Several good recommendations here. The fvs paly split has several functions. First fvs basically has a bigger hit die than any other class options. The synergy with intim/fvs to hit/fvs damage/paly saves allow you to do some damage with your diety weapon, have a decent intim score, and great saves.
The arti splits are going to give you more hp and better defenses.
Both can add decent to stellar self healing over a fighter. Which is actually very nice on a tank, even with guild healers. You stated your guild runs difficult content so being able to swap a raid healer for dps, or be a back up healer will be helpful.
I currently prefer a 17/3 fvs paly split for me because I can tank or solo heal any raid worth running currently. Your mileage may vary. I do have a few epic pl that I have picked up along the way, and 4-5 heroic pl.
The good news is if you are sold on 20 fighter, roll it up. You can always tr later and be better for it Gluck.

Not when in this same subforum you have threads (with the word tank on it, no need to go past 1st page) to tell you what are valid tanking values, the ones you showed are more like for a dps than a tank, so i said you can get double ac and 100 more prr and mrr, cause was already considering no pl
psykopeta is finally baconpletionist because there isn't anything to delay it more - thelanis, where the gimps claim to be pros and noobs claim to be pros, no newbies allowed(unless they claim to be pros), we have enough drama w/o them. PS: I post only in the latest thread shown in main page, in the weird case u want something from me, feel free to send pm
Another reason not to dump strength is it adds to your save against trips. Super helpful when tanking dragons.
Hi there.
Starts something as; 14 Intelligence/15 Strength/14Charisma/14 Wisdom/14Constitution
Purple Dragon Knight (May go 32 Point Dragonborn or Aaasimar aswell) Strength domain Cleric/Radiant servant15 (&Death Pact)/Beacon of Hope Favored soul is another which is more passive + Stalward defender Fighter5. Grab Die Hard and Purple dragon knight enhancements too.
The Strength domain cleric is much more than a regular cleric; It is about staying up, alive and keeping friends alive while swinging your weapon and inviting more enemies on yourself. Silvanus vs Helm is up to you.
My apoligies if I brought it far out of the pure Fighter tank build.
***Just as a note***
This one is No spell based healing; no Intimidate focus Weird but fun tank. (Not the best tank not the best dps. Can solo and team nice. Requires 32 Point build. Can be Half Orc 18 Str, Human Higher Dex, Wis or Char, Dwarf 18 Cons- Throw your weight around)
A more Fighter focus one would be with Rogue and Barbarian Half Orc 18 Str/14 Cons/14 dex/8 wis/6 char (Char and Wis require attention vs several rare npc effects) .
Stalward defender T5 /Non raging Occult slayer You can swap to T5 between Stalward when bored/You can also add 23 Vistani. THF + All Four Shield Feats Including Shield deflection + Brutal throw. Can pick Die Hard from Frenzied tree (This is without Wizard, Artificer, Favored soul or Cleric)
2 Rogue/6-8 Barb/10-12 Fighter- Can go Light armor and Heavy Armor rest of the set not changed for evasion except stacking all dodge and reflex save bonuses including set bonus and insight bonus ones.
My humble pieces of eight.

Disclaimer: I'm basically retired from DDO and the last time I main-tanked, Thunderforged crafting was still endgame gear and Reaper mode was just a mad gleam in the Eye of Severlin. So I don't know where the current meta for endgame tanks is.
That said, the reason why you're being recommended some wacky-looking multiclass splits is due to the way various bonuses to AC and HPs stack together. You can have one of each type of bonus active; in the event you have more than one, only the highest bonus applies.
Hit Points:
- Competence: Tenacious Defense (fighter / paladin), Ursa's Heart (bear druid), Ultimate Enlightenment (warlock), Epic Defensive Fighting (req's melee feats for full bonus)
- Racial: Paragon Body (Artificer)
- Sacred: Protector Bond (Aasimar) [yes, the "racial" bonus to HPs comes from a class while the "sacred" bonus comes from a race - I try not to ask why]
- Insight: Strength of Vitality (Unyielding Sentinel)
I'm probably forgetting others, but you get the idea. Thus why Aasimar is favored for tanks; they get an unique +10% HP bonus as well as heal amp and Healing Hands. The downside is Protector Bond is expensive (16 APs), but...well, that's why you can run a zillion racial PLs now, isn't it?
It's the same deal with AC bonuses; e.g., the wizard or sorcerer splash on many tanks is for Improved Mage Armor which provides a +10% Exceptional bonus to AC. The only other Exceptional AC bonus IIRC is Beast Unleashed (bear druid).
And a word about defensive stances: you can only use one of them from Sacred Defender / Stalwart Defender / Nature's Protector. But the static bonuses from Stalwart Defender (e.g., Armor+Shield Mastery) will stack with those from the other two. So a paladin- or druid-based tank could splash fighter for those bonuses (or vice versa).
Finally, since you can only take one tier-5, one of the first things you need to decide if you multiclass is which tier-5 you want, which impacts your final class split.
So one example of such a heavily-multiclassed tank is Steel Maiden:
- Elf for Displacement Dragonmark
- Fighter 14 for Heavy Armor Champion (+12 PRR/MRR) and a bunch more feats, of course
- Paladin 5 for tier-5 Sacred D.'s Harbored by Light (+25 PRR/MRR) plus other perks (e.g. big boost to saves from Divine Grace)
- Wizard 1 for Imp Mage Armor (+10% AC)
It hasn't been updated yet for Sharn, but according to one poster PainStealer is still playing (and working on racial PLs), so perhaps it will be someday.
A dwarf variant would get Radiant Forcefield instead of Displacement and can have higher CON+HPs. You can even go with Throw Your Weight Around (TYWA) if you're willing to fully embrace the dwarven path. So a quick-n-dirty conversion on a 32-pt build with +3 Supreme would be STR 14 / DEX 10 / CON 20 (+level-ups) / INT 10 / WIS 8 / CHA 12, maybe? That way you can keep the THF feat chain (presuming you use dwarven axes), Dodge+Mobility, and Combat Expertise.
Something like cleric 14 (Protection Domain) / paladin 5 / wiz 1 would give up a lot of feats, obviously, but gain plenty of spells and Radiant Forcefield SLA. It also adds +16 to AC/PRR/MRR if I'm adding right, but since you're losing fighter heavy armor feats and Stalwart Defender bonuses, it's a net loss...probably? I'll let someone else crunch numbers nowadays.
