Default Complimentary or Competition? 2 new D&D games coming out

A friend just shared with me a link to Dark Alliance (https://www.darkalliance.com/). A D&D game featuring Drizzt and his friends set in Icewind Dale. A few month ago I heard that there will be Baulder's Gate 3 is being produced (https://baldursgate3.game/). What I'm wondering is will these 2 new D&D games increase interest in DDO or will they take away DDO players? Lets face it, DDO has old graphics and is in need of updating. While there are lots of people out there who play video games, those who really love D&D already come play DDO. Part of me is concerned that DDO will suffer, but then I'm hopeful that more players will try out these new games and this will lead them to DDO. What are your thoughts fellow DDO players?

That trailer for the Dark Alliance is one of the worst things I've ever seen, and I just watched an Adam Sandler movie.

If they don't have the amount of character customization as DDO then I'm not playing. There is a reason I play DDO and no other MMOs and it's because graphics are pretty irrelevant to me - I still think Elder Scrolls 3 graphics are just great.

Couldn't they at least come up with a new name? We had 2 dark alliance d&d games for PS2 games back in the early 2000's

Also, +1 to being possibly the worst trailer ever.

The original Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance games were PS2-era action RPGs similar to Gauntlet. Baldurs Gate 3 is from Larian Studios, who made the Divinity series, which should give you some idea what to expect from BG3. Neither is really comparable to a MMO like DDO.

If anything, the most direct competition for DDO is/was Cryptic's Neverwinter MMO. If that didn't kill off DDO, I don't see why the new Baldurs Gate games would; they appeal to different sorts of players.

Default Competetion (But DDO would win. I hope it never changes)

Competiton for sure. At least that's what all studious aim to survive. Right ?

About Neverwinter. (Not Neverwinter Nights for sure. That was a cool game!) I played Neverwinter game for a good amount of time aswell. Being much newer than DDO, the quests and stories are pretty ugly. Player made quests are gone too. Graphics and all, it was much better than older DDO ones; but it is mostly an empty Theme park compared to DDO.

Players get levels lghting fast then gear up. Then they start buying extremely expensive gems to slot their weapons. And new slots and gems keep popping up, turning older sest and anytihng useless. (No real game or virtuasocial relations but Itemisation P1ss fight...Dead game Jim...)

PVP was exremely toxic aswell. Raids all the same raids and as I added above. People doesnt even talk much if the other player isnt wearing flashing goldy pants and neon dancing weird toy weapons (sigh yeah)

Even one of the most blamed games for being p2w ; Archage had more friendlier community...all except trade runs (also pvp brought to you the same time) at active times were allways busted by credit card pirates lol...)

I can assure anyone who is curious about. Nothing like good DDO with its unique quests and story lines and wilderness areas.

I have played Neverwinter online since their mod3 (2014). I still check their new mods out on occasion. I can tell NWO is worse compare to DDO. They are all looks but their development quality is bad. Their developer got no idea what they are doing most of the time. Not that they lack of creativity but project that they implement does not last long and got scrap pretty easy. They never truly develop their idea and let it blossom in to something amazing.

Take Foundary for example. A system they introduce since the launch of the game where player could make their own quest for other player to play. Then they scrap it. Next they scrap their old profession aka crafting system (where tons of player spend money in) and replace with a new one. The recent one is they scrap all their classes, giving them overhaul which turn out to be a nerf to all classes because they could not handle the power creep they created. The most outrageous thing I have seen is that they could even scarp dungeon. A content given to us only to be taken away and never given back since their mod 6 in 2015.

So yeah.. Im not spending money in a game that scrap thing so easily and make all the money u invested gone with it. They are like the Terminator franchise. Ideas got scrap and re-do so many time that the is nothing left to believe in.

Wait, they still didn't put those dungeons back in? I stopped even dabbling in that game shortly after they removed them. That's just bad.

I have just watched the Dark Alliance trailer and by comparison it makes the cinematic production of Battlefield Earth look Oscar worthy.

The Baldur's Gate trailer looked interesting and I will me keep an eye on the game (I loved the previous versions of Baldur's Gate).

In my view, the fact that they are still making DnD games and that there is another (hopefully better) film planned can only be good for the DDO.

Graphics for me is least concern, really if an Infinity Engine BG3 was released recently I would play that instead of grinding exp here :P. Definitely looking forward to play BG3, altho I try to have lower expectations than usual.

That's just not possible. You can't out-bad an Adam Sandler movie, except MAYBE with a Will Ferrell movie.

The Baldur's Gate game could be interesting. I wasn't aware Mind Flayers worked like Aliens though.

Baldur's Gate are usually single player though, no?

I agree that Dark Alliance game looks pretty dubious. I suspect a lot more "action" than "RPG", even by modern game standards.

didn't even finish watching the trailer for dark alliance... couldn't help but think 'if the heroes look that ugly I'd rather play an orc.' As for Baldur's Gate, I will definitely buy it at some point, but as with many other games mostly for nostalgic reasons because I enjoyed the old games. New and Bigger rarely amounts to better though.

Baldur's Gate could have an effect on DDO's user base but it would likely be short term. Players splitting their time or focusing on Baldur's Gate until it finishes then returning to DDO.

Dark Alliance back in the PS2 era was a linear hack and slash from what I recall but it had it's fun little moments. It will probably have no impact on DDO's user base if the old games are anything to go by, play, finish and pick up with friends for a hack and slash time. The trailer was bad alright but at the end they show what appears to be a few seconds of a coop group in game and it looks fine. Between the bad cinematic trailer part and snipit at the end I got Vermintide vibes from it.

Both could end up boosting DDO if players like the two games and want more DnD.

I don't think they'll count as competition since DDO is it's own thing with it's own merits, but I play a number of other games regularly - most recently, mechwarrior 5 & disco elysium. Dark alliance doesn't appeal to me all that much, but I'm definitely going to be playing Baldur's Gate 3, in large part because I loved those older games & the new one is being made by Larian, whose work i've enjoyed since the original divine divinity back in the day.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was, now what's it is weird and scary to me.

Then I watched the trailer... Yeesh. As a fan vid that would've been cool. As the official trailer from a company, that's pretty sad.
