Character Screen , Source of waterfall?

I never really paid attention but I was looking at the waterfall on the character selection screen. I scrolled back and forth, and I am trying to figure out where the source of the water is coming from?
It looks like our characters are standing on the top of a hill,
There isn't higher ground behind the waterfall, no level ground. You can see mountain range out in distance through the trees. Nothing indicates where this water is coming from..

Are we to believe that water only flows from no where to this hill and no other? What is going on with the mechanics in this game? Perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist on this hill...!! Is it a magic hill? Was it created from the same guy who made a magical fantasy world?
