Well, the obvious way - if you reduce your threat gen and you start losing aggro, then you need it.

Besides, even if it gave you a metric, how would you know how much is "enough"? You'd still have to subjectively determine what number corresponded with losing aggro when playing with a particular group. And you already know your threat gen %, so ultimately you'd just be calibrating a redundant metric to that.

Some melee might wear items that generate threat like the Nocturne Ring in order to get a 4-Winter HP bonus.

Maybe a paladin accidentally activated Divine Righteousness or left their stance activated.

Fury hits or boost activations can cause a sudden aggro re-evaluation due to high spike damage.

There's also legitimate gear swap decisions due to some items having quality hate at the cost of more desirable affixes.
(Feargaze vs Orator, any number of shields vs Vengeful Calamity, etc)

Try figuring out who you lost to and why on the fly...really hard without instrumentation.

Being a high DPS and not knowing how much you need to throttle back...also problematic.

The + tab isn't the most accurate tool in the game and doesn't give the entire picture.

Even other games that refuse to use meters like FF14 at least have a basic red/yellow/green threat indicator.
