Red face Things I'd like to see for Mabar (updated)

Howdy ya'll Nonviolence here again. I'm just makin' this thread ahead of time to anticipate what we might get for the 2021 Mabar around Fall. Spooky Summer was a hoot after all.

Also looking forward to other new/updated events juss sayin' ...... d(O_O)b

Quests I'd like to see added or swapped in with others:

Spooky Version of 'Where there's smoke' called 'Where there's evil afoot'
    • 1. Change the Dogs into Barghests (Add those to the game OR switch em with Worgs/Hellhounds). You have to damage them to 10% Health, and then throw a purifying charm at them to catch em. Like the Silver Flame throwing-fire from Spinner of Shadows.
    • 2. Fill the wilderness with Shadows, Troglodytes, Zombies and Skeletons.
    • 3. Add Bone Golems to the game, have one guarding the farm/homestead. The farm has been converted into a Dark Wizard's Laboratory.
    • 4. Scale the tower and defeat the Necromancer from Karrnath and his twisted Golem Minions.

    -
Spooky Version of 'Blockade Buster' called 'Skeleton Crew' or 'Blockade Sanctifier'
    • 1. Fill the ships with Unique Undead, Zombie Gnolls on 1, Zombie Orcs on 2, Zombie Ogres on 3.
    • 2. Have to find a Crest and use it to unlock a Phylactery on each ship.
    • 3. To finish you have to kill the raised Captains and the Liches that control them, 1 on each ship.
    • 4. Add Corrupt Water elementals and Giant Crabs on the deck. Undead Pirates too.

    -
Spooky Version of 'Caged Trolls' called 'Spell-Twisted Trolls'
    • 1. Restructure the map for this quest, adding a secret passage behind the treasure room that goes into a small open area/thicket that leads to the real Ritual Site.
    • 2. You go all the way in one direction for 2 levers, open treasure room, then find a hidden lever and go to end fight.
    • 3. Mobs are Emerald Claw lackeys, Death Knights, Blood of Vol Priestesses, and various Undead, Oozes and 1 Named Umber Hulk for a star (Call him Blackshell).
    • 4. Boss is Undead Troll crafted by Dark Magic. He's immune to Acid, Frost and Sonic. Electricity Heals him. Fire does Double-Damage. Regens HP at a fast rate. Pierce Damage is ignored, as is Bludgeon Damage. Slashing is the way to go.

    -
Items I'd like to see added to the existing loot list:

    Cosmetics
    -
    • 1. A white version of the Reaper Cosmetic Mail. Helmet and Cape too OBV.
      -
    • 2. Skeleton Hat Cosmetic (from the Skull Effect added by the Skull Grenade). You added the Pumpkin Hat years ago now, but every update and no Skull Hat? C'mon add it. I like it a lot.
      -
    • 3. Tattered Spectral Dragon Wings. A Cape (like the Reaper Wings) that gives you a set of Exposed Bone wings with gauzy, see-through remnants of dragonflesh on them.
      -
    • 4. Black Cat Tail & Ears/Hood (Cape and Hat combo) that looks like a Cats (Obv).

    -
    Augments
    -
    • 1. A Green Augment called the Emerald of Dark Life (+40 False Life ML 24).
      -
    • 2. A Blue Augment that adds Invisibility Guard to another item.
      -
    • 3. A Red Augment called the Ruby of Crawling Shadows (Adds 'Grip of Death', a Vorpal 6 Sec Hold Person without the Helpless effect ML 24).
      -
    • 4. A Red Augment called the Ruby of Unyielding Darkness (Adds 1d6 Entropic/Untyped Damage, ML 1) Epic Version is ML 28, Ruby of Greater Unyielding Darkness and Adds 6d6 Entropic + Legendary Blinding).
      -
    • 5. A Purple Augment (Epic Only) called Amethyst of Enveloping Shadows (Adds Inflict Vulnerability to a weapon, similar to Frostbite). ML 28.
      -
    • 6. A Green Augment (Epic Only) called The Cursed Eye (Adds Anti-Magic Guard to any armor, prevents Spellcasting when you are struck). ML 24.

Really like all these suggestions & the ghost ships in particular would tie in really nicely with both that original chain & the blood tide storylines. The expanded crit profile on those items is pretty much a no-go, that's not something they're willing to put on things any more with the way different abilities etc. have been added more recently, though different damage dice (eg. the maul with 3d4 instead of 1d10) or weighted dice would be more likely & the other effects on them seem reasonable - that vorpal wild magic one is a particularly fun idea as an expansion of the polycurse effect & i'd love to see it on a couple of other weapon types too, maybe even as an effect on loot from the forthcoming wild hunt themed raid that's been mentioned previously.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what's it is weird and scary to me.

