    Default Brainstorming a "hide" build

When it comes to hide, sneaking I think of 3 classes:
    - rogue assassin
    - monk ninja spy
    - ranger deepwood stalker

a combination of 2 of those would probably work well.
Monk offers much however in order to work well it needs many monk levels

assassin and deepwood stalker seem to be 2 sides of the same coin, both have "killer", idk if they stack.
an assassin wears light armor, a monk wears.. robes

    Races
    - halfling
    comes to mind

The idea is, evade fights, sneak - and quickly - through dungeons. But have kaboom for bosses.

Weapon Kukri, assassin and ninja would work well but in robes so spike dodge
The question is, have 2 rogue levels and 12 ranger 6 monk, or 12 monk 6 ranger?
11 levels of ranger = greater twf
    6 ranger = improved twf
    9 monk = improved evasion
    13 monk = diamond soul

That's all I've got for now, tired

Player Character Stealth is borked right now - I've never tried one much above Stealthy Repossession, but I read/hear lots of complaints at higher level Heroics, and certainly Epic. Someone will drop by and explain why Hide is not the way to go. I do know that one way it fails is that many Champs and Reapers have no-fail Spot rolls.

Otoh, I hear that Invis is useless, and I know for a fact that's just not the case, so... not sure where that leaves us.

re "Killer" - Usually, enhancements by the same name do not stack. Can't say for sure, that's the general rule.

    Hey Urklie,

as C-Dog pointed out sneak/hide play is borked for some time now. And so there are not many up-to-date builds around.

But check out Saekee's wiki page: https://ddowiki.com/page/User:Saekee He lists some nice pages that might help, some builds among other things.

    Cheers,
    Titus.

This is usually something posted by people who use an invis spell/potion/clicky and have no move silent skill. While the mobs can't see you, they can hear/locate you (if you're running in a suit of platemail I will hear you even if I can't see you). However, stealth is, and has been for a while, a mess.

Update 45 made some stealth changes. The good news is monster detection radius was reduced; the bad news is the stealth movement speed bonuses were nerfed and no longer stack. So you've lost the big incentive for heavy multi-classing a stealth build.

Stealth has been effectively useless in Reapers for a long time and since Reapers is the only thing the community apparently cares about, nobody builds around stealth anymore, AFAICT. OTOH if you just want to solo non-Reapers, you could probably make it work.

I'll add that I remembered using Stealth to farm the Silver Slinger chest in Servants of the Overlord, a Level 16 quest, so it works there.

I'm thinking that one complaint has been that stealthy characters cannot currently stealth in combat to assassinate target after target in a chaotic melee - iirc?

Stealth does certainly work there but many people associate invisibility with stealth and vice-versa. Stealth is both hiding and being quiet. Invisibility is simply hiding. If you move, mobs might just hear you

However, having mobs from another room know where you are without ever having a line of sight on you before you go back into stealth is wrong.

Many newer quests tend to require you to kill mobs to progress to and open doors, etc.

Spot distance was never the problem with Rogue Stealth play: Post Reaper mode, anyway. It's faulty chain reaction aggravation that's the problem, not spot proximity. Any Assassin worth their salt with trash gear can easily approach a generic mob to Assassinate and not get detected and Spot range was never the main issue with the current faulty stealth mechanics (from the players perspective).

I do prefer to silently neutralise and thin out certain targets due to the current malfunctioning chain reaction aggravation.

I can inform you it's not generally a 25 or 18 metre distance that's a problem with potentially being detected. It's trivial to get much closer and not be noticed.

It took several years and not until [U45.2], before there was any further DDO Developer response to any Assassin enthusiast, with regards to honest questions about using; Sneak or Stealth, etc. It happened to be me that got the first response (we're talking about 3 years of total silence from SSG up until that post). Refer to: [Post #90]. :-)

If you read Torc's response you'll realise that they still have major problems with the (mis)behaviour of mobs and the faulty aggravation system.

If you, drop into Sneak with a generic level appropriate Rogue and visit the Level 6 F2P quest: The Forgotten Caverns. Observe what the swimming Orche Jelly usually does, and which mob it 'specifically' sends a message to, and thus also aggravates. If you don't already notice things like that then you probably aren't into stealthy play style.

I exclusively play Assassins when at Epic and the majority of the time I'll solo them.

I'm not really into the hardcore "minimum kill discreet stealth runs" I tend to clear all the mobs rather than leave them living. I just rolled a 'default path' throwaway first life Rogue to prove you didn't need a specialised build, when doing several of the Stealth Challenges. R.O.G.U.E Part Quatre: Call for Stealthy Players!, see [Post #375]. There are some very good videos in that thread but its mainly for showcasing Rogues that try to avoid all unnecessary combat. :-)

Sneaking past mobs to avoid combat and Stealth play are two totally different concepts; any fool can avoid being detected by mobs if they are only travelling from point: A to B to avoid combat. Whereas proper Stealth play takes time and patience.

Good points D, thx for being a voice of experience.

While this is true, it's also possibly misleading - Invisibility actually can be either better than or worse than Hiding, depending on what you're trying to avoid.

