So apparently there's friendly Mind Flayer NPC just chilling and trying to run an honest business near a garden in Stormreach. And his name is Fred. I think this pretty well demolishes any argument that Mind Flayers shouldn't be a playable race.

I thought that before I ever even met him. Mind Flayers are just friendly and I'm sure that I made my saving throw when I spoke to him. ...at least that's what I remember happening. I find the memories around that time kind of fuzzy for some reason.

He also appears within the very first quest of the Disciples Of Rage quest - and whereas he shows that he is powerful, he also shows that he is friendly there, too.
And about his name ... He explains it."You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"