Thanks! I agree it does match up with those storylines. Also makes the quest much shorter. Maybe the quest ends by setting the boats on fire with Oil Barrels?

Ah ye make a good point, guess I'll change the dice to be more compelling, like a 3W wep at 20 instead of 1/1.5/2

    Agreed

Hmm I'm tryin' to think of other shorter quests to Spookify. Maybe Archer Point? Haunted Point...

Has there even been an item in DDO that uses the life-force of those near / around the caster to fuel a spell? Such as an item with this effect would have a chance of procking when a spell is cast.

Example: Darksun’s Defilers which leech energy from the land, stealing life away with every spell they cast and leaving only dead ash behind. Thus the (evil) act of draining in and of itself becomes a weapon of mass destruction.

I mean, I was just thinking about Blightmancer Universal Tree for Sorc (if you change Elemental Sorc to a 1-tree Multiselector).

Would also be an interesting effect on a weapon, or maybe as a clicky. Like Horrid Wilting.

    -- Update.

    -- Another Quest Idea:

Spooky Version of 'Maraud the Mines' called 'Cleanse the Mines'
    • 1. Map is now full of Undead Gnolls, Cinderspawns in place of Fire Elementals and Skeleton Minotaurs, all raised by a Fiendish Gnoll Necromancer.
    • 2. Need to go around Mine lighting Sacred Torches a la From Beyond the Grave. Kill Cinderspawn, Ward fire, Talk to Elemental. Do this x5.
    • 3. Kill Evil Wraiths, Free Positive Energy Spirits from Thrall-control by killing Dark Priests.
    • 4. Defeat Gnoll Necromancer in the area where the previous boss was found (in the normal quest) Boss is surrounded by Worgs, Ghouls, Wraiths and Evil Efreet.

    -- Update.

    -- Another Quest Idea:

Spooky Version of 'The Giant's Supplies' (from Threnal Wilderness Quests) called 'The Skeleton's Supplies'
    • 1. Map is now full of Undead Giants & Drow Skeletons. Bring Bludgeon :P
    • 2. Traverse the Cave and destroy Necromantic Cauldrons / Shrines and Ritual Cabinets (breakable shelves).
    • 3. Defeat [10] Fire Giant Soul Callers (with Hellhound companions).
    • 4. Eliminate the Raised High Priest and his Drow Cohort.

    -- Other Item Ideas:

Peculiar Pick-Me-Up - 30 Minute Cooldown (drink/beverage) bestows same effect as Sprint Boost + Haste Boost for 30 sec. Maybe 1 hour cooldown?

1-off Consumable "The Grim Ganache Cakelet" grants +10% Offhand Strike (TWF) and +10% Strikethru (THF) for 30 sec.

I'd simply like to have more meaningful stuff to trade in my dragon scales for. I'm really not interested in all these Reaper clothes ... Although I'm not having anything against the colour black for Mabar clothing.

Why not a purely black quarterstaff, made from truly dark "darkwood" ? Of from obsidian (vulcanic) ?
"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

Gotta say I love your ideas.

Not a huge fan of making a quest that's supposed to be a short challenge out of something with mandatory swimming, but to keep with your theme and chosen title, rename "Guard Duty", a quest that's not run that often anymore, to "Skeleton Crew", and have the players invade both ships in order to keep them from coming ashore.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

And yes, I do agree with you, the swimming would be quite tedious in the context of Blockade Buster, but I figured you could have the NPC on the boat simply teleport you to each ship when asked in a dialogue menu. Something like "Which ship will you attend to first? Hurry!" and then *Zoop* you're on the ship. Either that or have the bay be full of debris that forms a kind of ground between the ships, held together with spiderwebs. Waterspiders!

But I also like your idea, Guard Duty could definitely work.

Yes, it would be cool if we could generate Darkwood weapon raws, the same way certain weapons show up in the loot table with a better base damage for crafting. Would be interesting.

Also, more visual difference between material types would be welcome in general. Like Densewood, Blueshine, Darkwood, Stone, Flametouched Iron, & Byeshk (Which ought to be a dull purple).

