Aww, only level 3 hireling. My on level healers die enough as it is, level 3 would be almost useless past level 7 or so.

I think the OP was referring to the quest pack, not the extra bundle. They talked about getting it for mounts and sentient weapons.

The bundle is definitely not worth it for a new player.

As a takealong healer yes. But you can call Gold Seal hires anywhere in a dungeon, and you can recall them 5 mins after you dismiss them. And Elieri (the L3 permanent GS cleric hire in the Starter Pack) is able to restore spellpoints as well as hitpoints. So in effect she's a permanent mini-rest shrine...any time you're safe from monsters for the moment, you can call her, have her heal you up and give you some extra SP (she can restore ~100-200 per rest), and then dismiss her and be able to call her again in 5 mins. Its useful pretty much through Heroic, whenever you find yourself stretched a little thin or want to top off before a boss fight, though by Epic she's doing too little compared to your HP/SP pools to make it worthwhile.

Also Elieri+Byron Scoutsword is pretty much the next best thing to Vet 4 status You can pretty much just cruise behind them and watch them finish quests for you.

She's still the best hireling in the game because free spell points at will is really good. She's a Mysterious Bauble that you don't have to farm for. She's a Ring of Spell Storing that you can use every five minutes instead of just once per rest.

(she's also a great lever puller since you don't have to summon her in the beginning of the quest)
No one in the world ever gets what they want
    And that is beautiful
    Everybody dies frustrated and sad
    And that is beautiful

Have been for years. (Don't know when Starter Pack hit the market, but Wiki article is 4 years old this month.)

(I'd have to think it's older than that - that's about when I bought mine, and it was 75% off then. Packs usually don't go on deep discount when new. )

As mentioned above, you are so wrong.

I was in an Epic quest, and popped her at the entry. One player mocked me mercilessly about it, wouldn't let up. "Useless, a waste of everyone's time", etc. Then the party wiped - but she was still there. Called her, she grabbed everyone's stone, ran to shrine - everyone except that one player. Told him I didn't want to waste any more of his time. (I was in a mood, I guess. )

She then healed the two strongest characters who finished quest (she only has so many spell points).

Now that I think of it, one else ran back for that stone either. Huh.

Then maybe you're using them wrong.

Healer hires cannot be counted on to be in-combat healers - AI is just too random to be reliable without micromanagement (which is a pain in-combat), and, yes, they die too easily. You have to park them back behind you, and use them for after-combat only. In that role, even Thistledown is useful into Epics. (Only danger then is Fear Reapers and respawns.)

And if she does die (or runs out of juice too soon), dismiss her, and she's back in 5 minutes. Money.

Yep. she can pull a lever or stand on a rune as well as anyone else. Artficer + Hire + Pet + Elieri = solo Tomb of the Burning Heart easy.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I got the Tangleroot Gorge pack, the only low level pack on sale that I didn't have.

I think Keep on the Borderlands is a good pack. Mounts are fun, and the epic weapons and other items eg Blackfeather Boots are pretty good. More epic level 21 adventures are good for new 20s.

I might pick up the +5 to UMD skill tome. Not sure.

Not sold on the otto boxes or the sentient weapon xp pack. Y'all talked me into more quest packs.

The suggestion of Hireling Folder is intriguing, especially at last a large one. I could dump two scarecrows and my level 3 healer in there, free up 3 inventory slots plus have seven more contracts in there. But it's not on sale. None of the QoL stuff I mentioned is on sale, so will just hold the rest of my points.
