The variance is huge. The servers are up anything from a couple of hours before the announced time, to a few days later...

A race condition ? ("which character is dying fastest ?") or a rare condition ?

a race condition is when you have 2 or more (cpu) threads that are not locked by a mutex (mutually exclusive flag) and one of the threads reads or writes to or from a memory location so that the value in that memory location is different as expected or required.

If you don't set a mutex various threads will run a function at more or less the same time. You have to tell the compiler to run this function in a single thread only.
