A simple way to implement the spell Mirror Image for all arcane casters to have access to a level 2 spell that adds a buff to your buff list with a count of the illusionary self you have (a buff similar in appearance, the buff's 'look' - to the EK tier 4 Striking Shield that grants eldritch shield). You could do 1 illusion per 5 levels, or something like that, up to level 20. So a lvl 20 wizard would have 4 mirrors of herself.
If the monster cannot see through the illusion it must roll to determine if their attack was on the caster or an illusion - if an illusion is hit, the number on the buff bar is reduced by one. Where that roll comes in is up to the devs - before dodge, after dodge, before concealment, after concealment - I'm sure there is something in the core rules about it. There is no visual addition to the game that needs to be added, mirrors, etc, though it would be nice - but likely overly complicated - which is why my idea is simple - it can all be done with a buff and dice rolls behind the scenes. the spell ends after a set amount of time or after all the illusions are pierced and destroyed.
Mirror Image is an iconic Dungeons and Dragons spell that has been around since the early days - Gygax's 1970s - it would be a fantastic addition to DDO considering DDO's place in Dungeons and Dragons history.
Mirror Image
2nd-level illusion
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Illusory duplicates of yourself appear in your space. Until the spell ends, the duplicates move with you and mimic your actions, shifting position so it’s impossible to track which image is real. You can use your action to dismiss the illusory duplicates. Each time a creature targets you with an attack during the spell’s duration, roll a d20 to determine whether the attack instead targets one of your duplicates. If an attack hits a duplicate, the duplicate is destroyed. A duplicate can be destroyed only by an attack that hits it. It ignores all other damage and effects. A creature is unaffected by this spell if it cannot see, if it relies on senses other than sight, such as blindsight, or if it can perceive illusions as false, such as with truesight.
