Default The Borderlands - why so far away!

Have you ever noticed how much travel is required to get to the Borderlands? Why are they so far away from the Stormreach Marketplace? And the city of Sharn?

The Borderlands should definitely be given a centralized location.
FYI, when I summon an earth elemental, it's not a "he," it's a "she." And her name is Pebbles.

The borderlands may or may not be in a different world, akin to how EveningStar is in the Forgotten Relms. Regardless, it's certainly nowhere near the continent of Xendrix!
That's not lag, it's just DDO trying to become turn-based again.

The Keep is in Greyhawk - though it can't be called by name in-game for legal/licensing reasons.

border is the outer edge of something.. It wouldn't be a borderland if it was in a central location..

Why? Are they somehow "central" to the game?

They're right next door to Korthos Island, which is where the only other level 1 quests in the game are located. Why should they be near the Marketplace (level 3-6 quests mostly) or Sharn (level 15-16 quests)?

If you want to get around quickly, use teleport scrolls like everyone else.

I had not noticed because I run them at one of two times.

    1) At level 3, when I am coming and going in the harbor anyway, and the gatekeepers grove is off the harbor. The grove has access to the borderlands, so it is quick.

    2) At level 20-22, when I have access to teleport scrolls on all my characters, and the gatekeepers grove is a choice on the scrolls. (Thank you for adding that, devs!)

With horses, running across market and harbor is very quick. If I am in the market near the harbor entrance, I often don't bother with a teleport scroll. But on the far side of the market, I teleport.

As an aside, I have often wondered what the tolerance of the average player is. I have one guildmate that will teleport/ddoor to save running to anything over about 20 ft, haha. So even if there was a borderlands entrance in the market, there would be a chance that he would use teleport scrolls anyway if the distance inside the grove was shorter!

    You should try LOTRO
Then you will really find out what a lot of travel is.

/follow /afk Make a cup a coffee while my kinmate runs across the zone... (If only DDO had a /follow command like LOTRO I could drive my guildmates insane)

SWTOR has a certain "discovery" place to which one can only travel - if done alone - via a balloon which needs almost an hour for that. I once made spaghetti during that time for myself (at notso high heat, though).
"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

    Default And another thing

You know what else bothers me about the Borderlands? That quest, Total Chaos. The whole thing is so wild and unpredictable. I feel like it should be more orderly.

Oh, and that quest with the minotaur. The layout is so confusing! It's like a maze in there.

The treasury is like a maze? But its tiny.... all but 2 of those quests have very small maps where unless its your first time id think getting lost isnt really possible.

You're seriously underestimating the average MMO player's ability to mess up. Also whoosh.

Modern MMOer's are so spoiled. It used to take half an hour to get anywhere in EQ and we loved it!

I recently setup a P99 Green account for the memories. At level 9 I made an 11 zone naked run to retrieve my corpse when I had gotten a bit frisky around some brigands. It was probably the best hour and a half I have spent in an MMO since 2004 or so. The immersion from travelling in perpetual danger of having to start *all* over again was amazing.

    really nice thread!

what i'd like is to change the quest "violent delights". i mean, it's not really violent, only a bit brawly at the end, it's mostly talking and looking around gnollish stuff and omg reading stuff written by gnolls. the calligraphy must be heinous. work for hardened adventurers. i would support a quest name change, like, "Talkative Rummage". it's fine and brave as it sounds.

They were being sarcastic. Minotaurs are known for living in mazes. Borderlands are known for being out of the way. Jokes are way funnier once you explain them.

My main issue with the boarderlands is how many loading screens it takes to get from your TR stash/airship to the first quest out there. Airship -> harbor -> Gatekeeper's -> Keep -> Boarderlands -> Quest. That's like 5 loading screens in about 1 minute of game time. But after that the quests go quick/easy and no excess load screens unless (forbid) you happen to die or want to leave to level up or something.
