    Question Game Crashing When alt-tab

Hello all, I recently purchased a new gaming laptop that comes with directx 12, and a 2560x1440 screen resolution.
I often like to wiki things as I play so i'm continuously alt-tabbing when i play, but every single time I do now, the client crashes spawning a directx error. Ive already downloaded directx 9 through 11 so that's not a solve like most others have had, not to mention that my control scheme changes after every crash so i have to continuously change them back.

Don't even get me started on how useless 1440p is when the UI is tiny, so you're forced to play in 1080p full screen and not full screen(windowed) like i'm used to.

The inability to alt-tab and proper UI scaling really kills the game for me now :/

Any crash solutions would be welcome.

Dang, that sucks and I'm sorry to hear it.

Sadly, the only time I've seen the game crash on alt-tabbing is with DirectX12 running, so my only solution is to switch to using DirectX9 (not just downloading it, but switching to it in the in game options).

And I know you said you downloaded it already, but I mention it again because I have helped people in the past with this problem who said they did the thing but they actually skipped a step or didn't actually do what they said they did, so I find it helpful to really spell it out (ie: manually install the old DX files and do not let your computer auto-install it as it will detect that you have the better version and cancel the download without telling you, just stating "update complete" instead. As such, make sure the game is actually using 9 via the in game graphics options. If it can't be selected there, then it wasn't actually installed manually).

And if after all that you still are having this problem, then I do apologize and hope someone else is able to help.

    Sorry again and good luck!

edit: as for the control schemes changing... that sounds like one of the local settings files is being overwritten on crash. You may want to - after setting up your game settings - making a copy of that file so that if/when it happens again you can paste the file instead of manually redoing it all to restore your preferences. There should be a Dungeons and Dragons Online folder in your My Documents folder (where in game screenshots get saved) which should have the UserPreferences.ini file in it.

Thanks, but no good, manual download didnt work, and the graphics settings stay the same, just the controls change which is odd.

I used to have similar issues, I found it helped to keep a browser open at all times otherwise Alt-Tabbing would cause a significant number of crashes. As a result (and numerous other reasons) I now run in Windowed mode which stops this from happening and I have far far fewer crashes. Generally speaking I only crash during zoning.

By manual download, were you trying this?

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=8109

There is also a web installer link very similar to this. I believe the web installer might not install certain files if it thinks you already have a newer version.

I think I solved my zoning crashes by setting a fixed value (I chose 60Hz) for the Refresh Rate in Adv. Graphics settings - worth a try.
Maybe it works for the Alt-Tab issue too?

I had it set to 165 Hz as that's what my screen can do, but i'll try 60

    Exclamation Solution(?)

I think i've found a possible solution albeit an annoying one. I force-changed my laptops display to run at 1920x1080p and not 2560x1440p and that seems to have fixed it. It's running as I type this, but I would have to keep continuously changing it back to 1440p every time I stop playing because I play other games in 1440p and change it back to 1080p when I want to play DDO.

Kind of a bummer that in 2022, the devs havent become acclimated to modern times and implemented UI scaling/4k textures/or even support for 1440p screens.

With the offline version, there are TWO steps. Download and run, then navigate to the folder you typed in, and run the setup.exe file created.

    Good luck.

Wait... if it's telling you this, it means you are not manually installing the older versions. When you click the big red download button, do NOT run, but instead SAVE to your computer. Then go to where it saved, find the DXSETUP.exe file, and double click that yourself to run that from there. That is what we mean when we say manually install. Letting it run from the website means it will not actually give you the older files and you will still be using 12, which crashes on alt-tabbing.

DDO is a really old game.
Have you tried to run ddo as legacy application as windows 10 instead of windows 11? may work may not.

you new laptop is it nvidia?gpu if so you can get the nvidia driver removal and compeltely clean uninstall it redo nividia drivers then reinstall dx11 or older

On my system i disable most of the high functioning graphics because i know some functions tend to crash, i tend to start with medium setting then adjust setting to high, stops when it get laggy or crashes am certian DDO cant function at very high res, not sure if the graphic engine in game can cope.

Nah, i'm an all AMD kind of person lol, but I dont think the graphics are the problem, it only crashes when my display is set to 1440p and not anything less, i suppose the game cant handle the switch between 1440p and 1080 when alt-tabbing

My solution is to go to window mode

In full screen it will chrash

Wkndow mode is annoying because the graphics ahd brightness ate completely differnt than fullscreen much harder to dee in any dark quests thst ate slready hsrd to see swims etc