As for what to spend your Spectral Dragon Scales on... I added 3 items in the Original Post that might be cool.

Other things you might be able to buy:
    • -
    • Another Pet - Maybe an Umbral Cat?
      -
    • A 1-off Clicky Item (1 use per shrine) that summons a CR 35 Umbral Gargoyle that doesn't actually suck.
      -
    • A floating symbol of Mabar (using the representative rune) that floats nearby you. Similar to the dedication to Cancer Sufferers... or was it Vets? That DDO did some years back. Can be toggled on and off.
      -

I also feel like the Short and Long Broomsticks need to be reworked slightly visually, because its kinda hard to tell what it is. Same for the Witches Hat. It's too small.

I especially like your Spooky Version of Blockade Buster. Yes please.

A handful that I've thought about in the past having Spooky versions and why:
    • A Shadow Falls on Stormreach (Nightfalls on Stormreach) : The Stormreach streets are still haunted by those that died at the hands of their fellows in fits of the Madness Rage. Could also use the Marketplace map from Chronoscope or a combination to show where the two city districts are connected. Must exorcise the spirits and purify the streets to end the hauntings.
    • Sinister Asylum (Sane Asylum) : I've seen ghost shows, they can make this super creepy - add in the three versions but for different reasons, make it less colorful more dark and sinister and really look abandoned. Would be a great place to introduce the Gibbering Mouther creature. Could have Zombified Taken? Not just gross but extra putrefied gross. Big boss could be an Alhoon (Illithilich). Obviously a pair of Undead Beholders would be fine. Maybe some recolored version of the Living Nightmare that can be used for the undead creature Dream Vestige. Totally makes sense it would be haunted lots of people were tortured and died here.
    • Blood Red Rain (Red Rain) : The murder victims still haunt their homes and they are out for blood. Only issue with this is none of them seemed particularly evil so who or what would have raised them to cause mayhem?

Also my photoshopped version(s) of Ghostly White Reaper and Ghostly Transparent Reaper cosmetics
    - I also want to put forth a Reaper Robe version:

And how the Death's Door Shield could be re-colored to make a fantastic compliment to Reaper cosmetics:

And finally visual support that Reaper "Red" isn't really red but red-orange:

Reaper cloak shown with Crimson Crest of Wave cosmetic armor, cloak is very clearly orangey compared to the truly red armor.
Blood Scented Axe Body Spray (Thelanis)
    Aelonwy - Wydavir - Metaluscious - Aertimys - Phantastique - Kaelaria - Lunaura - Aelurawynn - Saurscha - Crystalorn - Aurvaeyn - Vaelyns - Wyllowynd

Hum! I hadn't thought of this one, quite an obvious choice now that I think about it. Would be a great long-form one, like Resurrection Chamber.

    *SNIP
I feel like the left-most Reaper armor in White is closest to what we might get. I believe you posted the middle one before in an older mabar thread but I definitely still like it. It has a gauzy or desiccated look to it, very mummy-ish. Eerie!

And I am in agreement that the shield 100% works with the reaper armor and need all the color forms.

I also made this (no editing skills) to go along with the pumpkin hat.

    BUMP.

What about an item called the Spooktacular Spiffinator? Cosmetic Tophat like the one from Carnival, but it's larger and accented with creepy motifs? Like a White Spider on top?

    -- Another Quest Idea:

Spooky Version of 'The Endless Revels' (from The Feywild) called 'The Undead Revels'
    • 1. Map is lousy with raised Satyrs and Fey Beings that corrupt the land.
    • 2. Need to close portals to corrupted wilderness, defeat Evil Unicorns.
    • 3. Have to do 3 actions to ward off dark fey creatures, and in order, similar to actual quest.
    • 4. First, you must clear hordes of undead, then burn incense in several braziers (after getting it from the garden), then you need to clear bone-piles that spawn skeletons (like in Sunrise).
    • 5. DO NOT EAT THE FOOD, OR YOU'LL BE TRAPPED (hold person spell, no save + spawns dark fey).

Most of the existing Night Revels locations are not even slightly spooky. The three locations you chose have the same problem. To me, random jungle, three standard issue ships, and a generic dungeon do not create the right vibe. Of the three, Caged Trolls is the most spooky and has the virtue of being compact.

I personally find dungeons like, oh, Death House or Tomb of the Shadow King a lot more spooky. Unfortunately, those are very large spaces and not linear. I would love to see an Adams Family style Haunted House or a Black Pearl style Ghost ship but I don't think the necessary art assets exist to make them. Rainbow in the Dark has the perfect environment for Night Revels but again, it is very long.

