Feather Fall.
However, FF itself doesn't matter - it's the fact that, with 4 AP in Tainted Scholar you can get Feigned Health, which is a boost of Temporary Hit Points to yourself or allies who are affected by any spell you cast. (Also if you use SLA's, scrolls, wands or clickies on yourself.)

FF is a favorite because 1) it's very cheap to cast, 2) it's (semi-) AoE - 1 target/caster level, and 3) requires no materials, and 4) has no cooldown except standard spell-casting limitations.

Other favorites include False Life (self-only), Jump, etc. - anything that you can spam for the temporary hit points.
I have it on a handy hotbar button so I can spam it all day long. In HC, I was following a Barb who was leading the charge with some great DPS, and half the time I was just spamming FF on him to keep his (and mine, and anyone else nearby) Hit Points topped up - worked great.
Also a great life-saver if someone is unconscious - just have to remember that those points only last a couple minutes, so "real" healing is needed at some point sooner than later.
If you aren't doing this for yourself you are not playing a 'lock correctly. If you are not doing this for your group... well, speaks for itself imo, ymmv.
another tip in lower levels is having some form of temp hp. As mentioned Warlock and barbs get blood tribute but for others:
1) aid potions
2) Korthos aid clickies
3) false life scrolls and wands if you can
You do not want to just try to heal your way through because the DoTs can hit hard; while healing chug/click/wand cast all on different cooldowns

Hmmm, do rerolls of the chest make another chance at mimic?
Fire up a second account, have that character follow the group around with a level 2 character that opens all chests. Do that until you hit level 6 or 7 or so and your build has matured enough to handle a mimic.
Get zero mimics.
Kobold sentient jewel still hate you.
Spending 4 points in Harpers Agent to get Travellers Toughness is a standard go-to for me on HC. Playing a Cleric I can get another 15 hp cheaply going Toughness on the Warpriest tree as well.
+30 hp early on is a godsend for sure. Can always respec once your a bit more steady on your feet.
You can always block
"Mimic Slobber (You are taking acid damage from mimic slobber. This damage over time effect can stack with itself if you are licked multiple times, dealing 3d8 acid damage every 2 seconds per application; no known limit on the number of times it can stack, blocking prevents)" - ddo wiki
1. Because you have no money on HCL, and it can be very surprising to players who are used to bouncing against 4.2 million plat constantly what life is really like when you are back to struggling to get over 1000
2. Because most if not all of the chests you target for opening are actually named loot chests, not random. Named loot remains as central to character layout on HCL as on live, and it doesn’t come from end rewards, it comes from chests
3. Some quests are only completed by opening the chest. For example the Miller’s Goods chest, the one with the Goods in it, is mandatory and also subject to mimicking
