Default Adventures in Theorycrafting - Tempest Warpriests

Recently there have been a number of melee-focused builds based on exploiting Warpriest goodies with a heavy cleric or FvS splash (e.g., maddmatt70's Battleragers, EllisDee37's Kensei Warpriest); in particular, Ameliorating Strike, which is a free AoE heal every time you use Smite Foe (15 sec. cooldown). This thread is my attempt at hopping on that bandwagon, using ranger instead.

Rgr has several advantages, but the key one here is higher offhand proc chance from Tempest; Ameliorating Strike procs on offhands and doublestrikes, so a TWF Warpriest could get up to 3 procs per Smite.

    Fresh Off the Korthos Boat (28-pt F2P build) - Ranger 12 / Cleric 7

Leveling order: I started rogue to max out skill pts and open UMD & trap skills right off the bat; then did rgr 1-3 to get Tempest core enh for the first +10% offhand proc (50% until rgr 6); then cleric 1-4 to get Ameliorating Strike; then rgr 4-12 before finishing with cleric 5-7. Another option would be rog 1, rgr 1, cleric 1-7, rgr 2-12; this gets you AS by lvl 6 and lvl 4 spells by lvl 9, but backloads all of your rgr feats & enhs. In which case, I would use 2H weapons for the first several levels before switching to TWF in the teen lvls.

Feats: the must-haves are the Power Atk/Cleave/GC/Imp Crit/Overwhelming Crit chain and PTWF. Khopeshes aren't must-haves, but they're still your best overall choice for TWF while heroic leveling (apart from maybe Deathnips); in epics you can respec for different weapons depending on what you pull or grind out. I used the remaining feats to round out her ranged DPS (PBS & IC:Ranged) and healing (Emp Heal+Quicken, mostly for Rejuv Cocoon).

Enhancements: the must-haves are 21 APs into Tempest for lvl 12 core enh (full 100% offhand procs) and 22 APs into Warpriest for Ameliorating Strike. That leaves 37 APs to spread around; you can see I went for Evasive Dance in Tempest (Reflex saves are a bit low, so having Imp Evasion is nice), some human enhs (+20% heal amp, action boosts, +2d6 ranged SAs), and a few odds & ends. I could've squeezed in Radiant bursts, but with only 7 cleric lvls and 1 metamagic, it wouldn't be very powerful; still, it is an option, esp. if you're looking for something to spend your TUs on. Another option would be Divine Vitality from Divine Disciple; make the other casters in your party happy.

Splashing: the rogue splash opens up UMD and trap skills; I also could move some APs into first-tier enhs if I wanted (e.g., +1d6 SA from Assassin). Other options include: ftr (Haste Boost + Extra Action Boost), barb (+3 Power Atk, +10% run speed, up to 4 uses of Rage), or pally (switch to LG and 12/6/2 split for Divine Grace).

    Whirling Warpriest of Vengeance

This build takes a somewhat different bent. While it's still a TWF+Manyshot build, it takes FvS instead of cleric and invests more heavily into Warpriest and Angel of Vengeance. The ideas being:
    • Heavier investment in WP: wields scimitars to take advantage of Righteous / Wrathful Weapons (Undying Court); also takes Divine Vessel for the free AoE dmg proc.
    • Adds Scourge & Just Reward, which I've been told can proc when Divine Vessel fires. I'll use the cheap light spells (Nimbus / Searing Light) to help "charge up" Scourge; Divine Punishment will be saved for rednames. Just Reward should help with the lower SPs from MCing (knock on wood).
    • Take advantage of guard effects from AoV (Shield of Condemnation, Animus) and WP (Burden of Sin, Light Guard). The light debuffs from SoC makes targets more vulnerable to Light Guard, Divine Vessel, and Wrathful Weapons; while Animus boosts Scourge, increasing the power of my various light-based abilities.

