Default Launcher Error - "Unable to decrypt & de-serialize the data..."

    Hello all,

I'm a returning player and am currently getting this error message at the launcher, right when it seems like the update is about complete.
"Unable to decrypt & de-serialize the data downloaded from the server"

I've literally uninstalled DDO completely and re-installed it from scratch, and still getting this same error.
I'm running Windows 10 Home, no changes at all to the environment, so not sure where else to go.
A quick search on Google hasn't helped either

    Any thoughts??

I am having the same issue, I have tried the steam version and the non steam version, tried reppairing and deleting various .dat files and redownloading them. Tried wthout A/V
patching also with no success. And have tried various possible DDO and LOTRO solutions from google searching the issue.

Ask Microsoft. They regularly BEEEEEP home users with their forced Home Edition updates - did you know that paying companies can withhold updates for months ? Until the de facto beta testing through home users is over ?
"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

Actually Home Edition updates can be paused for up to 35 days and the testing is done by Windows Insiders who receive major updates (ie version changes) before the general user.

Sounds like it is a corrupt *.dat file. Are you using hi-res or standard? If you do try another uninstall/re-install, make sure you remove any leftover traces from the uninstal. Delete install folder as well as the DDO folder in the Documents folder. Sometimes downloaded files are kept in temp folders until successfully installed and these folders are often not deleted by uninstall procedures..

I've removed AV, uninstalled/reinstalled to no avail.
I looked at the links above, but couldnt really do anything with them.

I havent tried deleting the install folder AFTER the uninstall OR deleting the documents folder OR deleting the temp folder.
Will do those three and report back!

    Thanks for all the tips!

Also, if you have it and are comfortable with it, try running some sort of cleanup software that is reputable (don't want to recommend any but some are very useful) and looks for junk files, registry errors, and the like. If no luck, post again. Hope it helps

    Well im really struggling now

To recap i've done the following...

    - Re-installed DDO several times
    - Deleted the install folder AFTER uninstalling
    - Deleted the contents of the temp folder
    - Removed A/V
    - Deleted the Documents Folder

They all end up with the same launcher error

Im not sure how comfortable i am running some sort of registry cleaning tool.

    Any other suggestions?

Have you been rebooting your PC after doing one of the suggested steps?

Make sure you empty the Recycle Bin.

Try installing in a different location. Try something like C:\Games\DDO

Try doing a DNS flush. Open command prompt (start menu, search for cmd) input "ipconfig /flushdns" ( without the " "). This is not likely to work but it can't hurt.

Try unplugging both the router and the cable modem, waiting a few mins, then plug them back in. You never know, it might work.

    Hey all,

    So i tried this...

    - Unplugging modem/roter
    - Uninstalled, deleted all references to DDO and emptied recycle bin.
    - Rebooted
    - Did the DNS Flush thing
    - I also went into the Windows registry and removed all reference to "dndclient"
    - Re-installed onto a different path

Maybe good news? I'm now getting a different error message.
I think the installer is close to the end.
But it lists that it is "downloading file x of 8000'ish".
Right now, it is downloading somewhere between 5-10 of these, and then fails.
I get either 'Unknown Error: E_Fail" OR "Unknown Error <a bunch of random numbers and letters>"

The 8000 number is actually counting down though (i'm down to 3000), but still no guarantee that when it does get to zero, it will work!

    Any other thoughts???
Thanks again for all the support here, i do appreciate it.

    *EDIT*

So it kept on downloading bit by bit, counted down to around 1500... and then the original error message as per the subject came up again.
    Im back to square one

Try posting your most recent PatchClient.log file %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Dungeons and Dragons Online

Try using the CleanUninstall.exe in your DDO install folder instead of the windows uninstall programs option.
    Then:
Delete any remaining DDO files/folders from install location and in %UserProfile%\Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online folder.

Delete the %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Turbine and %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Dungeons and Dragons Online (windows key + r and type in %UserProfile%\AppData\Local then look to see if you have either of these folders). There may also be other versions of the Turbine/Dungeons and Dragons Online folders in %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86), so check there as well.

    Reinstall by downloading the in
    staller fresh from DDO.com

Might also want to try switching between standard/high resolution files before install.

    Hello,

    I've now tried...

    - The CleanUninstall
    - All recommendations above around removing references to DDO & Turbine
    - Re-installed with a fresh installer download

    But having the same issue

With regards to the log file, i cant see how i can attach it here?
If i just copy/paste it, the post would be huge.

