Shield Tempest

Okay so next life thinking of using a +1 heart and making a Sun Elf to utilize mace/morning stars and specifically racial dex bonuses to use them in a tempest build that also grants me a huge 2/rest heal clicky , a deathward mass/resistance etc...so to get melee power I see I can take two shield feats...which I thought wasnt a bad idea if I am wand whipping or scroll casting to heal.
Is that a common thing? Do THF users take shield feats for more melee power and defense when trying to heal?
I never really used shields, can you put a wand in a weapon set?
I think this is a pretty boss template actually...