    So, onto the build:

Normally I would start rgr to max out skill pts, but that messes up my feat progression. This is not a centered build; monk splash is for feats, Evasion, and 1 AP into Shinto (+5% heal amp +10 Pos Spellpower). As such, I'd probably use lt armor for a bit of PRR rather than robes. Unfortunately this means missing out on everything centered monks get; I've actually got an idea for drow monk 6 / FvS 12 / rgr or pal 2 build that's similar in concept but uses short swords to stay centered...but that's for another day.

To be honest, I'm not convinced Wrathful weapons + Divine Vessel adds enough DPS to be worth the heavy investment; but it's a good excuse to experiment. Also, in PUGs / raids, I'd probably focus on more of a support role; e.g., shifting APs away from guard effects to Enflame and/or better healing.

the rogue splash doesn't really offer much, as there's no chance to pick up trapping skills for a korthos build with so many cleric levels and a starting int of 12. so basically all it offers is UMD...

much better IMO is the fighter splash, granting a much needed feat.

if I were to build a newbie friendly build I would switch the race to halfling, drop PBS, and pick up the dragonmarks instead. (the feat lost from changing races is gained with the fighter level)

this would give the new player some quality self healing options to work with when they get in over their heads, or when they're out of combat (leeches for neg levels for example).

cleric already opens up the heal skill and you've already slotted quicken and empowered healing, might as well put them all to good use.

    -- edit

as a side bonus, halfling would also bring better saves, AC, and the possibility for a good dose of SA damage

If you look closely, you'll see I have 20 ranks of Search and 18 ranks of DD; that's plus human Skill Boost are more than sufficient for most traps while leveling and good enough for epics with some investment in gear & buffs.

Actually, I started running out of good ideas for feats after a while; once the melee feats & Emp Heal are outta the way, it's mostly just DPS tweaks and the like. Would've taken a DM if I had more APs to spare. The real advantage to fighter splash is extra action boost, since this build has four boosts (Haste, Enflame, Dmg, Skill); but ofc then you have to free the APs to invest in Kensei from somewhere...

I went human for the heal amp, extra feat & skill pts, etc.; but the build can be adapted to any race. Feel free to put your own spin on it.

Updated second post with a FvS-based build which goes for AoV and heavier WP investment to get some light-based DPS in there, too.

    Just noticed your thread.

I'm leveling something similar to your FVS, though I'm not sold yet on final class structure and progression - but essentially the scimitar warpriest. I've got a character who's the right race and split (low teens) and about to LR to tweak things up w/ the freebie so been mucking around on my own theoryspace google doc folder.

I'm still unsure what to do with the other levels (ranger 6 / fvs 12 core) so looking at options, but AP is more limiting than the class levels (and if it leans that way, monk with the 2 feats and evasion will likely win out - though I'd like to see Fighter).

    Warpriest: 32-36 ish AP
AA: 7-8 points (conjure arrows, force arrows, morphic)
Tempest: 13 for T2 whirling blades and sprint boost
    AoV: 20 some (archon, etc.)

That pretty much fills me out. I'd like to fit in Kensai: 12 ish for Haste boost + extra action boosts

... but something has to give.

Why not go Elf. Get dex to damage with scimitars for better evasion.

    Tempest buffs for 2WF

Cleric favored weapon - elf (elves make good weapons).

    Elf Valenar training.

Beyond the whole STRvsDEX thing ... Tempest gives DEX to hit and damage ... half elves have more CON ... half-elves can take the undying court ...

What do you think elves do better?

When Divine Might boosts DEX instead of STR, I'll consider doing a DEX-based divine.

I realized once I had invested that much into FvS PrEs, I didn't have a lot of APs left to spread between racial, Tempest, AA, DWS, and Shintao. Heck, I don't even know where to pull 6 APs for Tempest Haste Boost.

I might also consider rearranging my lvls a bit so I get AS by lvl 7 or 8, rather than backloading it until lvl 12.

I was actually somewhat surprised about how much melee DPS I lost when I dropped the Righteous/Wrathful line on my toon Until I got better weapons again. (Drow, levels 22-23. Celestia from the raider box; Righteous supposedly breaks DR breaking?)

Well, on my cleric/ranger I keep enough points in Radiant Servant to have regenerating turns (most of which get used for Cleansing and Purge in epics) so I have Pacifism.