One thing Night Revels really needs is new music, something along the lines of In the Hall of the Mountain King or A Night on Bald Mountain or anything by Berlioz. Music sets the mood for a spooky dungeon. DDO needs more energetic music like the piece from The Temple of Elemental Evil.

We do not have a spider themed Night Revels dungeon. How about filling Rainbow in the Dark with spider webs and pumpkins? Oh. How about sticking a bat inside a pumpkin and making Killer Flying Pumpkins? How about taking a Brown Wood Spider, using a bucket tool to make each brown a shade of gray or black, making it gigantic, giving in the attack sequence of the Giant Crab from White Plume Mountain, and making that an end boss? Every time it charges into a wall, little spiders rain down and attack. The little spiders are like the Sharn Robot Spiders that explode. Hahahhaaha. Itchy, itchy spiders. Dunno.

So, instead of Where There's Smoke, how about using Into the Mists? It is about the same size but already spooky, unlike a patch of jungle. We don't have bargests so... Oh. How about making the end boss a giant Purple Worm with a pumpkin for a head. Yeah! The Great Pumpkin Worm! It can change around and knock people over with Earthquake and spit puke that melts people.

I feel like we also need a Night Revels dungeon with a witch and cauldrons and children peeking out from ovens. I'll have to think on that. Oh! Kobolds peeking out from ovens! Yeah! We have to save the Kobolds from the evil witch!

For loot, I would like to see the Cloak of Night updated to modern standards and a Spectral Greatsword for anti-Reaper work. Yeah. That is not very exciting but I can use what I can use. I have no use for any of that stuff you suggested. Sorry. Do we really need 30% run speed on _another_ item? The 30% Speed, 15% Alacrity Augment is way better. Everything has Run Speed and Deception now. Boots with Freedom of Movement and Immunity to Slippery Surfaces and Rocket Propulsion and Dexterity with an augment slot would be awesome. You could stick Speed in it and get the Alacrity for free.

Changing the color of the stupid Reaper Plate, again, is just so lame. In the Lord of the Rings Online, every festival comes with a dozen new cosmetic items that can be dyed, like, 36 colors. We get the same dumb item 7 years in a row. I mean, go ahead and make a white version or whatever but can we get a new cosmetic item, too? I would like an all black cat suit without any skulls. Actually, why not make a whole series of Halloween style costumes for our characters. Sheet over head ghost costume. Vampire costume is already in the Game Shop. Werewolf costume. Succubus costume. *laughs* The guys will love that one. Fairy costume. Ironman Costume. Just make some costumes.

I am being so darn negative of late. What the heck is up with me? I am sorry, Belgian. I always seem to rain on your ideas. At least you have them. Critics suck.

Just highlighting some rather brilliant ideas.

What if the first one took place in a reverse of Kind of a Big Deal with you starting in a dark ritual circle where we got giant-sized but without being enlarged, and the dungeon is darker and filled with spiderwebs and pumpkin bats and ends with a ghostly version of the giant spider we started off slaying in the aforementioned quest, maybe with some giant-zombie rates for good measure? I do like the idea of the giant-spider raining its babies down on us for extra measure. Could be called A Deal of a Creepy Kind... well I said reversed. Oooh Oooh the boulder trap could be giant pumpkins.

The Great Pumpkin Worm also sounds like a fantastic boss. What about something like Yester Hill with Vine walls instead of lightning culminating in the Great Pumpkin Worm surrounded by a pumpkin patch and mostly those Pumpkin Blights they used in Grave Work. Lots of mists, werewolves, make it night time only with a big orange harvest moon if possible.

SVB's Undead Revels sounds pretty cool maybe we could combine that with the Witches cooking unsavory things in their cauldrons idea. It would be really awesome if we could get just a taste of the Feydark too. Like maybe a hidden entrance into a cavernous area through the Spring House.

An Orb which looks like a dark apple.
"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

How about sticking a spider inside a giant skull head and making jumpy Evil Skull Spiders?

How about taking the head skull character graphic, making it three times as big, and sticking it on the head of every skeleton in a dungeon?

How about making a Great Crossbow that shoots flaming pumpkin bombs that explode on impact for massive area damage?

