How to make WASD and up, down, left, right work like thumbsticks

i've now spent too much time searching online for key mapping answers; hopefully, this hasn't been asked, but...why can't i move the camera up and down when in selection cursor mode. i'm attempting to key map so that my WASD and up, down, left, and right keys function exactly like console thumbsticks. everything works but moving the camera up and down when the cursor is visible; currently i have to toggle 'T' into reticle mode to make those keys move the camera up and down, or i have to use the mouse. i'm playing on a Macbook pro, so i have no number pad and few other options. is there any way to do this? if not, does anyone know why? i would love to see the list of Gingerspyce's key mapping changes.
