Default Melt Lock spell not WAI

On my Alchemist I try to use melt lock but it is useless in upper level content. It says DC is d20+spellcraft skill however, my spell craft is 92 but my bonus to melt lock on the little die is +65. Is description off?

Hasn't worked correctly since alchemist came out. It goes off your Int modifier + spell caster level or something like that.

Yeah, it's been broken since the start.

Did a little testing and the closest thing I can find it tied to is the repair skill as it has the same value like when I took off an int item the value matched repair still. There's still a discrepancy though, I made a repair item and my repair skill went to 80ish but the dc for melt lock stayed the same. Maybe it's using the formula for repair skill but not including the item bonus to the skill?

I think rn it's just going off of your caster level, like knock does.

Melt lock says d20 + spellcraft, but it functions identically to the Knock spell. d20+ caster level + int mod. Yeah totally useless garbage dc that will unlock nothing unless you have ridiculous int or sources for lots of caster levels.

If you are playing an Alchemist, then why wouldn’t you have ridiculous int and caster levels?

They do. The point is that they STILL can't open locks.

I mean they could be missing gear, and you can get 6 int from past lives and 5 from reaper points so if you're missing all that, 11 int you literally cannot have that someone else might. Sentient xp included in gear imo.

Pretty sure you need 120+ int and all the extra caster levels you can get to actually open anything tho so hard for most ppl to do

I have generic heroic Sharn gear and a cannith crafted cha/Insightful cha ml 21 item up until level 28 on my Sorcerer and I don’t have any trouble opening locks. No raid gear or anything fancy and I don’t have racial completionist and I’m opening locks just fine. Uses the same formula as Alchemists and Alchemists have better Int than Sorcerers have Cha.

Sometimes you have to cast it a few times to get a high enough for roll but that isn’t a big deal. Turn quicken off so you don’t accidentally spend SP that you don’t need to spend.

There are two locks I can’t do with my Sorcerer. 1 is the one slave pen in the Drow quests and the other is the door to the necromancer end fight in the drow quests. The slave pen you can bash open and have a small fight and the necromancer end fight I just use a bell of opening - one bell per life isn’t a lot.

Which locks and what is your Open Lock skill with the spell on your specific character? I can probably help you hit a reasonable number.

Just curious, did you not mention legendary because the lock dcs don't drastically increase while your cha mod does or because you don't play leg? Reason I ask is I feel like last time I played a warlock (I was GOO), I still couldn't open locks too effectively. Running EA, so less caster levels probably (assuming destiny affects knock caster level), but did have just over 100 cha. Might not be remembering that right tho, maybe I just didn't try opening many locks. Not sure what sort of a dc increase can be seen from quests used to level in epics to legendary quests.

I didn’t mention legendary because so many things are a cakewalk once you get your level 29 gear And there aren’t a lot of locks to unlock in level 29+ quests.

I did make a Cannith crafted Search trinket (search + insightful search + Int for lives when I don’t have Int) because There are some secret doors I want to find in Legendary quests. Locks aren’t really a problem, though.

I’ll admit that I haven’t done any locks in R-10 legendary content because the R-10 PUGs that I join are ones that don’t happen to have locked stuff to deal with. I didn’t know if more skulls = harder locks or not. I don’t do more than R2 on my own.

Yeah maybe I don't remember being able to open locks because there weren't any to open, it's possible lol.

afaik skulls don't affect it but I don't have any confirmation/evidence one way or the other

Reaper mode does not increase: Disable Device, Secret Door or Open Lock, requirements.

The quest 'Tharashk Arena' (Epic) has a door, with one of the highest Lock DCs in Epic about 2 DC lower than the lock in 'To Curse the Sky' (Epic). Albeit most Lock DCs tend to be rather low in general. Unless a Developer specifically chooses to adjust a specific: Lock DC. For example: an Optional or wanting a certain door to be extra difficult to bypass without an obtainable key.

For 'The House of Death Undone' on Elite, Locked door to Ritual Chamber is between DC: 80-87, that's purposely high as you can just "skip" a lot of the quest if you unlock it without a key... The Slave pen within 'The House of Broken Chains' has one outlier; Dual slave pen door, North, which likely has a Open Lock DC of 90 so both are major outliers.
