This game seriously needs a name purge

It is absurd how many names are taken. The only other game I have seen with this issue is Path of Exile, and thats because the names are saved between all leagues, and people make nonstop new characters since the start of the game in 2013. It's to the point in that game where people just name themselves things like "FrostyTotes" or "FirePerson" because literally every name is taken. That's how this game is. I just don't understand how so many names are taken in a game that is this low pop.

If someone hasn't been on their character in 5+ years then the name should be freed up.




It's been an hour and a half and I have tried every variation of every decent sounding names. Many of which are so insanely obscure, some even made up by me. All taken. This is actually enough to make me not even continue with this game... I'm not going to play a Dungeons and Dragons game where I'm not even allowed a decent sounding name for my character.

That isn't true, as there are other MMOs that will free up an inactive name. Never say never.

What really blows my mind is this game has the perfect way to allow for anyone to have the names they want.... SURNAMES! WHY don't surnames count as part of your characters name? That would fix everything!

Every time? Never.

They won't be able to purge enough names fast enough to make that true. And since I've had friends from 2008 and earlier return recently - I think it's a good call to not purge names. If you can't summon the creativity to find a suitable name, regardless of the naming restrictions we've all been under since day one, I haven't the sympathy because options exist.

Disagree? That's cool. It still doesn't negate my point whatsoever.

It has nothing to do with lack of creativity. It has everything to do with being forced to pick a name you're unhappy with. Sure you can just mash letters together and come up with all kinds of names. Names that sound terrible. Names that don't sound like they fit your character. Names that you don't want. If your friends haven't played since 2008 then they clearly didn't care about the game for 11 years. There's no reason they should be able to horde good character names from people who actually care to play the game.

I mean Purge is only going to do you any good if the name you want to use is inactive. If you want to use a name somebody else's actively using then you're still out of luck. I guess you'll have to go to thesaurus.com if someone is actively using the name you want.

Yea... Because literally every one that doesn't sound god awful is taken by people that don't even play anymore. That is the point of this thread which you seem to not quite understand. And no, posting a website used to find synonyms for words does not help with making a real RP name.

I can't tell if you people are trolling or seriously name your characters random mashups of words like PoE players. Because a thesaurus does absolutely nothing with names. It's like if we were looking for a recipe for pancakes, so you link us an ebook for learning spanish.

short answer, buy a +10 imagination potion and create something original, you can!

and no, you got 0 rights over someone who took the name 1st and stopped playing 5 or 20 years ago, if other games are willing to give under players pression it's their fault, not something to be proud of

prefixes, suffixes, modifying adjectives....like colors. titles. unusual spellings. foreign words...

I was never able to get "Talon" but I eventually found a unique spelling that I like even better and have used on other games since.

When I'm feeling alt-y, I usually get the first name I drop in. (No I don't use acronyms on my chars like my forum handle is) Sometimes I do bump heads on a name I thought was oddball enough to be okay, but that just reminds me that I'm in the right house with a bunch of other nerdy geeky oddballs.

ANY name you try taking from any printed source will, of course, already have been trampled. Every conceivable variation of "Inigo" and "x/\xDrizzle'itx/\x" are long since locked up. Plus, if you read the fine print, copying names from copyrighted material is actually a naming violation, tho it isn't really enforced unless someone reports it.

As for other games that rip peoples' names away from them, there are also games that delete your character if you don't play them for a few months. So where does the line get drawn once ya start down that slope?
