    Question Hello!

I have just about all the races and classes open atm. What is a good starter class/race combo.
What is my fighting style? anything, really. I just want to have fun.

    Thanks for your input!
I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that most, if not all, games are broken to some extent.
One should not complain about them if one cannot fix them.
I, for one, should take this to heart as I embark upon another journey through this game.

Depends on where you want to go, how familiar you are with the game and its quests, and what you would prefer to play.

My favorite starter-friendly class remains Artificer to this day. It's easy to build, does pretty well through heroics even with little game experience.

Ranger is a great option. Recently updated to be much easier to handle (less buttons to click to achieve the same effects), and the class itself was always one of the least dependent on gear around.

If you'd rather go toe to toe with enemies, nothing wrong with a straight up Barbarian. With Blood Tribute as a huge survival boost, they can handle the extra heat that comes from fighting enemies up close.

Want some attempt at magic without having to worry too much about it? Warlocks are right at your doorstep. Eldritch Blast means your damage doesn't depend on managing mana, and the few spells Warlocks DO get access to are all fairly useful.

For the undecided, the best race tends to be Human.

Artificer has the positive side of being able to disarm traps while being able to be randed with the access to crossbows.
The only problem with the Artificer is, that it ain't F2P.

    I agree on Warlock.

However, Paladin is relatively good - imho - in surviving, as this class has access to healing spells as well while being a good fighting type. The class doesn't have any offensive spells (at least I don't recall any), though, everything in this class seems to me to be built for survival, tanking and fighting. Has later on access to important Cleric spells as well, like Resurrection, but gets them at an much slower rate.

But that's only my personal impression. I'm not at all an expert here.

There are several Dragonmarks available. They cost 1 feat, though, but can later be enhanced through Enhancements.

Halfling as F2P, for example, has a Dragonmark of Healing, but the others aren'd bad as well. Look into the Wiki for them. https://ddowiki.com/page/Dragonmark

Human is the most versatile race, I think.

"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

I usually recommend a ranger for first lifers... it gets loads of feats for ranged & melee styles built-in so it's hard to go too far wrong building them, you get a few buffing & curative spells that are helpful but no so many you'll be overwhelmed, with some available in wand form before you have access to them from your spellbook & for ranged style in particular they're more gear independent for dealing with certain enemy defences plus they can switch between being more damage focussed or having some solid crowd control to support a group while keeping your distance from the heavier action.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what's it is weird and scary to me.

Human Paladin two handed fighting works, too if you want to go melee.

I mess around with a lot of classes and races, though I tend to avoid monk because I never understood how to play it properly. I always am having fun on whatever weird build combo I or the forums have come up with, then I go back to Human pure Paladin Two Handed Fighting and am like, WOW. There's just no getting around the fact that it is a very well balanced class, no fiddling around the edges can alter that basic fact.

My advice is to try a bunch and see what you enjoy and then focus on that one character after you figure it out.

I am not very adept at clicking buttons fast so I find I enjoy characters that are simpler. Being a rogue splash combo or an artificer is helpful when soloing as you can disarm traps, but as a newbie, I find that when I am in pickup groups (LFM) people get annoyed with me as they expect me to know where all the traps are, find trap boxes fast, and if I mess up, which happens, they get annoyed, making me feel anxious.

In terms of survivability, warforged and dragonborn have lots of benefits. I really enjoy my dragonborn sorcerer.

If you are going to play a melee character I recommend Paladin.

Favored Souls are an interesting blend of healing and fighting and magic.
