Default Game Crashing at Character Screen

I recently got a new PC and the game keeps crashing hard. I was able to load into a world once just long enough to try adjusting the graphics but it still crashed without warning before I could do much. All the other attempts to start it up crashed before I could select a character. I've tried different suggestions like making sure my drivers are up to date and downloading Direct X 9, but nothing is working. It's a solid gaming computer: Element CL Gaming Desktop - Intel i9-10900K - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super 8GB - 1TB SSD; Brand: iBUYPOWER Model Number Element CL996. I had a super old (6+ years) laptop that ran the game fine enough, so I'm not entirely sure why I can't get it to run on a new PC. I even tried running it through Steam, I'll give anything a shot! Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Yeah I tried that and it did not work either. Best i have so far is not getting kicked out of the game, but my graphics card stops working. SO ill have audio and be able to move around, but have a black screen that says no input until I restart my computer.

It may be something funny going on with custom drivers or prebuild control software.

Something else could be to download the recent nvidea driver directly from them, download & run DDU (display driver uninstaller) in safe mode, reboot and then run the gpu drivers.

    Any problems with other games?

DDO can use a LOT of ram, more so then other games. It tends to load in over and above, and then sometimes triggering crashes and hard locks that you wouldn't see other wise. Maybe your ram isn't seated correctly, or the timings are off. Or maybe you just got a bad stick.

Good luck, hope you figure it out.

This happens to me, the creation screen overloads graphics drivers for some reason.

I turn my video settings to very low before entering the character creation screen, that works for me.

I was having a similar problem (for dev bughunters: the little airship appears to do its twirl, then the water begins to flow in the fountain and then everything freezes as the selected character tries to load - with a crash, if I click to go through immediately).

For me, what worked is to let the selected character fully load before heading into the game. It seems as though something's gone wrong with the load-up and my hard drive churns like crazy as it tries to do *something*. It takes about two and a half actual minutes of frozen screen before everything gets free and the character appears on screen. Then I can head into the game and, though distinctly still slower than it was an update or two ago, it gets in and I can play as normal. So, I just leave it to its business and make a cup of tea while I'm waiting.

TL;DR: I can get around the crashing if I let the selected character visibly load up before entering the game. No idea why though!

    Default DirectX redistributables???

Its been a while, but I remember having similar issues and the answer was to install the DirextX redistributables, that are missing from some windows installations.

May not be your issue, but might be worth a try.

You are both absolute heroes. I tried this fix and my game just loaded up as swift and smooth as a gazelle with teflon hooves. Thank you both for stopping by and suggesting it. OP, try this solution!

EDIT: Thought I should come back to say that this didn't, in the end, fix my problems. The first time after loading the DX redist, it loaded super-swiftly and let me in fine (upon which, I quit out and came here to write the above!), but subsequent times it's gone back to the same problem.

Sequence of events: On the loading screen, the character does not appear. A little airship appears top-left. The base of the fountain bubbles and then the water flows down. The little airship turns back the way it came and stops, veiled by palm fronds, prow half-way across the roof of the furthest tower to the left. The game freezes up for about two minutes before the character finally appears.

As I said before, if I wait and the character is allowed to load up fully, then the game doesn't crash and I can get in. Does feel a bit like loading up a game on a ZX Spectrum at the moment though...

    Default Having the same issue

We are having the same problem. For me I can usually get on after the freeze but on my wifes laptop, she gets message connection to server has been lost. She can get on maybe 1 in 10 tries and shes pretty upset since we both pay for vip. (for dev bughunters: the little airship appears to do its twirl, then the water begins to flow in the fountain and then everything freezes as the selected character tries to load - with a crash, if I click to go through immediately).

Did you try some of the suggestions here?

    Cheers,
