Default DDOWiki timing out (for me only, apparently)

Like the title says... starting Friday eve, almost 24 hours ago. Others say Wiki is working fine for them (source).

I can access all other sites I've tried. ISP is AT&T, they say they have no outages/problems.

Checked TCP/IP, all proper. Tried 3 diff browsers - started w/ Firefox, no good on Chrome or Edge either. All can browse, all time out on DDOWiki (only, apparently).

For a while I was just getting this text:

    Server: ip-172-31-15-232

Got around that - still timing out.

Checked w/ AT&T techsupport (), they say it's "third party", implying it's on the Wiki end.

    Suggestions?

It's very odd that this started suddenly and just last night. Dunno what to make of that.

Have you tried clearing out your DNS cache?

If you don't know how to do that, bring up a Command line (DOS box/screen). Type the following: ipconfig /flushdns

    Good luck.

Tried that (thx), tried clearing cookies, did a cold restart of computer - no joy. :/

Can browse anything else I can think of.

I did get a "security warning" once b/c the site's certificates were expired, but I made that an exception (I think?).

Can you post a screenshot of that error message you get that gives you that 172.31.x.x ip address?

    I'm really intrigued by that.

No, but that was 100% of what it said - white browser page with that text at the far left top - nothing else.

(If I can duplicate it I will)

    I'm formulating a hypothesis.

There are two IP addresses listed in DNS for ddowiki.com:

    3.18.78.249
    3.20.108.128

Copy and paste each of these (one at a time) in your web browser's address space. Then hit your Enter key.

Let me know the results of each attempt.

I get an identical and absolutely nul result for both of them. No browser activity, no timing out, nada.

If I paste 198.252.160.57 I get (after "accepting the risk" of an unsecured site) DDO.com.

(Edit - I can do a tracert on www.ddowiki.com, and get 3.18.78.249. However, Ping'ing that addy times out.)

    Strange.

I'm not surprised your ping wasn't returned. Many firewalls will pass Port 443 traffic on through the firewall to the webserver and block things like ping requests. For some reason, it seems like HTTPS requests like yours are getting blocked or the requested data (ddowiki.com) just isn't being returned to you specifically.

Let me think about this for a bit.

    I appreciate any help, thanks!

(I tried ping'ing a couple other sites - they, too, timed out.)

Currently the DDO Wiki is functional. You've already tried different Web Browsers (cleared ALL History, cache, cookies) and rebooted your Router I presume. Plus you'll have also checked your antivirus isn't blocking connections, and that your system date and time is correct. It might be worth using; Clear SSL state. Since you mentioned you were fiddling with settings relational to an expired SSL Certificate.

Do both HTTP and HTTPS versions of sites respond the same regarding "timing out" when you try accessing them?

I had not rebooted my router - will do that in a moment. However...

An "interesting" thing happened when I logged on this morning.

Tried DDOWiki, and this time got the "Accept the risk and continue?" warning for a site that is not secure. Went ahead... and got this website:

o https://www.shulph.com/ (tracert for that url yields 18.218.73.222)

However, the url in the address bar still reads "https://ddowiki.com/".

So there is some sort of redirect going on. The site ~seems~ legit - not ransomware or otherwise something that one would expect from an intentional hijack.

Off to reboot my router (and full system w/ that).

First, make no changes. Second, change devices, but use the same everything, connection, etc. Isolate your problem. Is it just the computer, or is it just your internet connection? Third, use your phone, does it work now? Is your phone on your internet connections wifi, etc? Now try your phone with wi-fi off, i.e., use your phone providers network to see if it works...

traceroutes, pings, different browsers, turning off ALL other running programs, safe mode for the OS if you can, etc.

    You have work to do.

I can connect to the Wiki via my phone when attached to the same (wireless) network (my computer is cabled in). So, that sounds like my router/ISP are good (right?).

(I have no (working) 2nd computer.)

When experimentally "surfing" the various tabs of the Shulf site (see post, above), the url changes to "https://ddowiki.com/support", "https://ddowiki.com/books", "https://ddowiki.com/downloads", etc.

On the Shulf log-in page, which reads "https://ddowiki.com/log-in", it has auto-filled my default DDOWiki login data.

Something clearly seems to have jumped the tracks on my computer. But knowing how to fix it is beyond my PC-fu.

(And I have never heard of Shulf before, so never (to my knowledge) visited that page. Nor is it something I would have ever been interested in previously.)

What IP address do you get for the DDOwiki when you open a command prompt and ping ddowiki.com?

Did you, by any chance, edit your PC's "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" file at some point in the past? It's also possible your hosts file has been edited by some malware. Take a look.

I have never had any problems. Only in a few cases I had to wait a little bit longer than usual. I'm using ye olde Internet Explorer, or Vivaldi.

I could imagine an certificate problem. Maybe the browsers you use are too new.

"You are a Tiefling. And a Cleric, with the Domain of the Sun. Doesn't that contradict each other ?" "No, all my friends are playing evil. I found that so boring that I decided to be on the good side. And, besides, Sun and Fire, where is the difference, really ?"

Friday afternoon I was surfing DDOWiki just fine, sometime early evening (Pacific) it simply started giving me the finger, done. Haven't dove into anything in months (maybe seasons), certainly not any system files.

It was only this morning (some 12+ hours later, and after a night shut off) that Shulf showed up.

Inititally couldn't find any \etc under \drivers (went from \errdev to \evbda). Did a Search for any file called "hosts" and it popped up, exactly where expected. (Needed to "show hidden files"???)

    Anyway, once there...

Only the default "# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows...". 100% of the lines there are #'d out to comments-only.

The Shulf thing is very strange. The next thing I'd do is Google to see if anyone else has experienced something similar with Shulf or any other similar sites.

    That's all I've got. Sorry I wasn't more helpful.