Most(!) mobs have a Spot roll - Invisibility will always beat that, 100% of the time. Dropping back down the shaft in Coalescence Chamber w/ Invisibility is wonderful - no mobs spot you, no DA, all good.

Note that that doesn't mean they won't hear you if you are not Moving Silently, but they won't Spot you.

However, some mobs have True Seeing, and that simply ignores Invisibility. And by "some" I mean "enough that you should not rely on it". More than just Champs and Reapers.

(And of course then there are mobs w/ Tremor-sense (like spiders and oozes, among others), who can detect anyone who walks nearby, regardless. Those you just have to keep your distance, and/or run past.)

I made a Rogue multi-class build that had only Move Silently and an Invis clickie - not b/c I thought it would work 100%, but b/c I had the clickie and the build didn't have enough Skill Points for both MS & Hide. And, predictably, sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't, which for me was enough, better than nothing.

Just so everyone is clear on that point.

This is some excellent feedback, thank you.
It was aimed at the hardcore server, the idea was simply, why make a powerful build and waste time fighting enemies when you can just evade them and only fight those who are part of the quest objective.

bad news about the stealth boni not stacking
good news that I don't have to try and fit 3 classes into 1 build

That still makes me think since you've been essentially been waving the herring around my nose, some wizard, sorc, bard or warlock levels for invisibility
Wiki says invisibility is spot immunity if outside 2m range of mob, while hiding/stealth does not make you immune to spot.

However Monk Ninja Spy gets invisibility at Monk 6 and 10+1 AP, take unabalancing strike for steak attack vulnearability = 12ap, leaves us 68ap.
    Vistani Knife Fighter 41AP
Why Vistani? Because I bought it today
But it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. It will probably perform quite alright but I feel like I'm trying to fit something cinderella style.

The Deflect Arrows at 10, because there was nothing better to pick, and I'd like to have spring attack asap for jumping over traps.
4 ranger levels early for jump
Since there is no rogue in it anymore, I did away with it for 9 monk and improved evasion, which also relaxed the need for 16 INT.
Ninja Spy: Flash Bang 3 is nice to have, but so is DWS: Killer 3
I opted for Killer because my 14 Monk currently feels a bit weak in the DPS department and relies of WW-Attack which is on a short cd, but has a cooldown.
Why would one pick Ranger? For the free TWF feats. But when you have the DEX why pick Ranger?
This build would probably work okish, however I'm thinking about a WIS based Ranger Monk hybrid with Falconry.

This Falconer Ninja is really weak on the defensive side.
The question was either go full ranger or 17 ranger/3 rogue, 17 ranger - hide in plain sight, apparently an invisibility spell equivalent.
full ranger 6 AP, actually 3 AP wasted for the pre-requisite for improved evasion in Tempest
The result was similar to this Falconer Ninja, low RR, and then there's the question why spike WIS at all and no go just pure Tempest/DWS, mix in some rogue and there's your Tempest Trapmonkey™.

And the problem with this build, you're not a full monk ninja so you can't just Touch of Death because you're lacking Monk levels.
So Falconer it is and we go all in into Falconer (well almost, we didn't grab the good stuff™ - action boost sprint which could theoretically let us run away, out of detection range and stealth).
Since we don't have much RR, we rely on blinding enemies.
Which weapons? Short swords I guess, since it seems to be the only option to not become uncentered.

I'm not sure about stunning fist working with short swords. If not I guess replace it with improved trip, you need some tools to take out dangerous casters quickly (you have unbalancing strike already, so toughness might also be an option, those cyclone spitting hounds like to instakill low hp chars).

Falconer looks like it's really high dps and burstable with AOE capability.
Instead of Falconry: Tear Flesh one could put 1 point in Henshin Mystic for the 3 Melee Power and 3 PRR
Idk if you need Sting of the Ninja in order for Deadly Exploits to work, if yes we get rid of Deadly Exploits and put them in Way of the patient turtle and action boost sprint
    Ocean stance always.

If you feel safer with Improved Evasion at level 9 rather than 11 go Monk 9 first.

Shadow Walk can help getting you past mobs in Stealth a bit faster?

It's a little faster, but the mobs still see you (unless you add Invis or Stealth to the mix), so you're not avoiding DA w/ that alone - and you take only 50% damage if any attack lands. But more, the graphics make it so unless you know the quest or there are clear landmarks (like a single halll, etc.), you can get disoriented and make a wrong turn very easily. It also drops if you have to open a door/throw a lever/turn a valve/etc.

1 level of Wiz gets you a 1 AP Invis SLA, plus the Wiz 1 metamagic feat*, plus 3 QoL spells - typically Shield, Jump +10, and your choice of {Prot from Evil, Obscuring Mist, Summon Monster 1}, plus 100% use of Level 1 & 2 arcane wands. (Remember this is a Wiz, so spell swapping is as tough as visiting your local tavern.)

    * Augment Summoning for the dog chew-toy (which makes a surprisingly effective distraction even into Epics), or either Quicken or Maximize if you have a Healer (Halfling Cure SLA's maximized are extra nice), or Extend for buffs.
