the battle trance for intelligence (that you would otherwise need favoured soul levels on your original sorcerer idea).

The smaller SP pool doesn't matter because you are melee, so it's just self healing & buffs.

I did consider that - It just needs so many different trees and investments, I feel like the cost isnt worth it - unless its an idea that could go super-low investment in a racial tree?

I am planning to use that as a base eventually for a STR based character along the same lines, but without Feydark. (im also considering a more heavily-feydark oriented build once Ive built up some boosts to Illusion DCs)

PM/EK doesn't need anything from racial trees so they can be ignored - gnome/deep gnome can give you greater colour spray, but it's not crucial, and DG can give illusion DC's but again not crucial. Not much else in other tree's that benefit's a melee PM... maybe runspeed via tabaxi, or the melee boosts from WF & HOrc.

Easy AP split for a pure 20 wizard PM/EK would probably be: 41 EK (capstone), at least 13 in PM for undead form and both neg amp enhancements, 12 in harper for INT to hit/damage/trance - that leaves 14 points to spend wherever you like.

Also, nothing wrong with rolling up a few different toons on different servers to try out different builds and see what the population is like for your play time. Easy way to get more store points too
