Returning player and new crafting question

Just returned again, and was reading the update 50 stuff. I have a sword of shadows (and some other VON stuff), but everyone says if you can only have 1, keep it heroic (butwith new system, I could upgrade it). My question, are they still unique? Can I use my SoS to farm for a second, so that I can have one to upgrade, or does it have to stay in the bank for VON 5-6?

the short answer is yes..

you will need to start with a single level 9 item, upgrade it to level 20.. then get your second level 9 item.. upgade the 20 -> 30 and the 9 -> 20 .. then loot the last level 9 item

Absolute rubbish.

You can have as many SoS as you want, they are not exclusive or anything.