How about a dungeon full of hanging torture cages like the one in Chains of Flame with the dwarf inside, only now they are full of kobolds? An evil dwarf with a pumpkin head has changed all their heads into pumpkins so we need to free the kobolds and kill the evil dwarf to reverse the spell.

How about a dungeon where kobolds are dressed in costumes and trying to Trick or Treat, but Mabar monsters keep attacking them? We have to run down a street, saving groups of Kobolds from skeletons and zombies and stuff. The end bad guy is a Scrooge type who hates Trick or Treaters. We all know the guy. We get to TP his house.

How about a Magic Apple Bomb consumable that explodes and triggers a powerful sleep spell?

How about I stop starting each stupid sentence with, "How about"?

Make a Yuan-ti invisible, stick seven or eight Pumpkins or Skulls over it, and make a Pumpkin Snake or Skull Snake with the Yuan-Ti animations. They can serve the evil dwarf who is putting Pumpkin Heads on all the kobolds.

How about making a Night Revels Rave inside the House Phiarlan Chapter House? We need to look over all the guests in costume and figure out which ones are actually monsters using the Rave as cover to party in Stormreach. The monsters are all red named bosses and guests cheer us on while we banish or destroy them.

Oh. How about sticking a bunch of Pumpkins or Skulls inside an Air Elemental and making Pumpnados and Skullnados? I used, "How about", again.

Stick a giant Skull on a War Forged Titan and make The Pumpkinator.

This is what happens when I eat ice cream for breakfast. It was chocolate chip.

Thanks! It seems like that one is far and away the most appreciated.

Yes I feel like that one definitely fits the 'vibe' well. Although I still think Jungles can be plenty spooky. And swamps.

Well the thing I was going for was transforming the less spooky into the spooky, those quests are already plenty good for that. Rainbow is cool, but like you mentioned, also very lengthy.

Hmmm, good point. We DO NOT have a spider dungeon. Also the Bat could very well work as a Vargouille w/ Pumpkin Head (Since it's already a head)... and maybe they can make the skull effect larger and put it on the spiders abdomen? Kind of like the Skulltulas from LoZ. I see you mentioned a similar idea in a later post.

I agree heartily with these ideas.

Spooky(er) Version of 'Yester Hill' called 'Pumpkin Hill'
    • 1. The lightning wall is now a thorny root wall, with weak sections that can be burned. The outer glen is now a Hedge Maze with multiple pathways to the center ring.
    • 2. Hidden around the hedges are Living Plant enemies, Scarecrows, Ravens, Hags / Witches, Vargouilles, Bats, Werewolves, Will O' Wisps, and Kama-Wielding Druid Cultists.
    • 3. To clear path to boss, you have to kill 4 Named Shambling Mounds, with Pumpkin Heads.
    • 4. One of the stars requires you take out a mini-boss, a Red Named Werewolf Lord named Lycanus and his Orange Named Wolf Pack.
    • 5. The Boss at the hill center is a Giant Purple Worm with a Green Palette swap and a Pumpkin Head. He counts as an enchanted Plant Monster for DR purposes, and is accompanied by Caster Druids.

You're right, we need a good proper Anti-Witch map. Those hags needs some more comeuppance! I can see 'Undead Revels' being altered to suit that idea more!

I disagree here (Shocking!) but comparing DDO with LoTR never works out because the devs clearly have other things in mind. LoTR also said NO to mini-expansions but it looks like DDO will be getting more of those... and I quite like the Reaper Plate so small changes are fine to me.

That said, we def need more cosmetic choices. I like your Cat-Themed idea. /And the Succubus one/ BUT only if you get an Incubus costume as well. Fair's fair.

    Shucks, that's a good one!

A Poisonous Red Apple Orb for Casters... say, Poison Spellpower + Enchantment / Illusion DCs?
    &
A Poisonous Green Apple for Throwers? Throwing Hammer makes the most sense... but if we call it an Apple SLICE it can be a Throwing Dagger... ie: Venomous Green Apple Slice

I really like that Torture-Dungeon themed quest idea, and the whirlin' pumkin' nados.

It occurs to me that the developers may consider Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, and Ravenloft dungeons out of bounds for Night Revels, an event associated with Eberron.

The Chamber of Insanity and The Lair of Summoning would both provide excellent locations for boss fights with large, Night Revels monsters. They are relatively small dungeons, each with one very large room.

I really like the idea of a pitch black Night Revels dungeon but upon consideration, Rainbow in the Dark is way too long.

I cannot think of a single Eberron quest set in a graveyard. How weird is that?
