Default How to make a hireling guard another player

Hi. From the way I understand it, select another player, hit shield on the hot bar and it makes the hireling protect them. I seem to recall trying this and nothing happens. Assuming I can get this working, will the hireling still protect if you die or do they remain by your stone? Thanks

It works for the most part, in that they'll follow who you designate rather than you. Now as to whether or not they do anything useful for the other guy...

Are you sure you're hitting the right button though? There's the big shield that puts them in defensive mode, and then the OTHER shield to the left of it that sets them to guard someone else.

I've had this work fine, but there are limits, and it's never 100% guaranteed.

I always first make the Hireling "Active", and make sure they're not parked/locked in place. That seems to start it off fine every time.

They'll follow their assigned target quite a ways, but sometimes pathing will prevent them from following, especially if it's a big 3-dimensional shift or broken terrain with a lot of places to get "stuck". And any portal will always cause them to break contact.
