So I've recently returned to the game and I'm still getting my footing. I've logged into my crafter and it seems that all my shards are useless now? I have, for example, Bound Shard of Potential (+15) or Health +5 Flexible Shard...I cant find an alter that will accept them. Is there a place to replace or sacrifice them or are they complete trash now?

Yeah, those shards are useless now. You can convert old essences to the new and unique Cannith Essence to the trader in the crafting hall though!

Some of the old shards are able to be deconstructed into essences, but many are not. Just try'em. If you can't decon them, then, yes, they are useless.

Shards from the old system had a short(ish) window where they could be de-con'd, but, yeah, most (if not all?) are now trash.
As for your old characters, the good news is that, given how long you've been gone, you'll find a +20 Heart of Wood in each of your old characters, along with the standard +0 HoW that all characters now get on generation.* So, re-building an old build is easy. Originally Posted by Psyk0sisS

Otoh, leveling is MUCH easier now too, so, even with a flawed build, getting to 20 (and then just TR'ing) is no longer a significant obstacle.
As for finding your footing, I might suggest this thread:
Not all are still considered "current", but few are so old to be obsolete. At worst, a tree may have been reworked to require a new Action Point split (the points that go into those trees now) - to be sure, post your chosen build(s) (or link) as see what the gurus have to say about any current status/improvements/alternatives.
