I have been using the high res textures in DDO since i began playing on the same computer from the beginning with lacklustre results because of frame rate drops and stuttering. It ran better with the lower settings such as no shadows, antialiasing and just about everything else turned off or down. Tried every config i could think of. I even tried to run it with the lowest texture detail setting and it was still not 100% smooth running. I originally played on Linux and switched to win10 with little improvement and still not acceptable.
I have an ATI 6770 1 GB card and 4 GB of ram and a half fast processor and a 40" samsung tv running in gaming mode. Hardware is not an issue i run other games on highest settings from this era no problem.
So i opted for a balanced settings approach and once in a dungeon instance it played not bad some maps better than others but still not the way i wanted. I wanted to play with the high res textures ultra high detail or why bother using them right?
The other day i decided to reinstall DDO and give the default textures a try. So i uninstalled the game and set about reinstalling. When it started i awaited the option to choose to install the high res textures and it just went straight into downloading and installing the game. So i tried to search out an answer and found nothing.
The answer was in the Documents folder. Dungeons and Dragons Online folder. I looked in the folder and found the file UserPreferences.ini opened it and found the line: UseHighResolutionGameData=true. So i deleted the DDO folder completely and started the install again and got the option to select high res textures and chose no this time.
Edit: ***If you would like to keep all your previous install settings then dont delete the DDO folder instead edit this line UseHighResolutionGameData=true to UseHighResolutionGameData=false. instead***
Save the file after editing it and start the installation which will automatically start installing the low res textures without prompting you to choose.
I started the game logged in and changed all the graphics settings to the highest settings possible (Everything except antialiasing 4x and i dont like light bloom so its off).
It runs smooth as silk now everywhere in the game and looks phenomenal for a game of this era. I have been playing more consistently and enjoying the game more than ever!
I posted this in the hope that it might help someone else, who cant afford a newer computer, to enjoy the game a hell of a lot better too