Not sure what to do next

What's the date and time set to on your computer? Meaning, is it correct? Do you have anything else at all running on the computer while you try to download? Browsers, torrent clients, messengers, etc. Is there another machine/tv/console in the house hogging all the bandwidth for your internet connection?

Edit: Is there any way at all you could try a different connection to the internet? Like a friends house, or free wifi at library, etc?

Simply upload the file to a cloud based site and post a link to it, or just post the end of the file (under the last **************** line, that is where the error(s) should show up).

Good point, I forgot about that issue. Make sure those are correct.

Other that the above suggestions, not sure yet what else to try. It's a PitA to try and troubleshoot this issue. There have been so many 'solutins' that worked for some but not others.

Keep posting your status and I, and I'm sure others, will continue to try and help. You may want to try and post a bug report *cringe*. SSG Bug Reporting. Select 'I need assistance on technical issues' in the first box and put a link (just cut and past the address for this forum topic) to this discussion in the 'Description' box on the next page.

Another option just popped into my mind... Copy all the files/folders (should only need those from the install folder, I think?) from a friend's install to a thumb drive and replace yours with theirs. Not to worry, login but NOT password is included in those files.

    Hello all,

    Further attempts made!!!...

    - Date/Time on PC is normal, no strange setup
    - Every time i've installed it i've had nothing open or running in the background. No downloads/torrents/youtube etc
    - Tried on a different internet connection, no difference
    - I noticed there were two steps on this thread https://www.ddo.com/forums/showthrea...6-Update-error
I tried both of them (Changing the patching download rate by pressing the little carrot thing, AND downloading the DDO Wrapper one user had made). Both sadly did not work

Is it best to log something with SSG directly? (i understand the likelihood of them fixing this is nil.... i wouldnt expect them to troubleshoot an environmental issue)

    --------

Also, here is the last bit of the log file that references an error...

    "000000214.979: downloading file <client_map_1.dat-37361> to <C:\Games\DDO\forward/client_map_1.dat-37361>
000000215.394: Download failed: error 0x80043038. No alternate URLs. Sorry.

000000215.394: Download failed: error 0x80043038. No alternate URLs. Sorry.
000000215.394: Data patching failed with error 0x80043038

    More random stuff to try:

    1. Hosts file, google it and check it for akamai.ddo.com
    2. Do you have a proxy server connection to the internet?
    3. Whats your default web browser?
    4. Anything special going in with your internet/windows settings? Special DNS resolver, routing everything through a proxy, etc.
    4. Can you ping akamia.ddo.com? If you paste that url in the log into a webbrowser, does it immediately download that file?
    5. Yes theres two number fours. Do you have anything set for your ip4 dns versus ip6 dns settings anywhere?
    6. Is it possible to "skip" any router or home wifi thing, and directly connect to the internet by plugging your computer into for example an ISP provided cable modem?

My latest thoughts are that this error is caused by one of, both of, or either of two things: 1. DNS propagation errors for akamai.ddo.com, and 2. akamai.ddo.com throttling/overloading on their end, maybe because of a greater number of players lately or DDO not paying akamai the higher fees, better tier distribution plan etc.

It does seem to be more likely something on the Akamai side, so it might be that nothing you do will work and you just have to keep trying.

Even though you think you may have stopped all other programs (ie firewall, AV, etc) there are still going to be those that you won't be able to find unless you go into services and basically stop everything that isn't Microsoft. I would NOT recommend this unless you are comfortable with meddling with your OS. However, I did think of 2 other things to try...

    1) Try installing/patching after booting into Safe mode with networking.

    2) Try using the SFC and DISM tools in Windows. You can find info on the Windows site but I find the steps given here to be clearer/easier to follow for most people. Even though it tells how to run DISM first, I would run SFC first.

Good luck Let me know how it goes.

Edit - Just so you have an idea of what I am suggesting, SFC is 'System File Checker' and DISM is 'Deployment Image Servicing and Management'. They are tools in Windows designed to check and repair system files that may be damaged/corrupt. Often times these issues will only show up when doing a specific thing or running a specific program, so it's worth a shot. Don't worry, they are both easy to use and shouldn't take more than 10-20 minutes.

    Hey Mindos,

Just before I get to all your points here, and the subsequent post from Buddha...

I tried to visit akamai.ddo.com on my browser (Google Chrome), and i got a blank white page with "Not Found" on the top left hand corner.
I'll assume its not meant to be doing that!
Does this give us a better indication of whats wrong and where to go to next?