In PUG/raid boss fights, Power Attack off (if any) and Pacifism on, only get in melee range to Smite, and ... does Pacifism actually come with builtin threat reduction? I've had mobs seemingly just avoid me when I do that.

Or, AS doesn't count for threat the way healing spells do?

I realize that but the charisma isn't great & not having dex doesn't help reflex saves much. My Elven Cleric/Fighter is str based for sure & I generally agree with you but with 12 Ranger levels or 2 monk I'd want some decent evasion (I see the 2 different builds now so not sure where exactly to weigh pros/cons).

    Divine might w/ 14 charisma & item +8 = 22

    12/2 = 6 str bonus -> +3 to hit & dam.

Doesn't sound like a deal breaker for possible alternatives. Reflex saves might be worth it to some people.

    Elf: start w/ dex 18 (same build pts as str 16) + 5 levels = 23 vs 17, a difference of +3 reflex.

[*]Heavier investment in WP: wields scimitars to take advantage of Righteous / Wrathful Weapons (Undying Court); also takes Divine Vessel for the free AoE dmg proc.[*]Adds Scourge & Just Reward, which I've been told can proc when Divine Vessel fires. I'll use the cheap light spells (Nimbus / Searing Light) to help "charge up" Scourge; Divine Punishment will be saved for rednames. Just Reward should help with the lower SPs from MCing (knock on wood).[*]Take advantage of guard effects from AoV (Shield of Condemnation, Animus) and WP (Burden of Sin, Light Guard). The light debuffs from SoC makes targets more vulnerable to Light Guard, Divine Vessel, and Wrathful Weapons; while Animus boosts Scourge, increasing the power of my various light-based abilities.

Could you expound a bit on what the tradeoffs are between the two you've posted? What does one give up compared to the other? To be honest, I think the second is much weaker, with less utility. But I am enthralled by your ranger approach, please give me more...

I've noticed you aren't taking the AoV enhancement Articles of faith, which makes your deity weapons count as spellcasting implement weapons.
with the full warpriest deity weapon chain you're getting +5 enhancement to them, so a fairly easy +10 enhancement total, for +30 spell power.

you might want to consider adding it to your build

I think you're being stingy on charisma there

    12 base +4 tome +10 item +3 ins +1 exc +2 ship +2 yugo = 34 (+12) = +6 to hit and damage.

Now this is pretty much with max end game gear, so I might agree with you for a first time player the extra reflex might well be worth it, but while the first build is new players a 28 point new player friendly build the second isn't, but tbh I'd go str over dex in either case because boosting str is so much easier.
But then again it's up to the player, personally I always see builds created by other people as a guideline to create something suited to you, not as something you copy entirely.

Caveat: like the thread titles says, this is all just theorycrafting, I haven't made any of these builds yet.

That said, in the long run I expect the first build to have better melee DPS: +10% offhand procs and khopeshes instead of scimitars (despite righteous/wrathful weapons) should put its DPS 8-10% ahead, I'm guessing. [Presuming weapons with identical bonuses, e.g., drow khopesh vs drow scimitar. It gets more complicated if you're trying to compare named weapons, e.g., eCannith water khopesh vs eKronzek.] It also has full ranks of UMD, decent trap skills, and Improved Prec Shot. Plus it's easier to change your melee options: if you decide to dual-wield Nightmares or Balizardes or Celestias or whatever someday, just do a bit of feat-swapping. Whereas if the second build is wielding anything but scimitars, it loses the benefits of Righteous+Wrathful weapons.

OTOH, the second build will have much better healing (Heal+MCLW+more SPs); and I'm hoping the combination of guard effects, light spells, and Divine Vessel help make up for the lost melee DPS. To be honest, though, I was just looking for an excuse to take T5 Warpriest and this seemed like the most interesting idea I could come up with. If I decide scimitars are a lost cause, I can drop Righteous+Wrathful weapons and switch to something better.

I had it in my first draft, then dropped it for, errr, something else. Does it stack with Implement items, or merely supplant them?
