    Default Whats the deal with the Foghorn?

    Running on G'land and I keep hearing a "foghorn." its actually a long draw on a cello but I can only liken it to a fog horn. I've heard it in Wynwood hall, the harbor (it's different from the other harbor ambient sounds), market and all of the houses in Stormreach, heard it in Barovia the other night and in sharn and the cogs. I've heard it all different times too. like 3:07 in the afternoon, 7:22 at night, 8:05 and then again at 8:08 pm (both in Wynwood hall) 4:40 am. It doesn't seem to adhere to any rhyme or reason.

    It's rather annoying although it has kind of become a joke in my raid group when we hear it.

    I mean if it keeps up i think i might turn it into a drinking game! "When you hear the fog horn take a drink" lol. Might have to turn in all those stings of prayer beads for pots now.

    In all serious though what is this? i know others on G'land are hearing it but i wonder if anyone else on any other servers hearing this "foghorn?"

    Ive only been hearing it since the introduction of U52. so in my mind i think 1. it has to do with isle of dread and we are going to have to hear this daggum horn until its release or 2. there was a sound file that was corrupted on the U52 build and it just hasnt been addressed yet?

    It's the Fatesinger Mantle. Once it's active, anyone in a MASSIVE radius of that Mantle user, will hear the Foghorn. Incidentally, you can have them moving around fidgetting in a local area (running around in a circle for example) and constantly cause it to fire (by moving out of your range and then moving back into range again), giving you a VERY long and ending Foghorn as each trigger overlaps the previous Foghorn.

    It's quite annoying whether you get a continuous sounding, or many of them constantly triggering. Used to be worse and much louder, it's volume got reduced recently I believe, so some respite from it at least.

    If that's the case, I can't explain that. Although now it's got me thinking if players from different instances might cause that. Let me do a quick test to check that. Be right back.

    Nope, players with the Mantle on in different instances don't cause it. So most likely whatever it is, is more likely to be local to something you are using on your character.

    Default Silence!

    Everyone needs a hidden character buff, Foghorn_heard that counts down from 60 secs. While active, foghorn sound does not play.

    Nah, it just needs more cowbell between each bass tone; Like a buoy in the harbor.

    Ah, you're unaware of the range that I am talking about. Check the image below; Manjierr is where the player would hear the Mantle Foghorn by Frenzied (character I was on).

    You will 97% NOT know when such a player with the mantle is running by. Because the range is from where you drop down at Sharn (almost at the mail box), and where the 2nd group of quest givers is. It's basically almost beyond visible range.

    But as you have identified that spot as hearing it, I will go around and see if I can track it down. Be right back.

    :: edit ::

    Just checked that spot in your image and I have no Foghorn activation here. So most likely you encountered a player running around either by the trainers, over by the House C entrance area, or by the Airship entrance and North Teleporter.

    :: further edit ::

    The location required at around that spot in your image to trigger such a sound, is the North Teleporter, the passageway between the Freshen the Air quest and towards the central Marketplace, and the bottom of the left flight of stairs coming down from the trainers, almost by the Devil Assault quest entrance. Coming down midway down the ramps or midway across the bridge from Searing Heights or the Twelve. So quite a lot of places where a player with the Mantle can be running past and you wouldn't know they were going by, AND just at the Marketplace Bank entrance (with the mail box), so LOTS of opportunity for players to go by in that location in your image.

    Odd. I don't think I've ever heard this "foghorn."

    For anyone wondering, here's a more visual representation of the issue:

    The red arrow shows where OP was roughly and where I took this map image. On the right, is the "zone" you need to enter or go through with the Fatesinger Mantle active to give the person at the location of the red arrow the "Foghorn".

    Here, is a video I took earlier that shows this. WARNING, those who hate the Foghorn, do not listen with high volume. It's annoying as heck.

    So if you're hearing the Foghorn, at a city location like the Marketplace, it's because there's someone running around the outskirts of the highlighted white circle on the map on the right. Every time they enter the area, the Foghorn sounds. If they happen to enter and exit the area like in the video above, it will continue to fire.

    It used to be a lot worse, I remember it was louder and went on for longer which made the constant trigger of it SUPER annoying.

    Thought this was another thread heading down the furry path.

    yeah thats the stupid sound. and the range on that thing is stupid nuts. now i have to figure out how to turn that aspect of the sound off! its dumb that it has to be designed to trigger in an area almost the size of the market. why cant it be touch range? i could say soooooo much more about this but then my post would just get taken down

    anyways annoyance found. im still going to turn it into a drinking game though! Cheers Mate.

    What the F are you talking about?
    If a serious question, this thread is about a Special Effect.

    Thx J1ng, that video really does explain it well.
    I have never noticed this as I'm always playing with sounds off.

    The whole tread is about sound effects. Ever since the early nineties sfx has been short for sound effects.

    I've submitted to Cordovan to have the title changed to say "sound effects" instead so that there is NO confusion.
